this infection. This is highly contagious and you will need to see a doctor if your child shows any symptoms.

Grey & Gold Cards

The cut-off date for grey and gold cards to be handed in to the school office for the next whole school assembly is 9am Wednesday, 22 May 2019 (Week 4).

Stewart House Donation Drive 2019 Envelopes for the Stewart House Donation Drive were sent home last week. Please return the envelope with your $2.00 donation before Friday, 17 May to be in the draw for a $4000 holiday to a destination of your choice.

Student Led Conferences As part of our assessing and reporting procedures, student led conferences (student / parent / teachers) will be held in Weeks 2-4 Term 2.

The purpose of student led conferences is for parents / carers, students and teachers to collaboratively discuss each student’s learning goals.

Students have identified these in their classes with teachers and are now inviting you to be part of the process.

Teachers will not be talking about your child’s individual progress in literacy and numeracy and other KLA’s, this will be done through half yearly reports and interviews that may follow if needed.

However, if you have any concerns or questions about your child’s progress or behaviour you are welcome at any time to contact the school and organise an appointment time with your teacher.

Teachers will also contact you if they have anything they need to share with you at any time throughout the year.

This conference also allows for your child to lead the process. Each class has allocated time for the process and conferences will be 10 minutes duration.

We look forward to your participation as we work together to enhance the educational experiences of your child.

Mrs Mackay (Assistant Principal)

STAGE 1 NEWS A warm welcome back to school and Term 2. This term Stage 1 students will be working hard both in the classroom and out.

Last Thursday morning our Gymnastics program commenced. The students were very excited to get on the gym equipment and eager to give each station a go! A wonderful opportunity for each child to develop and master skills in a supportive environment. Due to this

program students are not required to bring their hats to Monday morning assembly for a PE lesson this term.

Creative Arts Groups (class rotations within Stage 1) will continue on a fortnightly basis and we will be continuing our work with Music, Dance, Drama and Art. In Geography we will be exploring the topic People and Places. In English we are moving onto Imaginative Writing. During Maths lessons we will be learning about whole number, the 4 operations, mass, fractions and decimals, position, time, data and volume.

Home Learning The Stage 1 Home Learning reference card has been revised. A new cardboard sheet has been sent home for use this term. Included is a speaking and listening activity designed to improve the confidence of students in presenting a short speech in front of an audience. Full details and topics have been sent home with each student. A great way to help your child at home is to read with them every day and practice any of the other activities as desired. Please record the activities that have been completed each week and return it to the class teacher when complete for a sticker (first side) or Maryland Merit (double sided).

A friendly reminder that the Mother’s Day Stall is this Friday morning 10 May 2019 from 9am until 11am in the school hall. Gifts will be priced from $1 to $7 and please do not forget to send the students along with an environmentally friendly shopping bag and some money. To streamline the activity, placing their money in an envelope / purse or wallet with their name labelled should simplify the process. Your assistance in this regard is really appreciated.

Later in the day, Class 1/2SC will host the Friday assembly for K-2. As well as hosting, they have something to share with us. If you are free from 2pm we would love to see you in the audience.

Library Day Changes This term library days have changed for most Stage 1 classes and are as follows;- Class 1/2DG – Friday, Class 1/2PT – Wednesday; Class 1/2SC – Monday; Class 1/2SG – Wednesday and 1/2TC- Wednesday.

Knights Gala Day On the 2nd of May, Knights Rugby League Gala Day was an excellent opportunity for Maryland’s senior students. In Term 1, Mr Blyth taught us to run, tackle and pass the ball. The newcomers to the team this year were, William B and Jesse B. Noa A, Lincoln S, Kaicey M, Brodie B and Ben B have all been representatives for MPS since Year 3.

We played against Kurri Kurri, New Lambton PS, Scone and Rutherford. Our first game was against Kurri Kurri and we tied with them, 2-2. Our right wing, Jesse B scored our 2 tries. Our second game against New Lambton was unsuccessful with a score of 3-1, but we scored the first try thanks to our right centre, Hunter S. Our 3rd game against Scone was rough with a losing score of 5-0. And our last game was against Rutherford which was also a loss 5-0.

Our captain was Lincoln S and vice-captain was Noa A and our coach was Mr Blyth.

Noa A and Lincoln S

Impetigo page 1 of 2

What is impetigo?

Impetigo is a bacterial skin infection caused by Streptococcus and Staphylococcus bacteria. It is

commonly known as ‘school sores’ because a majority of cases are in school-aged children. However, it can also affect infants, adults and adolescents. Uncomplicated impetigo does not cause permanent damage to the skin, but is highly contagious.

