las buitreras fishing lodge

After this season I think it’s clearer than ever before. If possible, use single-hand rods and keep wading to aminimum. The fish are there, but splashing a long two-hand line on the surface nearly guarantees they will notbite. This is as technical as it gets, but at the same timequite easy! The cast does not need to be so long, onlyquiet and controlled. Keep contact with the fly and movethe fly, wade as little as possible and it will happen!

We have been very spoiled using only certain sectionsof our available water. Tomas Ögren and I spent a weekfishing new areas from both sides of the river with greatsuccess. There’s still a lot of water to be discovered undervarying conditions. How many world class stretches offishing can say that?

The season was exciting with all the big fish and asalways the lodge functioned perfectly under the supervi-sion of camp manager Claudio Martin.

in length and has its origin in the Southern Andes with two pristine and verybeautifulstreams, the Penitente and the Ruebens. Winding its way through the wild Patagonian landscape it emerges into thesurprisingly moun-tainous area that encompasses the unique Las Buitreras beats, some 40kms from the river mouth. The flood plain that liesbetween theseoutcrops teems with birdlife, alongside large numbers of rheas, silver foxes, horses, hares, flamingos and guanacos.

A trip to Rio Gallegos River offers the adventurous angler the opportunity to pit his skills against the explosive searunning trouts of

Patagonia. These fish can reach sizes of 25lbs and over and will reward the angler with arm wrenching takes and blisteringruns, inter-spersed with regular acrobatic displays.

Loop’s Las Buitreras lodge is home to the most prolific beats on the Rio Gallegos, consisting of over 40kms of both sidesprivate watercomprising over 50 named pools. The fishing is exciting and varied with pools ranging from deep stony runs to cut banksand streamyshingle flats. Relatively shallow, the river makes for easy wading, obviating the need for fast sinking lines and creating anexciting andchallenging fishing environment. It is this variety in combination with the visually inspiring mountainous outcrops thatmakes this part ofthe Rio Gallegos quite simply one of the most spectacular stretches of fly fishing water in Patagonia.

Sometimes explosive, always challenging, fishing for sea trout requires a level of skill, stealth and understanding thatcan frustrate

The lake is nothing else than a biological sensation and contains millions uponmillions of fresh water shrimp (krill, scuds). The fish grow to huge sizes eatingonly the protein-enriched shrimps all year around. This is simply the most Ome-ga-3 fat fish you have ever seen. Yes, it’s possible to eat and taste during the stay.

We have also seen that the rainbows are making their way into the smallstream (the only stream in the lake) to spawn nearly all months of the year, as longas the river has water. All we can gather is that the vast numbers of rainbows hascreated its own ecological system and its unending food source has pushed thesefish to   year-around-spawners  , depending on water level in the small stream thatfeeds the lake by the Loop River camp.

Arriving at Jurassic Lake you will quickly realize just how far removed you arefrom the real world, as the shear vastness of this secluded country is beyondbelief. The large lake is roughly 20 km by 15km, situated approx. 1000m oversea level, and looks more like a saltwater body of water with its crystal clear bluewater and channels, corals and shelves.

Our first exploratory trip had us casting into this huge body of water with littleto no expectations. After being broke off a half dozen times we quickly realizedthere was something strange going on here. These huge fish are much, muchmore then just abnormally large, as they are pound for pound one of the strongest fish we have ever seen. The bloodcurdling runs areonly interrupted by jumps that often involve leaps far above your head. Do not put your hands anywhere near your reelhandle, as you willsurely risk loosing some skin or even break a finger.

from LasBuitrerasand the flight back to Buenos Aires will be fromCala-fate which takes approximately 7 hrs from thecamp. The drive is through the wildest stretches ofPatagoniaand offers many chances to see and take photosof allwild animals and beautiful nature, and with a bitofluck you might even see a wild puma. Please ensure your baggage carries the contact details of our Argentinean Operations officer:

Gabriel TournourSan Martin 923Rio Gallegos, ArgentinaPh: +54-2966 420 368E-mail: [email protected]

This will ensure that lost baggage can be redirected to us.

Pack light, warm and windproof clothing. Most of the fishing occurs in the Argentine summer, but at parallel 53 south, thedays can bechilly, particularly when the wind blows! Those visiting us in the late season can count on cold mornings and evenings.Windbloc andWindstopper fleece products are very good and when combined with breathable waders and jacket, offer superiorprotection that willkeep you warm and comfortable all day. Prepare to dress in layers. The sun is intense because the ozone layer is thin in thispart of theworld and you may encounter very warm weather as well. Tropical  flats clothing  in neutral colors can be worn toadvantage underwarmer outer layers. Remember your sunscreen and polarized sunglasses!

