FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Welcome back! This has been a long extended Lent, and a rather dismal Easter Season without having public Mass. I know how much people have stayed connected to Mass through streaming from many churches. Maybe many of you took advantage of the opportunity to make a virtual pilgrimage to churches you hadn’t seen before in the diocese, around the country, and even to Pope Francis’ chapel in Vatican City. So many have been attentive to the needs of your family members and neighbors during this time. Many have offered help with preparing the churches for our return. Whether I could put you to work or not, I am very grateful for all the offers.

Our RCIA candidates will be welcomed into the Church on Sunday afternoon at a special 2:00 p.m. Mass at St. Rose. Please keep them in your prayers. They have been waiting an extended period of time this year to receive their sacraments. We are overjoyed that they can be confirmed and receive their First Eucharist on Pentecost!

Pentecost is the end of the 50-day Easter Season which we spent celebrating Jesus’ victory over death in His Resurrection, His Ascension to the Father, and finally the sending of the Advocate and Consoler, the Holy Spirit. We need the presence of the Holy Spirit now more than ever in our lives. He reminds us of the teachings of Jesus Christ and guides us to all truth. He is with us and for us always. The Holy Spirit sanctifies us. He elevates our words and actions reminding us of His presence. Think of the Apostles gathered in the Upper Room in prayer with Mary. They were still filled with fear. Then, they hear that sound like a strong driving wind, tongues as of fire rest on them, and they fearlessly proclaim God’s word to the large crowd that began to gather! Don’t you think this could be the beginning of a new Pentecost for the Church? What an opportunity we have to proclaim the risen Jesus Christ to people!

While we are excited to come back, we also realize that things are far from normal. That’s immediately evident by the face coverings people wear, by the simpler liturgies we now experience for a temporary period of time on Sundays, and by the social distancing we’re still encouraged to maintain.

In our desire to return to a somewhat normal way of life, we must allow some time to acknowledge and grieve the loss many have experienced. We’ve lost love ones. Not necessarily directly related to the virus. However, it was during the time of the virus, which didn’t allow families and parishes to grieve like we’re used to. We should be attentive and considerate of this. We pray for the repose of the souls of Rosemary “Tosie” Allen, James Gilligan, Karen Gelbaugh, Ron Vigue, Louella “Pug” Henry, Constance Forgrave, Jim Myer, Rosemary McCabe, and Joanne Shreves and for consolation for their families.

Our high school seniors missed out on many milestone activities such as prom and graduation. Canceling these important events is normally unthinkable. We want to offer our support and congratulations to those seniors who have worked hard in these last four years, and who haven’t been able to celebrate as they had hoped. There is still great uncertainty about what the job market looks like for them or how the university landscape might change. Our 8th graders are in a similar situation. We weren’t able to make our long-awaited visit to the Motherhouse of the Franciscan Sisters of Penance and Christian Charity and to see Niagara Falls. We are disappointed with those who were so looking forward to these and many other experiences over these past two months.

Many birthday parties and anniversaries have been muted in their celebrations. Still, with the loss of these celebrations, we take extra special account of the loved ones we have with us. We remember the importance of being with the ones we love. We trust that sickness, distress and even death cannot separate us forever from the ones that we love. As people of faith, Jesus assures us of this.

At the time of writing this the new pastor for the Consortium has not been announced. I will make that announcement as soon as it’s ready.

REMINDERS:1. If you take a missalette to use during Mass, take it home with you. DO NOT return it to the stack. 2. If you take a bulletin before Mass, DO NOT leave it in your pew after Mass, and DO NOT return it to the stack of

bulletins. We have more than enough. This will assist our ushers in tidying up after Mass, and will minimize their risk of exposure.

3. Since we are dispensed from our Sunday Mass obligation this summer, please consider assisting at a daily Mass instead. This is a consideration especially in our smaller capacity churches of St. Patrick and Church of the Atonement.

4. DO be considerate of others!

May the Gifts of the Holy Spirit be renewed and strengthened in each one of us on this Solemnity of Pentecost!

In Christ Jesus,Fr. Hartge

CATECHISM CORNER 1076: The Church was made manifest to the world on the day of Pentecost by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The gift of the Spirit ushers in a new era in the “dispensation of the mystery“ the age of the Church, during which Christ manifests, makes present, and communicates his work of salvation through the liturgy of his Church, “until he comes.“ In this age of the Church Christ now lives and acts in and with his Church, in a new way appropriate to this new age. He acts through the sacraments in what the common Tradition of the East and the West calls “the sacramental economy,“ this is the communication (or “dispensation“) of the fruits of Christ›s Paschal mystery in the celebration of the Church’s “sacramental“ liturgy. 1556: To fulfill their exalted mission, “the apostles were endowed by Christ with a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit coming upon them, and by the imposition of hands they passed on to their auxiliaries the gift of the Spirit, which is transmitted down to our day through episcopal consecration.”1108: In every liturgical action the Holy Spirit is sent in order to bring us into communion with Christ and so to form his Body. The Holy Spirit is like the sap of the Father’s vine which bears fruit on its branches. The most intimate cooperation of the Holy Spirit and the Church is achieved in the liturgy. The Spirit who is the Spirit of communion, abides indefectibly in the Church. For this reason the Church is the great sacrament of divine communion which gathers God’s scattered children together. Communion with the Holy Trinity and fraternal communion are inseparably the fruit of the Spirit in the liturgy.1109: The epiclesis is also a prayer for the full effect of the assembly’s communion with the mystery of Christ. “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit“ have to remain with us always and bear fruit beyond the Eucharistic celebration. The Church therefore asks the Father to send the Holy Spirit to make the lives of the faithful a living sacrifice to God by their spiritual transformation into the image of Christ, by concern for the Church’s unity, and by taking part in her mission through the witness and service of charity.
