Dear Church Family,
After God’s servant Moses died, God raised up Joshua to assume leadership and guide God’s people in their move into the Promised Land. Joshua 1:10-11 says, “And Joshua commanded the officers of the people, ‘Pass through the midst of the camp and command the people, ‘Prepare your provisions, for within three days you are to pass over this Jordan to go in to take possession of the land that the Lord your God is giving you to possess.’”
I know how to move stuff. Back in my seminary days, in addition to attending graduate school full-time and serving part-time on a church staff, I worked two glamorous part-time jobs, loading and unloading freight. I moved boxes, lots of them; some very big and some small. But I moved boxes. In the wee hours of the night I loaded and unloaded semitrailers for UPS, and after school, I worked for Montgomery Ward department store, loading trailers full of re-frigerators, freezers, lawn tractors and other things. Getting things loaded up properly and moved out in a timely manner was key for the companies I worked for to make a profit. At UPS, we were required to load trailers at 1,200 boxes/per hour. Every weekday, three - four hours a day, I loaded three - four semitrailers worth of boxes. There is much about those days that I don’t miss. But I did enjoy the satisfaction of seeing things loaded up and moved out.
Within a few short months our church family will move from our existing church building to our new church building. It has been an awesome journey, full of God’s blessings. I have seen lots of grapes over these many months. And they’re still coming, in giant bunches. God has been supremely good and faithful to us. His people have responded with great love, joyful and sacrificial giving, and no small amount of sweat equity at the job site. It has been a blessed journey, and I love you all the more for sharing this journey together.
But the fact remains, we’re moving. So what are some things to remember as we consider this big step in our jour-ney?
1. Don’t forget what this is all about.
This vision for this journey has never been about building a building, just for the sake of a building. It’s always been about making room for a growing family, increasing our capacity to reach more people for the Jesus Christ, and mo-bilizing God’s people for ministry and missions, locally and around the world. That’s God’s vision for our church fam-ily, and our new building will be a wonderful tool that God will use to help us accomplish these things for His glory.
The best ways to prepare for a a physical move is to remain committed to the spiritual vision that God has for us. What are we going to do when we get into the new building? Well, for one thing, we going to worship Jesus Christ with all of our hearts, and we’ll get to do that together. The best way to prepare for that is to worship Jesus Christ with all of our hearts each week until then so that we only continue to do what we should be doing.
When we get into our new building we’re going to look for ways to help hurting people, invite friends to join us at church, share the Gospel with everyone we can, and grow together in Christ through our small groups and opportuni-ties for service. The best way to do that in the future is to continue to do all of it now. Be faithful to God. Invite people to come to church and small group with you. Do what God calls you to do.
2. Find a way to jump in and help along the way.
Many hands make light work. That’s not a Bible verse but it is a fact of life. And so very often in the Bible, espe-cially in building and moving projects, part of their success was found in everyone jumping in and doing their part. Over the next few weeks you’ll be hearing about opportunities for you to help. We’ll have several teams in charge of lots of things: the big move with all of its pieces, cleaning up both the old and new buildings, setting up the kitchen, putting the furniture in the Worship Center, etc. There will be lots of things and we’ll need lots of help along the way. Please do your very best to find a way to jump in and help out.
3. Choose to be flexible, not miserable.
For those of you who have joined us on mission trips here in the US and around the world, you know that one key to godly success on a mission trip is to choose to be flexible, not miserable. Every journey has its challenges and oppor-tunities. I’m certain that we’ll face a few more of these along the way. One of the best things that all of us can do to help make these final steps successful is to choose to be flexible. Attitude is everything. We have everything to be grateful for, and nothing to complain about. Let’s worship God and help each other by remaining joyful, flexible, and helpful along the way.
I’ll continue to do my very best to lead us well and help us stay informed along the way. Be on the lookout soon for official announcements about our upcoming Prayer and Dedication Service and our Grand Opening Celebration. It’s coming soon. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to let me know. I love you all very much. I am grateful to be your pastor. And I see grapes everywhere. Pastor Jonathan

