THE READING OF THE LAWThe Word of God is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. (Ps 119:105)In His Word He tells us what is good, and what He requires of us, to dojustice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. (Mic 6:8) Butinstead we ignore the clear commands and perform acts not required byGod, ceremonies, fastings, prayer vigils, making unnecessary vows, which have only the appearance of wisdom, (Col 2:23) but we will not humble ourselves (Jms 4:10), give up our sins, (1Jn 2:1) and obey the plaincommands of God. (Mat 7:21; 12:50) All of us have sinned, and the wages ofour sin is death. (Rom 3:23; 6:23)Ex. 20:2 “I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 14 “You shall not commit adultery.”

What does the seventh Commandment teach us?That all unchastity is accursed of God,[1] and that we should thereforeloathe it with our whole heart,[2] and live chastely and modestly,[3]whether in holy wedlock or single life.[4]. (Heidelberg Catechism # 108)[1] Lev 18:27-30; Eph 5:3-5; [2] Jude 22-23; [3] 1 Thes 4:3-8; [4] 1 Cor 7:1-9; Heb 13:4

Does God forbid nothing more in this Commandment than adultery and such gross sins?Since both our body and soul are temples of the Holy Spirit, it is His willthat we keep both pure and holy; therefore, He forbids all unchaste actions, gestures, words,[1] thoughts, desires,[2] and whatever may enticethereto.[3]. (Heidelberg Catechism # 109)[1] 1 Cor 6:18-20; Eph 5:3-4; [2] Mt 5:27-30; [3] 1 Cor 15:33; Eph 5:18-19

THE CONFESSION OF SINCan you keep all this perfectly?No,[1] for I am prone by nature to hate God and my neighbor.[2](Heidelberg Catechism # 5)[1] Rom 3:10-12, 23; 1 Jn 1:8, 10; [2] Gen 6:5, 8:21; Jer 17:9; Rom 7:23, 8:7; Eph 2:3; Tit 2:3

What is your only comfort in life and in death? That I, with body and soul, both in life and in death,[1] am not my own,[2]but belong to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ,[3] who with His preciousblood[4] has fully satisfied for all my sins,[5] and redeemed me from all thepower of the devil;[6] and so preserves me[7] that without the will of myFather in heaven not a hair can fall from my head;[8] indeed, that allthings must work together for my salvation.[9] Wherefore, by His HolySpirit, He also assures me of eternal life,[10] and makes me heartily willing and ready from now on to live unto Him.[11]. (Heidelberg Catechism # 1)[1] Rom 14:7-9; [2] 1 Cor 6:19-20; [3] 1 Cor 3:23; Tit 2:14; [4] 1 Pt 1:18-19; [5] 1 Jn 1:7; 2:2; [6] Jn 8:34-36; Heb 2:14-15; 1 Jn 3:8; [7] Jn 6:39-40, 10:27-30; 2 Thes 3:3; 1 Pt 1:5; [8] Mt 10:29-31; Lk 21:16-18; [9] Rom 8:28; [10] Rom 8:15-16; 2 Cor 1:21-22, 5:5; Eph 1:13-14; [11] Rom 8:14

(SILENT CONFESSION) PRAYER OF CONFESSION* DECLARATION OF PARDON (Absolution of sin)

