QUOTES: Supporting evidence of hope

• “There’s another thing. We can help them to find us. If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the

mountain. We must make a fire.” PAGE 37

• Since Ralph was elected leader, he had directed his efforts towards being rescued alone. He had planned to make a fire in hope of getting rescued.

QUOTES: (continued)

• Ralph spoke. “You let the fire out.” The repetition made Jack uneasy. He looked at the twins and than back at Ralph. “We had to have them in the hunt.” PAGE 73

• Ralph is not pleased with the fact that the fire was left to burn out, and is very angered by Jack’s neglect towards his authority. The purpose of the fire was to have faith that rescue was possible and that someone would find them. Jack does not seem to be bothered by this and is more interested in hunting. This then brings conflict between the two boys who are struggling for power.

• “Look at us! How many are we? And yet we cant keep a fire going to make smoke. Don’t you understand? Cant you see we ought to-ought to die before we let the fire out?” PAGE 86

• The significance of this quote is highlighting the desire to be rescued. Everyone is starting to forget how important rescue is and how badly they need to be saved. This quote is directing them back to the idea of rescue and making them realize that the signal fire is more important.

Hope

• In dire circumstances hope can be used as a final chance for survival. As the story progresses all the boys have fully adapted to Jack’s lifestyle except for Ralph. Hope is slowly lost in every boy throughout the story and by the very end as Ralph is hunted by his original tribe members he feels himself holding onto the only hope he has left as a means of survival.