September GROWTH CLASSES
On Sunday, September 7, from 5:00-6:30 PM, our fall trimester of Growth Classes will begin. The following four courses
will be offered (Note that the study of “Humility” is on Wednesday evenings beginning October 1)
Women’s Ministry Study: Children of the Day (Book cost $16) Join Beth Moore and walk the shores of Thessalonica
with this verse-by-verse Bible study of 1 and 2 Thessalonians. During this nine week study, you'll learn how to let go
of past mistakes and discover your circumstances are not coincidental - God's timing is impeccable! Whether you're
facing family crisis, medical diagnoses, relationship troubles, doubts, or fears, you'll come away encouraged that
even though it may not feel that way, you are exactly where Christ wants you to be! "You are children of the light
and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness" (1 Thessalonians 5:5).
Christian Beliefs: Twenty Basics Every Christian Should Know, Part III (Led by Dirk Miller. Book cost $12; Open to
new students—no prerequisite) God doesn't call every Christian to go off to seminary, but there are certain matters
of doctrine—that is, the church's teaching—that every Christian simply must know. Theology is important because
what we believe affects how we live. If you're a relatively new believer in Jesus, or if you're a more mature Chris-
tian looking for a quick brush-up on basics of the faith, “Christian Beliefs” is for you.
Give Them Grace: Dazzling Your Kids with the Love of Jesus (Led by Travis and Mitzi Peterson. Book cost $10)
How are parents to raise children so they don’t become Pharisees (legalists) or prodigals (rebels)? It’s all about
grace-filled, gospel-driven parenting. Christian parents, in their desire to raise godly children, can drift toward rule-
centered discipline. There is, however, a far more effective method—a grace-motivated approach that begins with
the glorious truth of God’s love for sinners. In “Give Them Grace”, parents will learn how to connect the benefits of
the cross—especially regeneration, adoption, and justification—to their children’s daily lives. Topics also addressed
include our inability to follow the law perfectly, God’s forgiveness and love displayed at the cross, what true heart
obedience looks like, discipline, dealing with popular culture, and evangelism as a way of life. We want parents to
find this class a great resource for raising grace-filled, Jesus-loving kids.
Humility: True Greatness (Led by Jonathan Peters. Book cost $12; meets Wednesday evenings at 6:30 beginning
October 1) A battle rages within every one of us every day. It’s the clash between our sense of stubborn self-
sufficiency and God’s call to recognize that we’re really nothing without Him. It’s pride versus humility. And it’s a
fight we can’t win without looking repeatedly to Christ and the cross. We must daily, diligently, and deliberately
weaken our greatest enemy (pride) and cultivate our greatest friend (humility). This thorough examination clarifies
misconceptions, revealing the truth about why God detests pride and turns His active attention to the humble. Be-
cause pride is never passive, defeating it demands an intentional attack. The blessing that follows is God’s abundant
favor.
Note: It is important that you sign up for these courses soon so that we can order course materials for all participants.

Dear Church Family,
I pray that each of you reading this had a wonderful summer. God has been great this
summer! In June we had Vacation Bible School and 95 different kids came with an average
attendance of 83. We had 3 children who prayed to make Jesus Lord of their lives! It was
awesome to hear the kids quoting the Bible verse and excited about learning God’s word.
Then the first week of July, I took 14 kids to camp in Bolivar, Missouri at Southwest
Baptist University. We had a great week. The theme of the week was “Reset: God Redeems”.
Once again God was at work at camp when one child asked Jesus to be Lord of his life. Then the
day we got back from camp, another child was talking with his mom about what he learned and
also prayed to ask Jesus be Lord of his life.
The children continued to learn to glorify God at the end of July during Fine Arts Camp.
We had 26 children participate in different classes consisting of cooking, sewing, woodwork,
drama, cupcake decorating, scripture art, and jewelry. The children learned to use their gifts and
new skills to bring glory to God. The first day they learned God is creator and created things
beautiful. The second day they learned people sinned – making the world ugly. The third day the
children learned God sent His son Jesus to make things beautiful by getting rid of our sin on the
cross. The last day the kids learned that God wants them to use their gifts and talents for Him.
On Friday August 8th, we had a Back to School party. I was worried it was going to rain,
but God held it off and allowed us to have lots of fun on the parking lot! We had a bounce house,
an inflatable obstacle run, youth praise band, and snacks. We had over 100 people attend and
several that stayed for the movie. Thanks to all who came and helped out. ,
It is hard to believe school is back in session and fall is right around the corner. I was in
Minnesota this last week (August 26th – September 1st) and the trees up there were already
beginning to change colors. I had a great time with my dad and mom visiting family. We were able
to go to the North Shore (Duluth, MN) and to Gooseberry Falls. It was amazing to see God’s
creation and beauty! I rode up with my dad on the back of his motorcycle and on the way home we
rode along the Mississippi River with bluffs on one side and the river on the other. It was
gorgeous! I am thankful to be back home and ready for our Fall Ministries to begin.
On, September 3rd, Hiz Kidz Choir will begin for children 4 years old through 5th grade. It
meets from 6:30 – 7:30. Then on September 7th, the Hiz Kidz Small Group classes will promote on
Sunday morning and AWANA begin
(3 years old through 5th grade) that
evening from 5:00 – 6:30. As always I am
excited to see children learn about God
and eager to watch them grow this coming
year. It will be a big year for us as we will
relocate to a new building. I know God will
use that to bring glory to His name!
Joyfully Serving Him,
Jenny Auld

“Be you, Bravely” is designed to help us focus
on making the choices that could create the
most good in our lives, help us to step into
healthy risk and to do it in the context of
community where we can cheer one another on.
It takes courage to ask brave questions and even
more courage to search for the answers.