To you who by faith have confessed and repented of your sins, and trusted inJesus’ merit alone, I declare in the Name of Christ and by the authority ofHis Word that your sins are forgiven, the record of your transgressions isblotted away, and your everlasting salvation is hid now in Christ, who willresurrect you in the last day. (1Jn 2:12; Is 43:25; Col 3:3; Jn 6:39)Since, then, we are redeemed from our misery by grace through Christ, without any merit of ours, why must we do good works?Because Christ, having redeemed us by His blood, also renews us by HisHoly Spirit after His own image, that with our whole life we show our-selves thankful to God for His blessing,1 and that He be glorified throughus;2 then also, that we ourselves may be assured of our faith by the fruitsthereof;3 and by our godly walk win also others to Christ.4(Heidelberg Catechism # 86)[1] Rom 6:13, 12:1-2; 1 Cor 6:20; 1 Pt 2:5-10; [2] Mt 5:16; 1 Cor 6:19-20; 1 Pt 2:12; [3] Mt 7:17-18; Gal 5:6, 22-24; 2 Pt 1:10-11; [4] Mt 5:14-16; Rom 14:17-19; 1 Pt 2:12, 3:1-2; 2 Pt 1:10Matt. 5:14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor dopeople light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in thehouse. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your goodworks and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

* O.T. TEXT: Proverbs 1:20-33 Prov. 1:20Wisdom cries aloud in the street,in the markets she raises her voice;21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out;at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:22 “How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffingand fools hate knowledge?23 If you turn at my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit to you;I will make my words known to you.24 Because I have called and you refused to listen, have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded,25 because you have ignored all my counseland would have none of my reproof,26 I also will laugh at your calamity;I will mock when terror strikes you,27 when terror strikes you like a stormand your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.28 Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer;they will seek me diligently but will not find me.29 Because they hated knowledgeand did not choose the fear of Yahweh,30 would have none of my counseland despised all my reproof,31 therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way,and have their fill of their own devices.32 For the simple are killed by their turning away, and the complacency of fools destroys them;33 but whoever listens to me will dwell secureand will be at ease, without dread of disaster.”

* N.T. TEXT: John 7:25-36John 7:25 Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this theman whom they seek to kill? 26 And here he is, speaking openly, and theysay nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is theChrist? 27 But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christappears, no one will know where he comes from.” 28 So Jesus proclaimed,as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him youdo not know. 29 I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.” 30 Sothey were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because hishour had not yet come. 31 Yet many of the people believed in him. They said,“When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”32 The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and

the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him. 33 Jesus then said,“I will be with you a little longer, and then I am going to him who sent me.34 You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannotcome.” 35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to gothat we will not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among theGreeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What does he mean by saying, ‘You willseek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?”

FORMULARY (Belgic Confession Of Faith, Article 35)We believe and confess that our Savior Jesus Christ did ordain and institute

the sacrament of the holy supper1 to nourish and support those whom He hasalready regenerated and incorporated into His family, which is His Church. Now those who are regenerated have in them a twofold life,2 the one corporaland temporal, which they have from the first birth and is common to all men;the other spiritual and heavenly, which is given them in their second birth, which is effected by the Word of the gospel,3 in the communion of the bodyof Christ; and this life is not common, but is peculiar to God’s elect. In likemanner God has given us, for the support of the bodily and earthly life, earthly and common bread, which is subservient thereto and is common to allmen, even as life itself. But for the support of the spiritual and heavenly lifewhich believers have He has sent a living bread, which descended fromheaven,4 namely, Jesus Christ,5 who nourishes and strengthens the spirituallife of believers6 when they eat Him, that is to say, when they appropriate andreceive Him by faith in the spirit.7In order that He might represent unto us this spiritual and heavenly bread,

Christ has instituted earthly and visible bread as a sacrament of His body, andwine as a sacrament of His blood,8 to testify by them unto us that, as certainlyas we receive and hold this sacrament in our hands and eat and drink thesame with our mouths, by which our life is afterwards nourished, we also doas certainly receive by faith9 (which is the hand and mouth of our soul) thetrue body and blood of Christ our only Savior, in our souls, for the support ofour spiritual life. Now, as it is certain and beyond all doubt that Jesus Christ has not

