Sunday School & Bible Classes (all ages) at 9:45AM 5th Sundays: 9:30 AM service/11 AM Potluck

Our Mission: To share God’s love in Jesus Christ by word and deed.

We Warmly Welcome You to Our Worship Services: We welcome all visitors and pray that our worship will provide an opportunity for you to experi-ence God’s love. We invite you to return and share in our mission and ministry for our Savior.

Attendance Registration Books: Please fill out the attendance registration book found in the hymnal holders on the backs of the pews and chairs. Print neatly using complete name and address. Pass it down your row; after everyone has filled it out, return it to the center isle to be collected by the ushers.

Holy Communion: We proclaim that the body and blood of Christ are present with the bread and wine in the Sacrament for the forgiveness of sins and recommitment of our lives. Those able to exam-ine themselves, accept Jesus as their Savior, confess their sins, and acknowledge his true presence in the Sacrament are welcome to partake. Holy Communion is offered with both common and individual cups. If you desire the common cup, wait for the server to bring it. The common cup is filled with wine. The individual cups also have wine, except for the inner ring of cups in the serving tray, which hold white grape juice. Gluten-free wafers are available. If you have questions, please speak to the Pastor. If you would like assistance to the altar during communion, speak to an usher.

Nursery and Infant Care Rooms: Nursery care is available for children under four years of age from 8:15am – 12:15pm on first floor; take south elevator from narthex to first floor. The Infant Care Room with a changing table and rocker is located in Classroom 213 on the sanctuary level (second floor). Additional changing tables are available on the sanctuary level in the family and men’s restrooms, in the women’s restroom located across the hall from the Nursery in the lower level, and women’s restroom on the same floor as the Activity Center.

Sunday School: Visitors: If you are visiting today and your child would like to attend Sunday school, please bring the child to Rooms 214 and 215, east of the sanctuary where they will be directed to the appro-priate classroom.

Fellowship Between Services: Please join us for refreshments and socializing in the Activity Center. Thank you!

Special Needs: Visual: Large print service folders services are available. Hearing: Hand-held amplification receivers with ear pieces are available at the usher's table. Deaf and Hard of Hearing attendees of the early service are encouraged to follow the American Sign Language (ASL) translation of the liturgy as provided by volunteers of the parish's Deaf Min-istry. Mobility: Spaces in the center aisle next to the short pews in the sanctuary are reserved for wheelchairs, scooters and seated walkers. In addition, two wheelchairs are available for use in the building. One is located on first floor of the west accessible entrance near the elevator; the second is located in the coat rack of the narthex near the sanctuary.

RISE, SHINE, FOR YOUR LIGHT HAS COME AS WE GATHER Today we combine the celebration of The Epiphany of Our Lord with The Baptism of Our Lord. This gives us an opportunity to usher in the Epiphany season and to celebrate the special manifestation of Christ in our individual lives through the Sacrament of Holy Bap-tism. PRE-SERVICE MUSIC INSTALLATION OF CHURCH COUNCIL AND ELDERS (11:00 a.m. worship service only) CHILDREN’S MESSAGE Stand, as you are able. OPENING SENTENCES P: The people who walked in darkness C: have seen a great light; P: those who lived in a land of deep darkness— C: on them light has shined. (Isaiah 9:2) P: And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, C: the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14). but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses’ arms. Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you,

the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come.

They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord. A: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. HYMN OF RESPONSE Hymn 395 "O Morning Star, How Fair and Bright," stanza 1 SECOND READING—Ephesians 3:1-12

This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles —or surely you have already heard of the commission of God’s grace that was given to me for you, and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, a reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have become fellow-heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Je-sus through the gospel.

Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God’s grace that was given to me by the working of his power. Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who cre-ated all things; so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him. A: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

HYMN OF RESPONSE Hymn 395 "O Morning Star, How Fair and Bright," stanza 2 Stand, as you are able. GOSPEL—Matthew 2:1-12 P: The holy gospel according to Matthew. C: Glory to you, O Lord.

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: ’And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.’”

Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.” When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure-chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by an-other road. P: The gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Let us pray for the whole people of God, and for all people according to their needs. (A moment of silence) Gracious God and heavenly Father, in the darkness of this world's spiritual night, you creat-ed a special star to guide the Wise Men to your Son. C: For this and all other revelations of your glory, we give you thanks. P: We confess that we have not always permitted your Son Jesus to be the light of our lives. C: Forgive us, Lord. P: For kindling in us the light of your love through Holy Baptism, C: we are eternally grateful. P: Empower us to bring your Gospel to those who are still outside your family circle. C: May your presence be a source of strength to the weak, a companion to the lonely, and a ray of hope to the discouraged. P: Especially, today, hear our prayers for…Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: These and all the thoughts and desires of our hearts we bring before you in the name of Jesus, the Light of the world. C: Amen Sit GATHERING OF OFFERINGS

HYMN “From Wilderness to Jordan Came” [Tune: Puer nobis, LSB 344] 1 From wilderness to Jordan came the final Prophet to proclaim that judgment soon was to begin to punish Israel for their sin. 2 Although of Abraham's descent, since all have sinned, all must repent, and, like the Gentiles, undergo a Baptism, and its import show. 3 But when Christ came, no judgment dire did he pronounce with venging fire; himself the Baptism underwent, the sinless, perfect penitent. Stand as you are able. HOLY GOSPEL—Mark 1:4-11 (Please see the final page of this worship folder.) P: The holy gospel according to Mark. C: Glory to you, O Lord. P: The gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM P: Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God’s mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.

