THE DAY OF THE DEPARTED SOULS
Every year in the month of November we remember the departed souls. For us Catholics, we do
not just remember the departed souls or the dead but we pray for them. We are grateful to all
those who lived among us and are no more with us today. Prayer for the departed souls is one of the
hallmarks of our faith. From its beginning, the Church has offered prayers for the dead, above all the
Mass. Prayer for the dead, is motivated by resurrection of Jesus and then, believe in our resurrection
after our death. If we do not believe that the dead will rise, if we do not have hope in the eternal
reward, such prayer has no purpose. Our prayers for those who have died are the sign of faith and
are an expression or sign of our close relationship or bond that connects us with them even after
death. They are an expression of our faith that death cannot break the spiritual relationship we
establish with our brothers and sisters at the time of baptism. All the faithful departed are still
spiritually living with us. Since our communion with them is essentially spiritual, we express it by
praying for them and offering the Eucharistic Sacrifice for their repose and purification. Our prayers
and Eucharistic Sacrifices are signs that we have not forgotten the love and service of our departed
brothers and sisters when they were with us, and we are united with them with an unbroken bond. At
the same time our prayers and Eucharistic Sacrifices are the best ways of showing our love and
gratitude towards them. They are no more with us physically, but the love and service we received
from them lives forever in our hearts. Besides praying for their eternal repose, it also should generate
in us thoughts about our own death. The church reminds us that when we die, we too, like the faithful
departed, shall complete the process of dying with Christ and rising to new life begun at baptism.
This reflection makes us realize that this world is not our permanent home, and our earthly life is a
pilgrimage to God.
Though death is common to everyone we should live like a candle. Always enlightening the world
around it, helping others overcome the fear of darkness, making its every moment dedicated to
others, without caring for itself and fearless of the dark (death). Sometimes some of us are really
afraid of death and wonder if we will be able to fulfill all our dreams in life. Nobody really wants to
die. Of course it can be very scary, because as humans we don’t know for certain what happens
after death. Therefore, to fulfill our dreams of life before death what you could do right now is
making a list of things that we really want to do, look at it and making the first approach of how to get
them accomplished one by one. Some may be an easy goal some may be medium and more
challenging. Let us feel free to dream and if we really want to make it come true - be committed. Set
a goal date on each of them. Be realistic about them and we could review them from time to time,
add more dreams or even erase some of them that we don’t feel like doing it any more. After all, it
is our dreams, our life. Go for it. Whatever we want our tomorrow to be - do it today. Whatever we
want after our life (next life) to be, do it now. It will be really beneficial to the society and more
rewarding in life after death. We will be remembered forever.

After a month of community experience, all of us were back on 3rd
September. The next two days were spent in cleaning up the campus which
was full of grass. On 7th September we had an evaluation of our community
experience. From 8th September we began the regular classes.
On 12th September there was a gathering of MTC students and the staff at our
place. We played friendly football match too. It was quite an interesting match.
Both the teams played well. The heading, the defense and the cheering of MTC
students were praiseworthy. However our passes and finish were better and we
won the match by 2-0 goals. After the match there was refreshment for all. By
6.30 pm they went back.
We had monthly recollection on 26th Sept. It was animated by Fr. Jeevan, sj, one
of the Tertians. The theme of the recollection was, ‘Arise and Awaken the World’,
based on the Apostolic Letter of Pope Francis to all the consecrated people. We
were given points for prayer and reflection at the end of the input. In the words
of Pope Francis we were exhorted to look to the past with gratitude, live the
present with passion and embrace the future with hope. We were moved, inspired
and touched by the input.
Bro. Mariannan, the Provincial of Trichy, visited us on 2nd Oct. We were thrilled
at his arrival. He interacted with us on 3rd morning. He shared about Trichy
Province and their mission sectors outside India. We welcomed him with a special
prayer service and a short cultural programme in the evening. This being the tri-
centenary year of our foundation we staged a skit on the founding of our
congregation besides other programmes. In his message Bro. Mariannan said,
“The prayer service, the back-drop and the cultural programme were well
prepared and presented. I liked it very much. I thank you for your prayers for my
Province and for me. During the novitiate you have to lay a strong foundation for
your spiritual life. If the foundation is weak no edifice can be built on it. As life
is not a bed of roses you have to learn to accept certain unpleasant things of life
also. I appreciate the members of the staff for taking so much trouble to form
you as the future pillars of our congregation.” On 4th Oct he left for Konbir-
Noatoli to meet his batch mate, Bro Sushil Toppo.
On 4th October two of our companions – Dhanraj Surseh Kumar (H) and Vincent
Amalraj (D) – had to leave the novitiate for their misconduct. They have reached
home safely. Now we are only 15 novices.

INCREDIBLE iNDIA
PRATYASHA
The Month of October was very hot. The farmers were frantically waiting for rains. The
upland paddy got dried up and so the people allowed it to be grazed by animals. It is a
season for all kinds of vegetables. The people had cultivated large areas but at the end when it
was ready for harvesting the hailstorm destroyed it. It was a big catastrophe. I too had planted
different types of vegetables for own use. But on the last night of the month unusual heavy
hailstorm engulfed them. God gave andHe took away. Let his name be praised. I have no
power over the nature.
Pratyasha has contacted 4 new villages in the interior places. We are conducting several meetings
with the villagers to make them aware who is responsible for the present wretched situation. In
all these villages we found the basic amenities are lacking. In three villages the people have to
go half a kilometer to fetch water. One hamlet has no electricity or approach road. They all fall
under the category of Below Poverty Line. The government programmes are given once they
are enrolled in this category. Our two point programme is to enroll all the children of these
villages to school and a survey to present before the gov. that they are entitled for BPL Number.
We are making them aware that their rights are denied, hence a need to demand for their
rights.
