When filming the pre lim task, my group and I thought that what we were filming was of a good enough standard. Even upon finishing the editing, we all thought that what we made didn’t need many improvements and was one of the best in the class. However , upon review from teachers and peers, there were problems exposed and there were improvements that could’ve been made to the preliminary task. One big problem exposed before completion was the 180 degree rule wasn’t followed and made the following of the shots confusing, however this was corrected in a reshooting before it was finally finished.

Upon an evaluation from peers, they noted that the sound quality was weakened as the dialogue was very quiet. In hindsight, we noted that was due to filming in a large open space being the school theatre. They also noted that the editing between shots in some instances was slightly jolted. Again upon hindsight this was due to not having enough shots.

The constructive criticism gained from people reviewing my preliminary task was a big help with seeing where to improve on thing s in the future and how to approach filming in the future.

Feedback from pre lim

When planning my Preliminary task, there was a good deal of thought in to aspects of it, such as story, characters and location, however there wasn’t enough planning done overall, and thus weakened the impact and the quality of the task. When my group and I were in the pre production stage, we realised that we had to put in a lot more time and effort in the planning of the main task, thus achieving an overall better result of quality. The aspects of filming and pre planning that were neglected in the preliminary task we made sure this time around was not neglected, these aspects being the dialogue spoken by the characters, the framing of the shots, editing techniques and when we filmed.

Planning

The preliminary task was only 1 minute long, meaning we didn’t need that many shots and the filming took hardly any time. When filming the Main product, it had to of lasted for 2 minutes. Obviously this meant we had to spend more time, meaning before we even started filming, we as a group had to plan our time efficiently to make sure that in the time we have, we can film good quality footage.

My group and I stuck to the filming schedule that we had, and fortunately there were no communication problems or other problems that could’ve slowed down the filming.

Thanks to excellent time management, we all went into the filming knowing what we were going film for that day, so there was no confusion amongst people involved, and also with time frame of filming, such as an hour or forty five minutes, so there was maturity and confidence whilst filming as we all knew that if we didn’t stick then we would’ve had to spend more days filming thus falling behind with the time frame set by our teacher, but fortunately we kept to the time and dates allocated and we ended up as a group being one of the first groups to be done with filming and ended up, in my opinion, being one of the most efficient groups.

Time management

When filming our preliminary task and when we showed our product off the first time, one thing that was noted was the positioning of the shots and the lack of variety of shots used.

When we filmed the main task again, we focused on having a variety shots, incorporating different angles and as many shots as possible, meaning in the editing stages we had a lot of choice over what was the most effective on for the scene

We also improved on the framing as we had a tendency to have the shot with a lot of blank space and the positioning of the characters wasn’t always the best. With the final product, we vastly improved on these by researching the framing of shots and how good framing in a movie looks like.

Acting on the comments gained from peer reviewers in the preliminary task. Editing was focused on, particularly how we could make things as close to the horror genre as possible, also in letting the shots with a good flow and without a jolting feeling.

As a group, we all had an input in the editing. This meant that the best editing was achieved as we could spot any mistakes and offer improvements and our ideas could be put in place in the editing of the product.

For the death scene, we used a 0.1 second long clip with an x-ray filter on it, paired with a sting, this made for an effective jump scare. In the police conversation portion of the title sequence, a jump cut to the victim’s hand on the floor was used to break up the shots. My group and I felt that these were effective in adding the ‘horror’ effect to our product.

Overall, I think the quality of the Main task is leaps and bounds ahead of the preliminary task. With the help from constructive criticism and more time and effort put into the final product, my group and I feel that we have made a very good title sequence which represents the horror genre effectively.