Heart for God Student Ministry
In my last letter I had hoped you had been praying for us and I know you have!! Thank you for your support and
prayers. It has been a busy Summer and I think a productive one.
You will be hearing from the Mission teams in the upcoming weeks as they share their experience in morning wor-ship. However, if you would like to see some video from their trips, go to http://heartforgod.us/ You can then select media gallery and the videos from this Summer and past Summers are there for you. Enjoy! There are some that will
bring back great memories. There is also a dedication to Mark Warnock from our students.
We are negotiating with the CAC to begin working on a bi-monthly basis with them. I am looking forward to get
back there and enjoy the ministry.
This past Sunday we showed the movie God's not Dead. It was a very good experience and challenged our students to think and how they might defend what they believe. We had a good discussion at the end of the movie. And then I got the bucket challenge. I am still cold just thinking about it. For your laughter: https://www.facebook.com/
photo.php?v=738270019573491&set=o.85468124568&type=2&theater
Do you help your students prioritize their lives? As they get older and you throw in a job, school, extracurricular activities, on top of all they are currently doing, they are stressed. How can you help them? They are pressured at work to work a certain schedule and if they are good, they'll get lots or hours, money and they will like it. However, what happens to everything else? School and all the extracurricular activities come along with pressure from coaches, band leaders, grades, parents and your poor student tries to come up with 30 hours in a day. I can tell you what gets
cut after 22 years working with students. Church activities because there seems to be no penalty there.
The reasoning goes, everyone at church will still love me and there is no down side. The gorilla in the room is that you have just thrown away what you claimed to love because the one you love will understand. Think of the impact of making that type of choice at an early age. It has impact on life and especially your spiritual life. If we claim to know Christ as Lord and Savior, He should be the priority and everything else will need to be worked out. I am not saying that every single thing we do at youth group/church takes priority over everything else, what I am saying is help your student reason through their schedule and see that they can't do it all. If God is at the bottom of the list, then there is a different problem to work through. My suggestion is: God, family, school, and work, I think would be a good place to start. Glad to help as I have had experience over the years balancing it out. Sometimes a good witness to a school,
sports event or any activity is to say no, not on this day. In the scheme of eternity, what really counts?
Here is what is coming up:
Sept 6, Paintball, $25, leave church at 9am or meet us at Wacky Warrior at 9:30pm, bring a friend
Sept 8, McD`s Proverbs before school, 7am at Columbia McD's, I will buy breakfast for the first one, take
Columbia students to school, Middle school and high school are welcome
Sept 9, 6pm at the MC dinner together for high school seniors and college age folks up to 24 (I will not check
ID :)) Meet about starting a Missional community group
Sept 13, Metter Park United Christians Everywhere (UCE) will be doing a concert in the park with food, etc for the whole family, local Christian bands will be playing and our own Student Worship Team around 2pm FB
group: https://www.facebook.com/UnitingChristiansEverywhere
Sept 24, 7am at the Flag pole of your school the international See You at the Pole prayer time for the school year, nation, world friends etc. That night our student worship team will be leading a student SYATP rally in
Alton at Calvary Baptist Church
Oct 31 to Nov 1, Fall Retreat with Phil Nelson cost $35
As with all that we do, never let money get in the way of your student attending. I have a budget and know folks willing to sponsor students. So sign up and come, just let me know your need. Also, if you come as a sponsor for the students, student ministry will pay your way (many come and pay their own, but we are willing to take care of you so you can love on students). If you are so led, feel free to sponsor a student to camp. The local YMCA has sponsored a
student to camp this year. Please contact me and I will let you know the need.
Pray for us as we follow what the Lord has prepared for us. I am blessed and privileged to work with our students.

One Sunday a stay at home mom brought her 3 year old child to church, and because the child
had never been separated from her mom she refused to go to the nursery. The following Sunday when
the mom and her child came to church, the mom decided to try the nursery again. The nursery worker
informed the mom that if she cried for too long she would get the mom.
Well the child cried and cried, but the whole time the child was crying, the nursery worker held
the child on her lap, holding her, and making the child feel safe. The child continued to cry so the
nursery worker called for the mom, and the mom came and picked up her child and took her child to
church with her. As the child was sitting on the mom’s lap, she turned to her mom and said I want to
go back and see my friend. The mom instantly knew that her child was speaking about the nursery
worker. The mom left the service and took her child back down to the nursery. The nursery worker
greeted the child with a warm smile. That was the beginning of a wonderful and meaningful relation-
ship for both the child and the child’s mother.
To all the nursery workers out there, sometimes you don’t even need to say anything to the child;
you just need to love them where they are at, even if all the child does is cry, you just never know
when you are making a difference.
We Need You!
Please pray and consider serving in the church nursery. If you feel God leading you to help, or
would like more information, please contact our Children’s Ministry Director, Jenny Auld at 636

Thank You! We really appreciate your willingness to serve!

