From 2012-‐2013, there were a total of 127 accidental overdose deaths in Lorain County.
• Of the 127 accidental overdose deaths, 106 (83%) were associated with heroin and/or other opiate use.
• Heroin use made up 41% of total accidental overdose deaths and 49% of opiate related overdose deaths.

The following were the most common opiates1 found to be related to these accidental drug overdose deaths. It is important to note that some individual cases may have included more than one of the drugs listed below and others not listed.

1An Opiate is the most natural product of the Opium Poppy plant and these include morphine and codeine. Opioid is semi-‐synthetic and is derived from Opiates. These include hydrocodone, hydromorphone, oxycodone, oxymorphone, tramadol, fentanyl and heroin. For this report, Opiate will be the general term used to describe both the pure and semi-‐synthetic forms of this drug.

Total Number of Accidental Overdose Deaths, 2012-‐2013 From 2012 -‐2013, there was an 11.7% increase in the total number of accidental overdose deaths.

There were total of 21 (20%) cases from 2012-‐2013, in which ethanol was also found in the toxicology reports along with traces of at least one opiate.
The use of heroin related to accidental overdose deaths increased 74% from 2012 to 2013. There were a total of 19 and 33 accidental overdose deaths respectively each year associated with the use of heroin.
From 2012 to 2013, there was a 16% increase in the number of accidental overdose deaths associated with the use of opiates. It is important to note that with some cases, there may be other classes of drugs that were also associated with the cause of death.

• The average age of accidental overdose deaths was 40.6 years old.
• The average age of accidental overdose deaths for women was 41.2 years old and the average age of accidental overdose deaths for men was 40.3 years old.

• The average age of heroin accidental overdose deaths was 38 years old. • The average age of opiate (not including heroin) accidental overdose deaths was 41 years old. • The average age of all opiate (including heroin) accidental overdose deaths was 40 years old.
• The average of opiate accidental overdose deaths for women was 42 years old and for men the average age was 39 years old.

• From 2012-‐2013, 46 (43%) accidental overdose deaths related to opiate use (including heroin) were single.
• Of the 52 heroin accidental overdose deaths, there were 28 (54%) associated with an accidental overdose death of a single person.