enjoined to us the use of His sacraments in vain, so He works in us all thatHe represents to us by these holy signs, though the manner surpasses our understanding and cannot be comprehended by us, as the operations of theHoly Spirit are hidden and incomprehensible.10 In the meantime we err notwhen we say that what is eaten and drunk by us is the proper and naturalbody and the proper blood of Christ. But the manner of our partaking of thesame is not by the mouth, but by the spirit through faith. Thus, then, thoughChrist always sits at the right hand of His Father in the heavens,11 yet does He not therefore cease to make us partakers of Himself by faith. This feast is a spiritual table, at which Christ communicates Himself with

all His benefits to us, and gives us there to enjoy both Himself and the meritsof His sufferings and death:12 nourishing, strengthening, and comforting ourpoor comfortless souls by the eating of His flesh, quickening and refreshingthem by the drinking of His blood.Further, though the sacraments are connected with the thing signified

nevertheless both are not received by all men.13 The ungodly indeed receivesthe sacrament to his condemnation, but he does not receive the truth of thesacrament, even as Judas and Simon the sorcerer both indeed received thesacrament not Christ who was signified by it,14 of whom believers only aremade partakers.15

Lastly, we receive this holy sacrament in the assembly of the people of God,16 with humility and reverence, keeping up among us a holy remembrance of the death of Christ our Savior, with thanksgiving, makingconfession of our faith and of the Christian religion.17 Therefore no one ought to come to this table without having previously rightly examined himself, lest by eating of this bread and drinking of this cup he eat and drink judgment to himself.18 In a word, we are moved by the use of this holy sacrament to a fervent love of God and our neighbor. Therefore we reject all mixtures and damnable inventions which men

have added unto and blended with the sacraments, as profanations of them;and affirm that we ought to rest satisfied with the ordinance which Christ and His apostles have taught us, and that we must speak of them in the same manner as they have spoken.1. Lord’s Day Worship Service (9:30)* CALL TO WORSHIP* PSALM 115: Not Unto Us, O Lord Of HeavenREADING OF THE LAW and CONFESSION OF SIN* HYMN: Jesus Thy Blood And RighteousnessPASTORAL PRAYER * O.T. TEXT: Genesis 1:26-27; 5:3; Psalm 115

Gen. 1:26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of theheavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creepingthing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in his own image, inthe image of God he created him; male and female he created them.5:3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth.Psa. 115:1 Not to us, Yahweh, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!2 Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” 3 Our God is in the

heavens; he does all that he pleases.4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. 5 They have

mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see. 6 They have ears, but do nothear; noses, but do not smell. 7 They have hands, but do not feel; feet, but donot walk; and they do not make a sound in their throat. 8 Those who makethem become like them; so do all who trust in them.9 O Israel, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield. 10 O house

of Aaron, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield. 11 You who fearthe LORD, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield.12 The LORD has remembered us; he will bless us; he will bless the house

of Israel; he will bless the house of Aaron; 13 he will bless those who fear theLORD, both the small and the great.14 May the LORD give you increase, you and your children! 15 May you be

blessed by the LORD, who made heaven and earth!16 The heavens are the LORD heavens, but the earth he has given to the

children of man. 17 The dead do not praise the LORD, nor do any who godown into silence. 18 But we will bless the LORD from this time forth andforevermore.Hallelujah! [Praise the Lord!]

TEXT: Romans 1:22-23; 8:29; Colossians 2:8-15; 3:1-14; 1John 5:20-21Rom. 1:22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged theglory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds andanimals and creeping things.Rom. 8:29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformedto the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among manybrothers.Col. 2:8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of theworld, and not according to Christ. 9 For in him the whole fullness of deitydwells bodily, 10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule

and authority. 11 In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision madewithout hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision ofChrist, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were alsoraised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raisedhim from the dead. 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and theuncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stoodagainst us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.3:1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above,

where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on thingsthat are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and yourlife is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity,

passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account ofthese the wrath of God is coming. 7 In these you too once walked, when youwere living in them. 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10 andhave put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after theimage of its creator. 11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate

hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; asthe Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all theseput on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 1John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him whois true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21 Littlechildren, keep yourselves from idols.
