Getting startedWelcome to the Longman Economics Online Self-study and Assessment Centre (SAC)!
SAC is designed for the New Introductory Economics Series. It provides teachers with tools such as test reports and analysis to assess students’ learning progress. Teachers can arrange tests for students; students can also test their understanding of key concepts by doing the exercises in the Self-study Corner.
This user manual is mainly divided into two parts:1) Teacher login (Fig. 1) — describes the procedures for creating tests and viewing students’
test results and analysis.2) Administrator login (Fig. 1) — describes how to manage the database.

How to obtain SAC login informationUsers must acquire their user names and passwords before they can access SAC. The instruction for downloading SAC user accounts will be mailed to your school at the beginning of each school year. It will guide you to download Excel files containing login information for administrators, teachers and students.

SAC administrators at your school may also create or update accounts for teachers. Please refer to pp.21 – 27 for detail.

Teacher loginWelcome to SACMake sure your computer is connected to the internet before accessing SAC. Open the web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) and type the following website address in the URL field:http://sac.econ.ilongman.com/
Choose English for the interface of SAC (Fig. 2).
Click Teachers on the main interface (Fig. 3). Type your user name and password in the corresponding fields (Fig. 4). Click ‘Submit’ and log into SAC.

Tips: If you have forgotten your password, type your user name and click ‘Forgot password’. The password will be sent to your e-mail account registered in SAC.

Getting familiar with the interfaceYou will see the screen as shown in Fig. 5 after you have logged into the system as a teacher. Click the tabs (Fig. 6) on the toolbar to access the various functions of SAC.

Test managementBy default, you will enter the ‘Test management’ page after you have logged into SAC as a teacher. Fig. 7 shows the interface and the functions provided on this page.
Add tests
Click ‘Add test’ on the ‘Test management’ page (Fig. 7) and proceed to the ‘Add test’ page (Fig. 8).

Select a chapter from the drop-down menu, then check the radio button ○○ next to the test you
wish to assign.
2. Select a classSelect a class you want to assign the test to and then click to move the class into the ‘Selected’ window.
3. Set the date and time allowed for the test Click ‘Date’ and select the start date and end date
of the test (Fig. 9). Click ‘OK’. Type the time allowed in the field provided.
4. Choose the class(es) of students allowed to view their results
If a class is moved to the ‘Selected’ window, students in the class can view their test results and download answers once they have finished the test.
5. Click the ‘Add test’ button
Modify tests
After you have assigned a test to students, you can change your test preferences e.g. date and time allowed. To do so, click the name of the test on the ‘Test management’ page and proceed to the ‘Update test’ page (Fig. 10).
Please refer to the section ‘Add tests’ on p.7 for a detailed explanation of the settings.

Note: The order of questions for each paper is randomised so that different students working on the same paper will have different question orders.
Remove tests
1. Tick the check box in front of the name of the test and click ‘Remove test’.
2. In the pop-up window, click ‘OK’ and the selected test will be instantly removed.
Download test papers or answers
1. Click the ‘Questions’ button or ‘Questions and answers’ button next to the test paper you wish to download.
2. In the ‘File download’ window (Fig. 11), click ‘Open’ if you want the test to be opened automatically; click ‘Save’ if you want to save the test to a specific location on your computer.

Tips: To remove all tests on a page, tick the check box at the top left corner to select all tests, then click ‘Remove test’.
Note: Your students’ test results will also be deleted when that test is removed.
Note: The order of questions is randomised when students take the tests. Hence, the order of questions in the paper downloaded by teachers will be different from that of students.
Note: Questions and answers will be exported in Microsoft® Word (rtf) format.

Test logClick ‘Test log’ on the toolbar and proceed to ‘Test log’ page (Fig. 12). On this page, you can view the results of individual students and classes as a whole.
Remind students
You can send an automated reminder to students, asking them to complete the test before the due date. This reminder can be sent in the form of an SAC system message or an e-mail.
To send a reminder, do the following:1. Click ‘Remind student’ and a ‘Select reminder type’ window (Fig. 13) appears.
2. Click the drop-down menu.3. Select the type of reminder you want to send.4. Click ‘Send’.

View a student’s results in detail
On the ‘Test log’ page, you can view a student’s results in detail (Fig. 16) by clicking the ‘Look up’ button next to the student (Fig. 15). You can view a student’s performance by concepts and his/her answers to different questions.
Export students’ results
Teachers can export the results of all students to a file. On the ‘Test log’ page,
1. click ‘Export results (this class)’ to export the test results of a class;
2. click ‘Export results (all classes)’ to export the test results of all classes under the teacher account.
In the ‘File download’ window, click ‘Open’ if you want the document to be opened automatically; click ‘Save’ if you want to save the document to a specific location on your computer.

On this page, teachers can view students’ results in the Self-study Corner.

On the ‘Self-study log’ page, click ‘View top ten’ to view the top ten students who have the highest accumulated scores in Form 4 or Form 5 (Fig. 20).