New Building – New Schedule
As we look forward with great anticipation to what God will do with FBC Columbia in
our new location, we need to begin getting our minds adjusted to some of the changes that
will necessarily accompany a move. One such change is a brand new schedule of Sunday
morning events.
Sunday Morning Schedule:
8:15 am - 9:15 am – Adult Small Groups.
9:30 am - 10:45 am – Worship service in the Worship Center,
Hiz Kidz – Preschool Worship (Birth through Pre-Kindergarten) in
Preschool area
Hiz Kidz—Growing in Worship (Kindergarten) in Children’s
area
Hiz Kidz – Growing in Worship (1st through 3rd grades)
released midway during worship to Children’s area
11:00 am -12:00 pm – Small groups for all ages
As you can see from the above schedule, our Sunday mornings will be shaped a bit
differently than they are at present. Sunday mornings will include an hour of adult small
groups at 8:15 am. During this hour, there will be no children’s or student activities, and there
will not be a nursery provided. Several of our adult groups who do not have younger children
still at home have chosen to participate in this earlier hour which will help us best utilize our
new space.
From 9:30 am to 10:45 am, we will gather together as a church family for our worship
service. During the worship service, expect the same type of activities that you normally
experience during our worship services. We will worship God through praying, singing, giv-
ing, and hearing God’s Word preached. We will offer Hiz Kidz – Preschool Worship for chil-
dren kindergarten and younger. We will also continue to offer our Hiz Kidz – Growing in
Worship program for kids in grades 1-3.
Then, from 11:00-12:00, we will have our later hour of small groups, this time for all
ages. Children’s and adult small groups will meet in our main building while students will
meet in rooms in the ministry center.
Please join with your pastoral staff in praying that God will bless the work he does in
our church as we move into a new building and adopt this new schedule. If you have any
questions, please let us know.

A Mission Trip? By Mark Laxton
I was recently asked to write about my experi-
ence at the Chenzhou Orphanage. For those that
do not know, our church has a partnership with the
orphanage there. My wife, Shannon sometimes
gets asked if her trips there are really mission
trips?. We sometimes think if you are not able to
physically speak and share the Gospel that it is not
really a mission trip. I would like to share what I
saw and why I can tell you with confidence that
these truly are mission trips. The following are the
ways I have seen God working there.
James 1:27 says “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after
orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” This is a
very straight forward command that we are to take care of these children. When I walked into the
older children rooms it was emotionally very tough. There were around thirty children that basically
attacked us when we walked in the room. They all just wanted to hold our hand, be held, and feel
physically close to someone. This experience alone validates why we go. I was drawn to the kids sitting
in the corner that were physically unable to walk to us. I would sit with them and hold their hands and
their smiles would light up the room. Some items that our church has helped buy and donate to make
their lives a little better are: air conditioning, playground equipment, formula, desks, chairs, and
sending children to special schools. We are called to help these children that cannot help themselves.
Some other verses on orphans: Isaiah 1:17, Psalm 68:5, Psalm 82:3-4
We may not physically be able to speak the Gospel to them but God can open doors that we cannot see
coming. The group always goes to the Christian Chinese Church even though they cannot understand a
word but still enjoy the worship time together. Last time many of the nannies from the orphanage
wanted to go with the group. I believe they could see God’s love in these volunteers and wanted to see
what they had. Guess what? They were able to hear the Gospel in Mandarin. This last trip we took
our translator to the church and he heard the Gospel. If you serve, God will take care of sharing.
Through this partnership, my wonderful wife has advocated for many children with her network of
friends, adoption groups, and family. We know of five children that have been adopted into their for-
ever homes from Shannon sharing their stories after meeting them on these trips. All five of these
families are Christians and are sharing the Gospel with their new children.
Lastly, we met our last two children from visiting this orphanage. We are eternally grateful that God
has used these trips to introduce us to them. I can assure you we will be sharing God’s saving grace
with them.
I am proud of our church for partnering with this orphanage and doing the hard work of sharing God’s grace
with people that don’t even speak our language. After being there, I can testify God is moving in China!
Lastly, I would encourage anyone to go and see how God can use you and more importantly how he will change
your life. One word of warning! You may end up with seven kids!

Dear FBCC Family,
Thank you for the recent mission
team you sent to minister with us in
Brazil. We were completely over-
whelmed by all the items that you sent
to us. In addition, we had a truly
blessed experience sharing our minis-
try with the team. They were such an
encouragement to us! We are so
grateful for your friendship and con-
tinued prayers. Our sovereign Lord
listens to you as He fulfills His will
here in Brazil!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
