Page 1: Looking back at your preliminary task

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?Editing, Continuity, Use of Mise-en-scene, Lighting, Using a camera, focusing, etc. Using editing programmes.

From my first preliminary task I’ve learnt to use more variety of shots rather than 1 or 2 but just repeated, so a variety such as long shots, mid shots, pov and extreme close ups. So I’ve found that more variety of shots makes the product more interesting for the audience. Also learnt the use of 180o rule so not to cross the line which was in both of the videos, but in the preliminary task one shot the character is more central than to one side. The rule helps to not confuse the audience by keeping one character to one side of the screen and the other to the other side so this helps to distinguish between the 2 characters. Also the head room is very important as we need to have as little room as possible so to focus the attention on one area and not away from the character and he action. This was a ok in my preliminary task as there wasn’t a lot but was still apparent. These mistakes in the preliminary tasks really helped me to improve the use of the camera on my behalf as I took all these critiques on board.

Lighting was very important in my opening sequence as we had to get a scary atmosphere to help bring the horror genre of the film to life, and the lighting in the opening sequence looked quite natural. Whereas in my preliminary task the lighting didn’t look very realistic so took away some of the realism in the piece. Editing of both pieces went quite well although some mistakes like a transition looking like time has passed when it was supposed to by straight after was one of the only editing mistakes of the preliminary task. Also in the preliminary task no effects were used, but in the opening sequence the use of black and white effects helps to show the 2 different times between shots. Also the transition of the opening credits helps to make it seem more professional. So in my opening sequence I explored more transitions and effects like blood splatters whereas in the preliminary task no effects were used. Also the help of retake available in the opening sequence helps to identify areas where mistakes were made or poor acting could be improved, in my opening sequence on shot looked as if the character was reading a script so a reshot was useful to make it look more realistic.
