International Principals Visit Cromer Campus

A delegation of Dutch Principals was hosted at Cromer last week to observe our Campus’ implementaion of “Visible

Learning”. The principals commented on the overwhelming postive energy within the school from both teachers and

students and were impressed with our implementation of learning goals and success criteria occuring in the classrooms

at Cromer Campus. Visible learning is a research proven approach developed by Professor John Hattie, who appeared in

the recent ABC television series “Revolution High School”. The delegation will be taking back to the Netherlands the highly

successful approach used at Cromer Campus which centres around “collective teacher efficacy”. This is where teachers

across the school collaborate and work together implemeting consistent and visible teaching and learning practices with

a shared belief that they are making a difference. This great work is occuring at our school right now and it was our

pleasure to share and connect with this international delegation.

Report

The table to the right shows the courses

offered to our students. For many, university

study is now underway, while a small few

have decided to opt for a 6-12 month

deferral. A number of students have been

successful in attaining apprenticeships in

carpentry, hospitality, mechanics and

plumbing, while some have already

commenced full-time work. One of our

graduates will be heading overseas for Camp

USA to enjoy the American summer. We

wish all of our 2016 graduates the best with

their future studies and work commitments.

On Thursday 16th February, Kaitlyn Smith

(Year 12, 2016) came into school to meet

with Year 12. Kaitlyn shared her experiences

of Year 12 and provided advice on how

students can work consistently to achieve

their goals. Her study advice included

working in the right environment (a place

free from distraction) and using HSC

Syllabus dot points to organise a set of

“super-notes.” Kaitlyn will begin a B

Medical Sciences at Macquarie University in

July.

Also on February 16th, Year 11 Parents and

Students joined the staff at Cromer Campus for an information evening. Thank you to Ben Dolahenty, Brendan Foster,

Emma Gallo, Kate Gallo and Kacie Turner who participated in our various Q&A sessions and provided practical advice to

survive the shift to Year 11. Each of these students received excellent feedback from teachers, parents and students.

Finally, four of our Year 12 students had the chance to sit in on a studio audience

at Fox Studios. Each of these students had displayed an interest in performance

and production. Seeing a live show opened their eyes to the teamwork and micro-

management required to put together a smooth TV production. "This Time Next

Year," hosted by Karl Stefanovic, is expected to appear on Channel 9 later in the

year.

We would like to expose our students to a range of industries. If you know of any

experts who would be willing to share their experiences, please let me know.

News from Integrated Studies Term 1 2017

We have had a great start to the New Year with all our delightful Year 7 students soon settling in to the new regimes

and expectations of high school. The students are encouraged to participate in all the school activities provided and

to work towards increasing their independence throughout their high school years. Our students Jack, Christina and

Kayla had a wonderful time at camp.

Many of the Integrated Studies students also demonstrated their strong swimming skills as they participated whole-heartedly in the Swimming Carnival and contributed to the school spirit and team scores by entering as many races as they could. Many of our students are also registered with Special Olympics in swimming, so their times can be used for those events as well.

The Work Experience Program has started up again and we are very lucky to be able to run an enclave work experience

program at the company Fighting Chance. We have three students from Mrs Francis’ class, Liam, Sophia and Priscilla,

who attend this program in their final year of school so they are accustomed to the world of work when they leave

school. We also have many students form Mrs Sullivan’s class who have started Work Experience in open employment

in the community. As they have all started in new work placements, their photos will appear in the next newsletter.

Students in Mrs Golding’s Visual Arts classes have jumped straight into demonstrating their visual arts skills by

submitting an entry into the 17th Toyota Dream Car competition. This annual competition encourages students to

imagine the future and design a vehicle that takes into account environmental, economic and social needs. The key

focus is sustainability and so many students were thinking about alternate power sources and how their vehicle could

assist with keeping the environment safe and clean. Some of the completed entries below showcase the very many

talented and imaginative artists amongst the Integrated Studies students.

The students in Mrs Francis’ class, Year 10-11-12F, have been putting their Lifeskills lessons into practice. They are slowly developing a kitchen corner in their classroom, which is already equipped with a lovely new microwave, thanks to the wonderful generosity of Noah’s parents, Mr and Mrs Frame. We really cannot thank you enough for your generosity as having the microwave in the classroom supports the development of the students’ independence in using this appliance in a safe and productive manner. We also have a very, very old, bar fridge, thanks to Mrs Francis, and have acquired an electric kettle - it is a work in progress. I’m sure you will see from the photos that the students are very capable in these skills, so please encourage them to help you at home with these basic tasks so their confidence and ability strengthens.

