St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church

From Our Pastor, Fr. Matthew Zuberbueler

Dear Friends, Isn’t it great that we can pray the famous St. Patrick’s Breastplate prayer and know that God is with us and all around us and here to help us AND that we can also make a point to go visit Him in the church, even receive Him in Holy Communion?! God is with us! The momentous event of the Transfiguration helps us un-derstand more about the way God is present to us. When He permitted a glimpse of His glory to be seen by the three Apostles, He helped them to trust Him. The experi-ence was so overwhelming they fell asleep. Then, when awake, Peter seemed to speak without understanding what he was saying. What he said, though, wasn’t so terribly off base: “Lord, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” Those words can link us back to the Old Testament and ahead to our day. The Latin word for tent helps us to see the link: tabernaculum! In the Old Testament, in Exodus, Moses and the Chosen People lived with God in their midst. He was to be found beneath the cloud or the pillar of fire in the tent, that is, the tabernacle. We know that in our day we can find Jesus in the tabernacle in our parish church. The people of old, like us, did not see God as He is—in fact they feared doing so. Nonetheless, they, like us, knew He was with them and therefore, they could be with Him. Jesus is the place where God dwells. His acceptance of our human flesh gave Him a recognizable place to be. This is true in history (when He was here among us) and it is true now. His physical Real Presence is in glory in Heaven. And it is here among us in the tent, or as we say, the tabernacle. Peter was on to something. Seek the Lord! He is here for us. The “three tents” remind us of the one in Exodus, our own one in church, and the Flesh of Jesus in His Incarnation. With my prayers, Fr. Matthew Zuberbueler Pastor P.S. Happy St. Patrick’s Day! This is the day of my Bap-tism—and of my twin brother, Patrick. But don’t look for me here…I’m out doing a parish mission for another par-ish. More on that later.

An Important Change As we try to create and maintain a prayerful atmosphere here in the church, please make every effort to resist the habit of clapping after the closing hymn at Mass. While we truly appreciate the work of our choirs and musi-cians, there are more appropriate ways to express it. They do what they do as a way of praising God with the very gifts and talents He has shared with them.

Have you noticed?!! A few weeks ago we made an upgrade in the church which has had a very big effect on the atmosphere here for worshiping God. Have you noticed that the awful exploding sounds that were coming from the speak-ers at random times have stopped happening? Thanks to a generous donor (say a prayer for him) we were able to install some new equipment in the choir area which seems to have corrected the problem. May it enhance our prayer by preventing the interruption of loud and unwelcome noises!