Holy God, holy and merciful, holy and mighty, you are the river of life, you are the everlasting wellspring, you are the fire of rebirth.

Glory to you for oceans and lakes, for rivers and streams. Honor to you for clouds and rain, for dew and snow. Your waters are below us, around us, above us: our life is born in you. You are the fountain of resurrection.

Praise to you for your saving waters: Noah and the animals survive the flood, Hagar discovers your well.

4 On him the Spirit, like a dove, descended, and the Father`s love voiced his approval that the Son mankind's salvation had begun. (All stand for the final stanza in honor of the Holy Trinity.) 5 All glory, Lord, to you we pay for your epiphany today; and to the Father tribute bring,

as by the Spirit here we sing.

The Israelites escape through the sea, and they drink from your gushing rock. Naaman washes his leprosy away, and the Samaritan woman will never be thirsty again.

Praise to you for the water of baptism and for your Word that saves us in this sacrament. Breathe your Spirit into all who are gathered here and into all creation. Illumine our days. Enliven our bones. Dry our tears. Wash away the sin with us, and drown the evil around us. Satisfy all our thirst with your living water, Jesus Christ, our Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

FLU SEASON: Influenza season is here. The Health and Wellness Committee highly rec-ommends anyone age 6 months or older (who is eligible) get their flu vaccines. If you are in need of financial assistance, please notify a member of the Health and Wellness Commit-tee for a pharmacy gift card.

PLEASE HELP PROVIDE RIDES TO CHURCH. We have a couple of members of the congregation that need rides to church and back home. We need this help for both the first and second services. Please sign-up in the narthex. We would like to get many volunteers so that your service would only be needed once a month or once every two months. This is a great way to get to better know your fellow Immanuel members! Please see Dudley Karstensen for any questions. Thank you!

CONTRIBUTIONS FOR NEW STAFF POSITION As you know, Immanuel has added a staff position to the budget to assist with the education ministry, college ministry and the music ministry. Please consider regular giving to fund that position. Donations can be made using the designated gift envelopes or they may be included in your regular giving envelope. Please put “new staff position” on the memo line on your check. Immanuel will need to have at least one year of salary in the account before advertising for the position.

NEED A MEMBER’S ADDRESS OR EMAIL? We update the church directory on the first of each month on the website. Be sure you update the office with any changes in emails, phone numbers and addresses by the 25

th of the month. You can view the most updated

version of Immanuel’s Directory of Members on our website: immanuellawrence.org. After logging in, go to Members Only (bar at top of page). Go to the Resources pull -down tab and select Documents. You will see a link there to Immanuel Lutheran Church Directory of Members. Call the church office if you have any questions. Thank you.

FUNERAL PLANNING: In the days following a death, it can often be overwhelming for family members to put together the details of a funeral. Whether it is following a long illness or a surprising accident, your loved ones may wonder what your wishes really were. Have you identified your wishes, written them down, and shared them with your family? To help you with this decision-making, ILCUSC’s Health and Wellness Committee has printed a “Funeral Planning Worksheet” for your use. You may find copies of this document on the table in the church’s library (room 223).

GENEROSITY THOUGHT—Mark 1:7 “[John] proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his san-dals.” John is right: Jesus is immensely greater than any of us, yet behold how he came to serve! That is the upside down, outlandish grace of God: the innocent Jesus takes the sin-ner’s place. This is the greatest act of giving the world has ever known or will know: the Father gives the Son to die in the place of sinners.

A GREAT WAY YOU CAN HELP A HURTING FRIEND

Do you have a friend, neighbor, coworker, or relative who has suffered a loss or is going through a difficult time? Here’s a great way you can help them —tell them about our Stephen Ministry! Stephen Ministers are members of Immanuel-University, who have received special training to provide high quality, confi-dential, one-to-one, Christian care to hurting people. Stephen Ministers meet weekly with their care receivers to listen, care, encourage, and provide emo-tional and spiritual support. (Males are matched with males, and females are matched with females.) The caring relationship lasts for as long as the person needs care. It’s free, and it’s a powerful way you can help a hurting friend.

To learn how to connect someone you know with a Stephen Minister, talk with our Stephen Ministry Leader, Pastor Randy. Our Stephen Ministers are there to care!

THE BAPTISM OF OUR LORD - Mark 1:4–11 (January 7)

“The law was no longer to have validity, because the Man had now come for whose sake the Law had hitherto been observed. John, too, now looked upon his office as terminated; for now he had appeared who baptized not only with water, but also with the Holy Spirit.” LW 22:161
