Playing an organ with hands and feet Youth and adults attended the annual Pedals, Pipes, and Pizza event this spring. The
tour had a stop at First United Methodist Church for a hands-on opportunity with
their organ and an introduction to
the assorted pipe sizes and sounds
of a pipe organ. The second tour
stop was to The Lutheran Church of
the Good Shepherd in Lakeside
where there was an opportunity to
squeeze into the space where the
pipes are, tryout pedal boards, learn
organ terminology, be introduced
to the history of organs, and listen
to a student recital. Early organs
were for adding sound to battles
and had no connection to churches.

Duluth’s short summer is ahead filled with
opportunities. My oh my the winter didn’t want to leave.
Snow in May—twice?!! Warmer days and summer
events are ahead. Grandma’s Marathon, garage
sales, movies in the park, outdoor concerts,
summertime birds, outdoor
sports, and gardening. Maybe
a wandering bear will visit. Some people will head to cabins, have out of town
visitors, spend time on our waterways, mow lawns, have
a campfire, and watch the colors of the sky change in

Or, why not take a nap?
The rhubarb season is upon us. The rhubarb in our yard seems to have larger leaves each year. In the past, I’ve
been Rhubarbara (go to the Chum Rhubarb Fest to
meet ‘her’ and enjoy rhubarb made into many
food items).
This spring I went on the Pedals, Pipes and Pizza Tour.
Learn more about it on the front page and page 5. I’ve
also been learning clogging.

Some people learn languages on their own for fun or preparation to travel. Plenty of Duluth students
are learning German you can read about that here. We are planning
to host a delegate from Japan with the Sister Cities exchange but I don’t know how far we will
get learning Japanese! Your neighbor, Wendy

Organs are wind instruments. Pipes are sounded when a
stop is turned on, and a key pressed, allowing wind into
the pipes. About a dozen churches in Duluth have organs
with pipe counts of >1,000 pipes. Pipe sizes vary from
pencil size to 32’ log size. Some pipes are made of tin
and rounded; some are square and made of wood.
Multiple pipes sound to create overtones and complex
mixtures. A skilled organist has the flue pipes whistling
and reed pipe vibrating playing old and new music pieces.
development of
young organists.
Applications are due
by July 15. Auditions
take place later in the
summer. Five to
seven scholarships
are granted each year.
Call 879-3456 for
more information.
Several past grant
recipients have gone
on to study music.
Many of the Guild
students play at local
churches as substitutes and
some serve as the primary
church organist.
Participants on the organ tour stopped at the
Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd and were able
to try their feet on an organ pedal board. Organists use
special shoes with heels to better reach the pedals and
keep their feet in good shape. The participants also
accessed the confined space where the church pipes
were hand-fitted specific to the church and its space.
The organ is referred to as “The King of Instruments”

Students Learn German in the classroom and beyond
At Ordean East and East ~340 students are learning German.
The district offers levels 1-5, with 5 being a College in the
Schools class in conjunction with UMD. Students learn the
language in a communicative setting while also learning about
German culture, foods, and festivals, etc. Some students travel
every year to the Minnesota Zoo to participate in German Day
at the Zoo. Upper level students give
presentations and compete against
students from all over Minnesota
while the younger students watch
these presentations in German. A stop is also made at a
German restaurant to enjoy traditional German food. East
students may also take part in the GAPP exchange program.
GAPP is the German-American Partnership Program, which
supports high school exchange programs. We travel every
other summer to Germany for three weeks to travel and live
with (and go to school with) host partners. The German
students come stay with us in September.
Try out the recipe on the back page. It’s a favorite German
recipe for a delicious soup made with spring-time asparagus.
Duluth Public Schools also have Ojibwe and Spanish immersion
programs. Thank you to Emily Hull for information.

Spargelsuppe (German)
Creamy White Asparagus Soup White asparagus is so loved in Europe in the spring that
it’s a cause for celebration. White asparagus is milder in
flavor, more tender and grows underground. (Or, use
our local asparagus.) 1/2 cup onion (chopped)
2 T. butter
2 pounds white asparagus (peeled and
cut into 2” pieces, heads reserved)
6 cups broth (chicken or vegetable
1/2 cup half-and-half
Salt to taste
Fresh ground pepper (to taste)
Dry white wine (to taste)
Garnish with Parsley
1. Saute onion in butter until soft in a 4-quart saucepan 2. Add pieces of asparagus (minus the heads) and
steam for 5 minutes 3. Add the broth and boil gently for about 30 minutes
or until asparagus is very soft 4. Puree the soup in batches in the blender and return
the soup to the pan. 5. Bring the soup to a simmer and add the reserved
asparagus heads. 6. Cook at least 5 minutes or until asparagus heads are
fork-tender.
7. Turn down the heat. Add half-and-half. Do not boil.
8. Taste and add salt, and pepper as needed.
Add a few spoonfuls of white wine if you think the soup
needs acidity. Garnish with parsley. Credit: The spruceeats.com
Duluth’s first pumphouse, where water from
Lake Superior was piped in and sent on to early
residents of Duluth, was built in 1890 at 5802
London Rd. Its life as a pumphouse ended as
people realized the water too close to town was not
as clean as water further up the shore. The
Lakewood Pump Station was built in 1896 and
replaced this one. [In 2013 the Look at Lakeside
newsletter arranged a tour of the Lakewood Pump
House and we learned about the process of
preparing Duluth’s water supply.]
In 1937 the London Road building was turned into
a home. Tour the home as part of the Duluth
Women’s Club Home and Garden Tour on July 17.
Register by calling 724-3168. Lunch at the historic
Women’s Club (building built in 1910) is included.