What does it look like?

Impetigo occurs in two forms, blistering and crusted. In blistering impetigo the blisters arise on previously normal skin, and rapidly grow in size and number. The blisters quickly burst and leave slightly moist or glazed areas with a brown crust at the edge. The spots expand even after they break open and can be

many centimetres wide. They sometimes clear in the centre to produce ring shaped patterns. They are not usually painful, but can be itchy. Crusted impetigo has a thick soft yellow crust. Beneath this crust is a moist red area. Crusted impetigo spots grow slowly and are always smaller than the fully developed spots of blistering impetigo. They are not usually painful, but can be itchy. Impetigo can occur on top of other skin conditions, particularly itchy ones. When the skin is scratched the infection can enter through the broken skin. Some of these conditions are atopic dermatitis (eczema),

scabies, insect bites and head lice. In cases where a larger area of skin is affected, patients may also have a fever, swollen lymph nodes or feel generally unwell.

How is it diagnosed?

Your doctor may diagnose impetigo based on a visual inspection of the blisters/ sores, or by taking a swab to test for bacteria and check which antibiotic to use. The result of the swab takes several days.

How is it treated?

Depending on how bad the infection is, your doctor may recommend the use of an antibiotic ointment or oral antibiotics in severe cases. Antibiotic ointment should be continued until the sores have completely healed. If oral antibiotics are given it is important to finish the whole course of treatment (usually 5 days) and not stop when the impetigo starts to clear. Sores should be cleaned every 8 – 12 hours, dried thoroughly and covered with a waterproof dressing. Bathing the blisters with salty water will help to dry them out (use saline solution or dissolve about half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of water).

Communicable Diseases Factsheet Impetigo is a highly contagious

bacterial infection of the skin.

Good hygiene helps prevent spread of

infection.

If antibiotics are given it is important to

finish the whole course to make sure

the impetigo will not recur.

Impetigo

Impetigo page 2 of 2

How is it spread?

Impetigo is very easy to catch from other people. Impetigo is usually spread through direct contact with other infected people. The bacteria primarily enter through damaged skin. People with conditions causing long-term damage to their skin, such as eczema or atopic dermatitis, are at greater risk of infection.

How can you avoid spreading the infection?

While you have the infection:

Sores should be kept clean and covered with a waterproof dressing to prevent them being touched or scratched.

Used dressings should be placed in a sealed bag and put in the garbage bin as soon as they are removed.

Hands should be washed thoroughly with soap and running water for 10 – 15 seconds after sores are touched or redressed.

Children with impetigo should be kept home from school or other group settings if their wounds cannot be kept covered until 24 hours after antibiotic treatment has been started, or until the blisters have dried out if antibiotics are not used.

To prevent impetigo children should be taught: To wash their hands often with soap. Resources on handwashing can be found at

https://www.nhmrc.gov.au/guidelines-publications/ch55. Not to scratch scabs or pick their nose. Not to share their clothes, towels, or toothbrushes. To have scratches and cuts cleaned and covered.

Parents should be careful not to allow items such as clothes, towels, bed sheets, razors or toothbrushes used by the affected person to be used by others. Other grooming items, such as nail scissors or

tweezers, should be disinfected/washed thoroughly after each use. In addition to general hygiene measures, specific measures to prevent spread in schools and childcare include:

Teachers, children and families should understand the importance of hand washing, covering sores and staying home if sick

Hand washing products (soap dispensers, running water and paper towels) should be available and accessible

Activities should allow time for hand washing as part of routine practice (before eating and after going to the toilet)

Temporary exclusion from child care or school if their wounds cannot be kept covered until 24 hours after antibiotic treatment has been started, or until the blisters have dried out if antibiotics are not used

Surfaces such as counters, desks and toys that come in contact with uncovered or poorly covered infections, should be cleaned daily with detergent, and whenever visibly contaminated.

Impetigo is dangerous for babies

It is important for people with impetigo to keep away from newborns and young babies. Newborn babies

are particularly susceptible to impetigo because their immune systems are not fully developed.

What is the public health response?

Impetigo is not notifiable in NSW. Public health units can advise on the control of outbreaks. Group A streptococcal infection may lead to other rare conditions such as acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis 3–6 weeks after the skin infection, which is associated with antibodies produced to fight streptococcal infection.

In communities in Australia that have cases of rheumatic heart disease, episodes of acute rheumatic fever are thought to be triggered by impetigo as well as by throat infections with group A Streptococcus. In those communities prompt treatment and control of impetigo is an important part of preventing rheumatic heart disease.

For further information please call your local Public Health Unit on 1300 066 055
