Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal
As part of our commitment to Personal Development,Longsands will be supporting the Royal British LegionPoppy Appeal.
From Wednesday 21 October until Friday 23 October,we will be making poppies available for students to buyin a Covid-secure manner. Poppies will be taken to eachform group during tutor times so that your contributionscan be placed directly into the collection boxes (please note thatchange will not be available so only bring in the amount you wouldlike to donate).
There will be further opportunities to buy a poppy, again during tutor time, when we return from our half term break. During the week of 9 November our ‘Great Conversations’ Assembly will be focussed on why Remembrance is significant. Students can wear their poppies in the lead up to Remembrance Day on 11th November.
Thank you in anticipation of your support for this cause.

60th Anniversary Logo Winner
During the summer term a competition was held to design a logo for the Academy’s 60th
anniversary.
Matylda created a striking design which is a fusion of a former Longsands logo and our current design. The logo, which features a bold ‘60’, will be a feature for the many events and activities being held throughout this academic year to mark this momentous year.
Well done Matylda, you should be very proud of your winning design.

Longsands Talks: Medical Screening
Topic: Longsands Talks: Medical Screening (Dr Modi)Time: Oct 20, 2020 06:00 PM London
Interested Sixth Form students have been invited to the first in our series of talks this year. Our first talk is by Dr Modi who is a local GP who is also conducting research at the University of Cambridge. He is going to speak about his research at the University of Cambridge into screening as well as medical screening more generally.
This will take place from 6-7 on Tuesday 20th October. There will be a chance for you to ask any questions at the end but if you wish to submit a question beforehand please feel free to email me and I will forward your query on to Dr Modi. If you wish to have your camera on that is your choice but we do ask that you keep your mic off during the talk unless you are asking a question.
Students in lower years who would like to attend the zoom meeting should email Mrs Sparrow for further details via [email protected]

Did you know…A Supercomputer based at the University of Manchester is the World’s Fastest Brain-Mimicking Machine.
SpiNNaker is unique in that it doesn’t just ‘think’ like a brain. It creates models of the neurons in human brains, and then simulates more neurons in real time more than any other computer on Earth.
SpiNaker’s primary task is to support research work on partial brain models: for example, models of the cortex, of basal ganglia, or multiple regions of the brain that work as networks of firing neurons.
The Supercomputer uses one million processors and 1,200 interconnected circuit boards in order to mimic human brain function for neural network engineering projects.

What is Black History Month…Black History Month aims to acknowledge the presence and contributions that people from Africa and the Caribbean backgrounds have made to the UK. Black people have made an immense contribution to the country’s history. It is an important inclusion particularly as most of this history is not taught in schools or even widely known.

H SEPTIMIUS SEVERUSC. 145-211 AD1. This emperor was born in modern-day Libya from African descent
2. He was chosen to be emperor by his troops at the legionary fortress in Carnuntum (modern day Austria) in AD193
3. He was descended via his father’s side from the Phoenicians who settled in Africa in the 9th Century CB.
4. He came from a wealthy and was sent to Rome at 18. He rose to the highest political office in Rome – Consul in AD190. Race and colour were clearly not a problem in ancient Rome.
5. When Emperor Commodus was assassinated in 192, he seized his chance and marched from Hungary to Austria and claimed imperial power for himself in 193.
6. It took 4 years of fighting, before a major battle in Lugdunum(Lyon) when he could declare himself emperor of Rome (others were claiming they were also emperor before this).
7. He arrived in Britannia in AD208 and was welcomed as a saviourfrom the Gauls and Germans who continually came over to Britain and pillaged.
8. In Britain he repaired and upgraded Hadrian’s Wall
9. He died in York and was buried in Rome in Hadrian’s mausoleum.
10. On his death bed he gave advice to his son – “Be good to one another, enrich the soldiers, and damn the rest.”

H John Blanke - Late 15th to 16th Century
1. John Blanke has become one of the most widely recognized African men in Tudor England.
2. He probably arrived in England with Catherine of Aragon when she came to marry Henry VII’s eldest son, Arthur, in 1501.
3. There were a number of Africans living in England at the time and working in a range of jobs – in the royal court and in very unremarkable lives.
4. Blanke’s life was definitely not unremarkable though. He witnessed the funeral of Henry VII and played at that. He also played at the coronation of Henry VIII.
5. He was, as the picture shows, in 1511, playing at a special tournament in Westminster to celebrate the birth of his son (who died shortly afterwards).
6. Blanke held a prominent position within the royal household. He even petitioned the King, asking for a wage increase. He was bold, asking for a doubling of his wage from 8 to 16 pence per day.
7. He complained that his current wage “was not sufficient to mayntaigne to doo your grace lyke service as other trompeters doo”. He was successful!

G How to keep safeWith the half-term holiday approaching, it’s worth thinking about how you can stay safe and
minimise risky behaviour.
Think about behaviour and consequences
Thinking about behaviour and consequences can help you learn to work out how much risk is
involved in different situations. For example, you might think, ‘There are going to be times when it’s
really hard to say no to drugs, but I know how bad they are for my health and other parts of my life. I
really hope I can stay strong’.
Working out agreed rules
If you work with your parents on rules and consequences for breaking them, you can show you are
responsible and understand where the boundaries lie. Your parents are going to want to keep you
safe, so work with them.
Talking about values
Knowing what’s important to your family will help you develop responsibility and personal values.
Demonstrating strong values will set a good influence for others around you.
Let someone know where you are
Someone knowing where you are can help protect you. You should always let someone know where
you’re going to be and if plans change.
Stay safe online
Don’t post any personal information online – like your address, email address or mobile number.
Think carefully before posting pictures or videos of yourself. Once you’ve put a picture of yourself
online most people can see it and may be able to download it, it’s not just yours anymore.
