Did you know that Pavilion A used to house theJewish General Hospital School of Nursing? Inoperation from 1951 to 1972, the School of Nursingprovided training to hundreds of nurses. Many ofthese nurses continue to work here today, includingDebbie Basevitz, Nurse Coordinator of the NeonatalFollow-up Clinic, Marsha Ptack, JGH NursingRecruitment Coordinator and Carla Strulovitch,Study Coordinator for Thrombosis Research.
"This was our home. We lived here, studied here andworked here. I felt very connected to the hospital,"says Debbie Basevitz, a graduate of the Class of1966. Whileshe start-ed out aspart of aclass of 42students ,
only 26 com-pleted the program, graduated and went on to work as nurses. In her thirdyear, she was a "big sister" – a role akin to preceptor – to Mona Kravitz,Associate Executive Director (Nursing) at the JGH.
The focus of the school was to combine high academic standards with hands-on experience. Because the students lived on campus, they were called toobserve interesting cases – no matter what time of day or night. Experienceddoctors and nurses taught classes, which were held throughout the year for afull three years (there were no summers off).
"The group of teachers that we had laid the groundwork that helped usbecome the nurses we are today," says Marsha Ptack, a graduate of the Classof 1965. "They were models of nursing."
In honour of Mother’s Day (May 11),here’s a special quote about mother-hood that’s dedicated to all of themothers and grandmothers at the JGH:
"I looked on child-rearing not only as awork of love and duty, but as a profes-sion that was fully as interesting andchallenging as any honourable profes-sion in the world, and one that demand-ed the best that I could bring it."

2 PULSE MAY/JUNE 2003
On May 12, 2003, the Jewish General Hospital willlaunch its most ambitious campaign in the hospital’sseventy-year history. The campaign demonstrates ourcombined determination to take the Jewish GeneralHospital to new levels of medical service, patient careand research. Emphasis will be focused on theComprehensive Cancer Centre Program, the Lady DavisInstitute for Medical Research expansion and theCardiovascular Sciences Centre.
The impressive campaign team, led by MortonBrownstein and Edward Wiltzer, is committed to raisingthe substantial dollars to ensure that the JGH continuesits proud tradition of medical care, not only today andtomorrow, but also for the long-term future. Our needsare many and diverse - the recruitment and retention oftop-notch medical professionals, additional and reno-
vated space, facilities andequipment and theexpansion of our overcrowded research facility. While the campaign goalsare ambitious, indeed, they accurately reflectthe real needs of a first
class medical institution in the 21st century.
The message is clear: our number one commitment atthe Jewish General Hospital is to provide patients withquality care that meets the highest standards. The gen-erosity of our donors, the commitment of our out-standing staff and the efforts of our many volunteerswill ensure that our goal is met.

Dr. Benjamin Burko definitely thinks so! This pediatrician andentrepreneur was the featured speaker for March’s LunchtimeLecture. He gave a fascinating account of how the busy pri-vate pediatric health clinic he owns and manages (Tiny TotsMedical Centre in Dollard-des-Ormeaux) changed its entiresystem, making for happier patients, happier staff and doc-tors… all courtesy of patient-friendly software! Dr. Burko, whois also an attending physician at the JGH, took the audiencethrough the steps involved in making his clinic’s service moreefficient… from recognizing the problems they faced, to find-ing creative solutions to these setbacks. Today, a majority ofappointments are booked online - by patients. Following the
example of thebanking indus-try, Dr. Burkodeveloped thes e l f - s e r v escheduling sys-tem, which setout to improvecustomer andstaff satisfac-tion whileattracting newcustomers and
reducing waiting time to get anappointment. In this informative andentertaining talk, Dr. Burko illustratedthe merits and motivators of gettingcustomers to use "Self-ServeScheduling" on-line.The Luchtime Lecture Series consists offree, monthly lectures open to staff, volunteers, patients and visitors. Bringyour lunch and bring a friend!
Happy Patients Is Technology the Answer?

Announcements& Achievements
Congratulations to the JGH TechnicalServices team, who won first prize for excel-lence in efficient energy management at aconference given by the Association deshôpitaux du Québec (AHQ) and the Agencede l’éfficacité énergétique du Québec. Theaward was in recognition of their energy effi-ciency projects, which saved the hospitalmore than $7 million over the past nine years. Since 1993, the hospital has implementedseveral energy-saving initiatives, includingwhat they call the "Heat Recovery Project."The project aims to recover hot gases exitingthe steam boilers that are otherwise lostthrough the hospital chimney. "Free" hotwater is generated from the recovered gases. The hot water is used for such purposes assupplying the hospital's domestic hot water,pre-heating of outside air for ventilation pur-poses, supplying the hot water necessary towash 4,836,000 pounds of linen per year andfor perimeter heating through the radiatorsin pavilions A, B, C, D. "The Ministry of Health and Social Serviceswill be using the JGH’s energy efficiencymanagement as an example for other hospi-tals," said Philippe Castiel, Coordinator ofPlant Operations and Maintenance. "Ourideas will definitely be shared to benefit thehealth sector in Quebec."Between this project and many other energy-saving initiatives, the JGH saved millions ofdollars - the equivalent of taking 10,000 carsoff the road - even in advance of the Kyotoprotocol!
JGH WinsFirst Prize for EnergyEfficiency

JGH School of Nursing continued from page 1
According to Debbie, the concept of teamnursing meant that everyone worked coop-eratively and it was easier to get to knowall of the patients. Nursing assistants alsoplayed a crucial role as part of the team."We always felt that we had support fromeach other," she recalls.
In addition to changes in the way in whichnursing is practiced, Debbie noted that therehave been many changes to the hospital’sinfrastructure. For example, the park-ing lot used to be a farm. The parkinglot behind Pavilion A also used to con-tain a swimming pool and tenniscourts.
Pavilion A itself has changed consid-erably. Today, it mostly houses officesand clinics. Marsha’s office today ison the eighth floor of this pavilion –she suspects that it could have beenher old dorm room!
Back when it was home to the Schoolof Nursing, Pavilion A was a prettyinteresting place. For example, medical interns and resi-dents lived on the second floor. In the earlier years, Marshasaid, nursing students were not allowed to stop the eleva-tors on the first floor.
Carla Strulovitch noted that later, there were "datingrooms" on the second floor, where nursing students couldbring their dates. Of course, the rooms had glass doors, which were always open. The residence had a House
Mother who ensured that all the studentsabided by the rules.
When asked why they never leftthe JGH to work somewhereelse, their answers were similar.
"I just feel so at home here,"says Carla. "I never had a needto leave. Why leave somethingyou’re so happy about? Iwouldn’t trade it for any otherexperience."
Marsha echoes this sentiment:"We’re still here. That speaksfor itself."
"I’m still satisfied and believe that I made the right careerchoice," concludes Debbie, who always took pride in heraccomplishments as a nurse.
Debbie, Marsha and Carla are only a few of the JGH nurs-ing graduates still working at the hospital today.Although we could not interview them all, here is a list ofsome of the others still working at the JGH. We hope wedid not exclude any names, but please let us know if we
did!