Argentina is a wonderful country and we are often asked for additional programmes to enhance our guests’ experience.Aside of theJurassic Lake add on to Buitreras program, we have also the following recommendations:

Everyone that has visited Las Buitreras knows that our former Lodge Manager Martina McNamara is one of the people thathas made Buit-reras the  magic  place it is. Martina is also a teacher in the University for Wild Life Management and we know that nobodywill take careof you better than Martina. Programs can be customized to guests, why not non fishing guests in Buitreras, specificationsand for examplecould include: Monte Leon National Park, Los Glacieres National Park, Stag River and more.

around 10 lb, with the biggestlanded so far at 120cm long. We have seen, and lost, evenbigger ones. Is there any other place like Loop JurassicRiver Camp in the world? We don´ t think so!

We don’t count fish at Jurassic Lake, as it is not impor-tant, but let us at least say there is enough fish to keep youbusy the whole day. For those who love a real challengethere is some great shallow water sight fishing to be hadalong the shorelines. It is not uncommon to see pods ofgiant fish cruising the edges in search of food that tries toescape. It is also fun to take a smaller rod up the creek, forsome dry fly fishing, mainly in Nov-mid Jan.

to be the most effective thus far, withblack, purple, red, white and yellow all working fine. Thereal secret is to have several different patterns and a lotof each. Use strong hooks only. Bring along some scudpatterns for sightfishing and an assortment of dry flies and nymphs as well.

We have also, when weather permits, used 9’ # 5 rods with floating lines, dries and nymphs with big success. Real fun,not easy to land

them though. Whatever fly or line used – the key is to fish the fly slow, real slow, since these fish are not used to chase thefood. Their eat-ing behavior is more like swimming with mouth open zipping in the food.

For the lake a are the tools of choice. Loop Opti Coast rod with hi-dense core (handlesthe windbetter) Loop Multi lines is a safe setup. A high quality reel with a good dragsystem ishighly recommended and your reels should have at least 100 yards of backing on them. We recommend, of course, EvotecG4, Multior Opti Runner reels. If you like the sound of screaming reels Loop Classic is a good choice. All these reels will handle thetough   sand winds and water since they are properly sealed and have hi-quality bearings and shafts. Floating, intermediate and sinking

They will cook, clean thecamp and helpout with anything needed. It is hard work in the middle of nowhere so we hope all can accept this.

Loop Tackle will have some fishing gear suitable for fishing the lakeand stream available at the camps and can be used by our guests ifthey like. There will not be a   tackle shop  available, but we will havesome extra waders, jackets, leaders, flies and some tippet materialavailable.

This is the spawning season and normally the river has sufficient water and is virtually full offish with a mixof colored fish and fresh silver from the lake. There is huge   traffic  in the bay outside the camp; here also is a mix ofcolored fish andfresh torpedoes. This period it is possible to catch more wild and bigger rainbows than anywhere else on the planet. 50 fishin a day isnormal with records well above 50 fish per day. If you think it is too many you just walk 100 meters to next bay where youcan sight fishfor the odd big bright specimens, this goes for the whole lake, and maybe catch 5-10 fish in a good day.

This period is colder with the bay full of fish yet again. During this period they are fatter and most are chrometrains thatwill empty your reel – fast! This period can be a bit cold but fantastic!

This is high summer and after 4 seasons we can now see the pattern with fishmainly cruisingaround out in the lake. If the wind presses colder water to the bay there can be some fantastic evening and mornings. Thisperiod is defi-nitely slower compared to Jurassic River normal standards, but if compared with other wild rainbow fisheries it is still hardto beat. Full

Small nymphs are also usedregularly when thetrout become very selective. Doubles are fine, but please leave the trebles at home. Most of the fishing requires you to stripthe fly.

When the water is stirred up by the wind or colored from rain, tubes and larger flies work very well. In turbid waterconditions, we like

bulky flies that push the water. Tubes tied in the  Temple Dog  style on plastic and/or brass in all colors and sizes are good tohave along.

There are a few pools where seatrout can be taken by simply swinging the fly as one would for Atlantic Salmon, butgenerally speaking, these fish don’t favor the same type of lies as salmon do. They lie in quieter seams and tails and the motion imparted by

The lodge I can only describe as fabu-lous along with the food they servedthere. The accommodation was first classbearing in mind we were in the middle ofnowhere.

Then there was the fishing. What can onesay after being lucky enough to catch notone fish of a lifetime but two. I neverthought for a moment that I would actu-ally catch a 19 and 21 lb sea trout.

There was so much to love about the fishingnot just the fish themselves but the scen-ery and wildlife amongst which you fishedfor these magnificent creatures.

Then lastly there were the Guides.Thesemen were absolutely fantastic and ablyled by Claudio.Their enthusiasm and genuine love of fish-ing was infectious, and would do every-thing within their power to help makethis a truly unique experience.

I believe that more people should experi-ence this adventure to atruly wild and windswept part of Argen-tina. Mike Humphries
