FISCAL YEAR 2018based on audited statements

The 2018 Fiscal Year saw the end of the Conservancy’s 50th year, and the beginning of our 51st. The Conservancy’s 50 years of preservation, conservation and archival accomplishments – and Founder Shirley Hanson – were recognized by Preservation PA’s Chairman’s Award. The Conservancy celebrated with a gift to Chestnut Hill, launching the “Night of Lights” public exhibit. For one night in October, photographs and films from the Conservancy’s Archives were projected through Germantown Avenue storefront windows and onto exterior walls, with theatrically-lit architecture, live music, and interactive elements inviting visitors to share their own historical images and learn about area histories.

Several notable preservation and conservation successes included the protection of the historic houses at 717 Glengarry and 2 E. Chestnut Hill Avenue through designation to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places. A Conservation Easement was placed on a Springbank Street property, protecting sensitive Wissahickon Watershed land. The Conservancy worked with several groups of neighbors in Chestnut Hill and neighboring areas to protect community character as development pressures grow.

Assisting owners who have seen tax increases on their eased properties, the Conservancy has been fighting to demonstrate that this land should not be taxed as though it is developable. The Conservancy continues to advocate on behalf of eased-property owners to the City of Philadelphia that land protected by a conservation easement should not be taxed as “vacant” and waiting for future development, but instead as undevelopable land that is occupied with a conservation purpose.

A Conservancy-led collaborative Study was completed in the summer of 2017 to help prepare the community for the Upper Northwest District Plan in 2018 - one of the 18 District Plans created by the Planning Commission to guide Philadelphia’s physical development. The Conservancy served on the Plan’s Steering Committee to ensure that recommendations for zoning changes, tools, and investments support conservation, preservation and appropriate development in Chestnut Hill, Mt Airy and Germantown.

LOOKING BACK ON 12 MONTHS OF CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CHESTNUT HILL AREA

Leah Silverstein of the Conservancy, along with representatives from Natural Lands and the Neighborhood Garden Trust, gave a presentation on Urban Conservation work at the Pennsylvania Land Trust Association conference.

The Archives welcomed 93 researchers in-house, and responded to several hundreds of online and phone queries. The Conservancy added so many photos to its online collection (more than 10,000 in total!), that the organization had to invest in additional hosting. The Building Documentation Project was completed, ensuring that there is a photograph and information for every building in Chestnut Hill.

In September 2017, Friends of the Wissahickon (FOW) and the Chestnut Hill Conservancy unveiled “Hidden Histories of the Wissahickon,” a visual journey of the park and the watershed’s history in the FOW headquarters.

Hundreds enjoyed the sold out Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 Discovering Chestnut Hill Tour and Lecture Series. “The Italian Artisans Who Built Chestnut Hill”, featured three walking tours and a lecture/panel exploring where these craftsmen lived, where they worked, and what they built. The sold-out series offered a glimpse into these important aspects of the community’s history and legacy.

The Conservancy invited the Chestnut Hill Community Association to partner with us for the 3rd Annual Great Houses Tour, featuring six renovated historic homes hosted by the owners, designers and contractors responsible for their renovation. More than 300 visitors saw the many ways historic properties can be beautifully updated for modern living.

The Conservancy’s second “Open Space Showcase”was a big success, providing representatives from conservation organizations throughout the City a public forum to describe their work protecting valued open space in Philadelphia area watersheds. Presentations were given by representatives from Chestnut Hill Conservancy, FOW, and six other area land trusts.

Other programs included the Explorers’ Club for kids (with visits to the Morris Arboretum, Erdenheim Farm, and the Chestnut Hill Fire Station); Ask-the-Experts (top-notch designers and contractors describing chimney repair, interiors, knob-and-tube wiring, and rain gardens); behind-the-scenes tours of the Crefeld School’s Glass Studio and the First Troop Philadelphia Armory; and a lecture about Violet Oakley organized by the Woodmere Art Museum in honor of the Conservancy’s 50th Anniversary.
