MOTOR CITY MATCHUP: Two of the American League’s last
five Cy Young Award winners, Max Scherzer (DET, 2013) and Zack
Greinke (KC, 2009), will square off as the Dodgers and Tigers
conclude their two-game series at Comerica Park. Today marks the
finale of the Dodgers’ six-game road trip (3-2) and following this
afternoon’s game, the club will return to Los Angeles for its final
series before the All-Star break, a four-game set against the Padres.
Los Angeles has the National League’s best road record at
29-18 (.617) and is unbeaten in its last seven road series (6-
0-1), last losing a series on the road at Arizona, May 16-18.
The Dodgers need a win today to avoid being swept for the
first time in their 30th series of the season.
Los Angeles has gone 8-7 in Interleague Play this season.
Following today’s game the Dodgers have only four games
remaining against American League opponents, the Freeway
Series against the Angels, Aug. 4-7.
SIMPLY OFFENSIVE: The Dodgers have been downright
offensive this road trip, averaging 6.4 runs per game (32 R/5 G) with
a .301 team batting average (55-for-183), a .371 on-base percentage
and a .415 slugging percentage. The team has combined to hit .440
(22-for-50) with runners in scoring position and has posted four five-
run innings through the first five games of its road trip.
Matt Kemp has seven hits in his last two games and has
reached base safely in all four of his games this road trip,
combining to post a .438 batting average (7-for-16) with a
.500 on-base percentage.
Juan Uribe had two hits last night, including a two-run
homer, and has hit safely in all five games this trip, batting
.435 (10-for-23) with a double, a home run and five RBI.
Dee Gordon is batting .423 (22-for-52) with three doubles,
a triple and two RBI in his last 13 games since June 25,
including a .368 mark (7-for-19) with a .400 on-base
percentage in five games on the club’s current road trip.
THE STOPPER: Zack Greinke will make his third consecutive start
following a Dodger loss, going 2-0 and allowing only three runs (two
earned runs) in 15.0 innings (1.20 ERA) in his previous two starts,
and has been helping Los Angeles bounce back after losses since
joining the club last year. Since 2013, Greinke has made 20 starts
following a Dodger loss and has posted a 14-2 record with 1.92 ERA
(28 ER/131.0 IP), while the team has gone 17-3 in those games.
Today will mark Greinke’s final start before the All-Star
break. With a victory, he would become the 19th Los
Angeles Dodger to post 12 or more wins before the All-Star
break and the first to do so since 1991, when Ramon
Martinez was 12-3.
Greinke is tied for the National League wins lead (11-4) and
also ranks among the league leaders in ERA (2.66, 7th) and
strikeouts (119, 5th).
Greinke has gone 13-6 with a 2.74 ERA (45 ER/148.0 IP) in
27 games (24 starts) in his career against Detroit, including
an 8-4 mark with a 2.62 ERA (22 ER/75.2 IP) in 15 games
(13 starts) at Comerica Park. He fired complete games in
back-to-back outings against the Tigers in 2009 as a member
of the Royals, allowing only an unearned run on three hits
on April 24 and one run on six hits on May 26 in identical 6-
1 Kansas City wins at Kauffman Stadium.
Los Angeles starters have combined to post a Major League-
leading 3.13 ERA (194 ER/558.1 IP), while overall the club
ranks among the NL leaders in ERA (3.35, 5th) and
strikeouts (776, 1st).
SWINGING FOR THE FENCES: Dodger outfielder Yasiel Puig
will compete in the 2014 Gillette Home Run Derby on Monday, July
14. The announcement was made last night on ESPN’s
“SportsCenter” by National League Derby captain Troy Tulowitzki.
Puig, who has 12 home runs on the season, will compete in his first
career Derby after hitting 19 home runs in his first big league season
in 2013. His 31 homers in his first two seasons are currently the
fourth-most by a Cuban-born player in MLB history behind Cespedes
(49), Jose Canseco (38) and Alexei Ramirez (36). Puig will become
the fifth player (seventh appearance) in Dodger history to take part in
the Derby, joining Mike Piazza (1993-94), Raul Mondesi (1995),
Hee-Seop Choi (2005) and Matt Kemp (2011-12).
The Dodgers will have four representatives on the NL All-
Star team: second baseman Dee Gordon, right-handed
pitcher Zack Greinke, left-handed pitcher Clayton
Kershaw and outfielder Yasiel Puig. Puig was a fan-elected
starter, Gordon and Kershaw were selected to the team as a
result of player balloting, while Greinke was chosen by NL
manager Mike Matheny. Los Angeles’ four All-Stars are its
most since 2010, when the club also had four players
selected to the Midsummer Classic (Ethier, Broxton, Furcal
and Kuo). The four All-Stars tie for the most among NL
clubs along with the Brewers, Cardinals and Reds.
IN THE CLUTCH: Since June 1, the Dodgers have batted .325 (96-
for-295) with runners in scoring position and now lead the National
League, and rank second in the Majors, with a .280 mark with RISP:
2014 MLB Leaders w/ RISP
1. Detroit Tigers .282
2. Los Angeles Dodgers .280
3. Colorado Rockies .275
The Dodgers have not led the Majors in batting average with
RISP since 1974, but have topped the NL twice in that
period: 1988 (.263) and 2006 (.286). Source: Stats, LLC.
Los Angeles has four qualifiers ranked in the NL’s top 25 in
batting average with RISP, including Dee Gordon (.373, 28-
for-75, 2nd
NL), Yasiel Puig (.343, 35-for-102, 8th NL),
Hanley Ramirez (.301, 25-for-83, 23rd
NL) and Juan Uribe
(.302, 16-for-54, T-24th NL).
WORKING BACK: Carl Crawford went 2-for-2 with a triple and a
run scored and played six innings in the field last night in a rehab
game for Triple-A Albuquerque against El Paso. Crawford has gone
5-for-11 (.455) with two triples, a stolen base and an RBI in four
rehab games for the Isotopes and is expected to return to Los Angeles
today for evaluation as he works his way back from a left ankle
sprain, suffered on May 27.