Year 7 Camp – Morisset

Over the days 6-8th February, all of Year 7 left their comfort zone (and air

conditioning) and went on Year 7 Camp. The three days were filled with

laughs, fun, adventure and many students challenged themselves and

accomplished things they thought they would never do.

We were blessed with no rain, apart from one morning before breakfast, hot

temperatures, high humidity and plenty of excitement. Some of the

activities the students (and teachers) took part in were High Ropes Course,

Mud World, Canoeing, Team Challenge, Sailing, Snorkelling, Multi-Climb and

the always fun Dual Flying Fox. At night students took part in a Challenge

Night and on the second night, it was Night-Time Commando, which

involved the teachers taking hostages in the bush, and Year 7 students in

small teams trying to rescue them. I don’t know who had more fun on this

activity, the teachers or the students, it was defiantly a highlight for me.

The food for the students was your typical camp food - everyone enjoyed it and ate a whole lot of it. You know that the

students are having a great time when you head into the Dining Hall and it is full of students talking, laughing and

getting to know each other.

Page 13: Lore ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit · Visible learning is a research proven approach developed by Professor John Hattie, who appeared in the recent A television

CROMER COURIER

From dawn to well after lights out, the students were

highly engaged and entertained. Even with a bit of

‘down-time’ before and after dinner, just when you

thought that there was no way they could keep

running around, they just kept running and playing

and having a great time.

A big thank you to the 20 or so Year 10 Peer Support Leaders who came on camp to support our lovely new Year 7’s. They

went out of their way to ensure that the Year 7’s were all ok, helped out with home sickness, encouraged to challenge

themselves, always happy to help with equipment and provided another avenue for students to go to for help.

To the wonderful staff who came from Comer, Mr Moran, Ms Francis, Ms Black and Mr Delrennie, camps like this would

never run without the support of teachers like you. They took time out of their own lives, away from their own families

to ensure that camp was a tremendous experience for all involved.

Finally I would like to thank all the Year 7 students who attended the

camp. What an amazing camp, so much fun, so many highlights, so

much laughter and enjoyment. I hope you all know the students in

your year a little better, and I now know you guys a little better as

well.

Cromer’s swimming carnival was held at the Warringah Aquatic Centre on 17th February, with solid

participation by our students. Congratulations to all swimmers and staff on a very successful and

enjoyable carnival.

Special congratulations goes to our record breaker, Sophie McGovern, who broke her own record

from 2016 in the 50m Butterfly 17+ Girls, with a time of 33.72 (S. McGovern 34.00 (2016)). This is very

impressive, Sophie!

reaping the benefits at sport. This certificate is mandatory, ensuring that students have adequate

swimming ability, understand how to select safe swimming areas and can actively perform a rescue

using a surf craft. All students passed with flying colours!

Cromer Students’ Amazing Achievements

George Kanongataa and Langi Gleeson- RUGBY UNION: George attended the Sydney North-East

Rugby Union Open trials and was selected in the training squad. From here, the final team will be

selected. Good Luck George!

Tim Gavidi – RUGBY UNION: Tim attended the Sydney North-East Rugby Union Open trials, however due

to his age, he selected for the U16 team instead. Great effort Tim!

Knockout Sport

Boys Open Basketball

The Boys Open Basketball team played a nail biting

game against Hunter Hill HS in round 2 of the Sydney

North Schools, NSWCHSSSA knockout. According to

Mr Hanna (Coach), they played an extremely good

game, but went down by three points in the end,

finishing the game at 37-34. Well done boys!

Boys Open Tennis

The Boys Open Tennis came up against a strong

Pittwater High team in the first Round of the Stan Jones Trophy, tennis knockout. At very late notice,

Dejan and Aidan filled in for two absent students.

Our boys played with true conviction and displayed great spirit throughout their matches, considering

the calibre of players they were up against. We were defeated in all matches. We would like to convey

our best wishes to Pittwater in their next round of matches. Thanks Mr van der Wallen for organising

and coaching the team!

Congratulation to the open boys’ team who had

a very close game against Epping Boys High

School in round 2 of the Sydney North, NSWCHSSA

defeated 6 – 4, so will not progress in this

competition. The boys played well, demonstrating

good skills and respect at all times, with Decan

organising many of the plays.

Thanks Mrs Marsters for coaching the team and

Tua Marsters for refereeing the game. Great

team work boys!
