TRENDINGThe right mix of style and simplicity will be the highlights of floral design this year. Non-traditional floral items will continue such as berries, succulents and greenery of seeded eucalyptus, bay leaves, olive branches, ferns and ivy. These will accent cascading bouquets with long ribbons, garland and creative centerpieces down the center of the tables. “Just picked” floral arrangements of whatever is in season and whatever is local are gaining traction. These free form bouquets have a mix of both big and small blooms and consist of more than one color.

WHAT TO ASKSHOULD I ORDER EXTRAS?Round up your guest list when estimating some service items. For example, if you expect 200 guests, you should order at least 350 water glasses because each person will often go through more than one glass.

WHERE DO THE FLOWERS COME FROM? The grower really affects the final product. Some growers have a trained eye and harvest only the best flowers at the perfect time. Others mass-produce their product, focusing on quantity over quality.

HOW DO THEY COME PACKED?Wholesalers also affect price and quality. Some take better care of the flowers than others, delivering the flowers in water instead of without.

HOW DO THEY PROCESS THEIR FLOWERS? Florists spend hours prepping before design (de-thorn, strip foliage, use special products, preserve in a cooler, carefully handle so no bruising occurs).

HOW DO THEY ENSURE THE FLOWERS

WILL LAST AS LONG AS POSSIBLE?Some florists take extra steps – such as camouflaging bouquet holders to boost longevity.

Also included is the time spent finding flowers and products, and then placing orders. Growers and wholesalers that take better care of, and provide better products, will increase the costliness of the final product.

The flowers you choose greatly affect the price. Exotic, out-of-season flowers will cost more than readily available and easy-to-grow blooms.

MOTHER NATURE

Droughts, natural disasters, and other weather anomalies affect the bottom line.

PREPPING PRODUCTS

Before your arrangements can be beautifully displayed, the florist must clean containers, remove stickers, and prepare for design.PREPPING FLOWERS

The stems must be cleaned, flowers hydrated and examined for quality.

ACTUAL DESIGN TIME

The time it takes to plan a design and to create the arrangements is included in the price.

DELIVERY & SETUP/TEAR-DOWN

This is often included if within a certain distance, but may involve an extra fee.

EXPERT ADVICEThe flower market has really opened up worldwide this year. Florists can get nearly any flower at any time of year. However, make sure you order well in advance as wholesalers require florists to make their purchases over a month in advance.