Student databaseClick the ‘Student database’ tab on the toolbar and proceed to the ‘Student database’ page (Fig. 21). Teachers can view the data of students online or export the data to a file.
Export students’ data
On the ‘Student database’ page, click ‘Export data’ to enter the ‘Export data’ page (Fig. 22).
1. From the ‘Class’ menu, select the form and class you wish to export information about.
2. From the ‘Print field’ menu, select the information you wish to export by ticking the appropriate check boxes.
3. From the ‘Export to’ menu, select the file format you wish to export the information to.
4. Click ‘Export data’.5. In the ‘File download’ window, click ‘Open’ if you want
the exported information to be opened automatically; click ‘Save’ if you want to save the exported information to a specific location on your computer.

Tips: You can easily inform your students of their passwords: simply export the data in ‘Word – slip’ format and print the document.
Send e-mailClick the ‘Send e-mail’ tab on the toolbar to open the ‘Send e-mail’ page (Fig. 23). You can send e-mail messages to your SAC administrator, students and other teachers registered in the SAC database.
To send an e-mail message to the SAC administrator, do the following:1. Tick the check box next to ‘SAC administrator (school)’.2. Enter a subject for your e-mail message in the ‘Subject’ field.3. Write your message in the ‘Message’ window and click
‘Send’.
To send an e-mail message to teachers or students, do the following:1. Click the teacher(s) or the student(s) you wish to send an e-mail message to.2. Click to move the account(s) into the ‘Selected’ window.3. Enter a subject for your e-mail message in the ‘Subject’ field.4. Write your message in the ‘Message’ window and click ‘Send’.

Messages to studentsBesides sending e-mail messages, you may also send system messages to your students via SAC. Students will receive system messages when they log into the system. Click ‘Messages to students’ on the toolbar to enter the ‘Messages to students’ page (Fig. 24). On this page, you can send messages to your students, view the messages sent to them or remove the messages from the record.
Remove messages from the record
On the ‘Messages to students’ page (Fig. 24),1. click the check box next to the message you wish to remove;2. click ‘Remove message’;3. in the pop-up window, click ‘OK’ and the message is instantly removed.
To remove all messages on a page,1. click the check box at the top of the column to select all messages;2. click ‘Remove message’;3. in the pop-up window, click ‘OK’ and all the messages on that page are instantly removed.

View existing assessments
On the ‘View chapter’ page (Fig. 28), you will see a table showing the assessments available for the chapter. Click the name of an assessment on the ‘Assessment’ column to view the assessment.

SAC administrator loginSAC administrators can log into the system to manage the database. Open the web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) and type the following website address in the URL field:http://sac.econ.ilongman.com
Enter the ‘SAC administrator login’ page and then type your user name and password in the fields provided (Fig. 29). Click ‘Submit’ to log into SAC.
You will see the screen as shown in Fig. 30 once you have successfully logged into the system. Click the tabs on the top of the screen (Fig. 31) to access various functions of SAC.

Class databaseYou will enter the ‘Class database’ page (Fig. 32) by default after you have logged into the system as an administrator. On this page, you can view the forms and classes in the database.
Teacher databaseClick the ‘Teacher database’ tab and proceed to the ‘Teacher database’ page (Fig. 33). On this page, SAC administrators can modify the information in the teacher database.

Import teachers’ data
SAC provides the capability of importing teacher accounts with a file. Click ‘Import teacher data’ and proceed to the ‘Import teacher data’ page (Fig. 34). Click ‘Browse’ and select the file you wish to import. Click ‘Confirm’ and the teacher accounts will be imported immediately.
Add teacher accounts
Administrators may also create teacher accounts one by one.1. Click ‘Add teacher account’ and proceed to the ‘Add
teacher account’ page.2. Fill in the information in the fields provided (Fig. 37).3. Click ‘Confirm’ and a teacher account will be created.

Update teacher accounts
Administrators can help teachers update their information, including their names, class(es), user names and e-mail addresses.1. Click the name of the teacher in the table and enter the ‘Update teacher data’ page
(Fig. 38).2. Make the necessary changes. Click ‘Confirm’ and the teacher database will be updated
immediately.
Remove teacher accounts
1. Select the teacher account(s) to be removed by clicking the check box in front of the name(s) of the teacher(s) (Fig. 39).
2. Click ‘Remove teacher account’.3. Click ‘OK’ in the pop-up dialog box and the
selected account(s) will be removed immediately.
Change teacher passwords
Administrators can help teachers change their passwords without knowing their old ones.1. Click ‘Change teacher password’ to enter the ‘Change teacher password’ page.2. Select the teacher who needs to change his/her password. Enter and re-type the new
password in the fields provided.3. Click ‘Confirm’ and the new password becomes effective immediately.

Student databaseSAC administrators can view and export students’ information and change class passwords. Click ‘Student database’ on the toolbar and enter the ‘Student database’ page (Fig. 42).
Change class passwords
Administrators can help a class of students change their passwords.1. Click ‘Change class password’ to open the ‘Change class password’ page.2. In the table shown in Fig. 43, select the classes of students that need to change their
passwords.3. Enter and re-type the new password in the fields provided.4. Click ‘Confirm’ and the new password becomes effective immediately.
