www.TexasSports.com HORNS TRAVEL TO NOTRE DAME FOR OPENER: Texas will open its sec- ond season under Charlie Strong by mak- ing a visit to No. 11/11 Notre Dame on Saturday, Sept. 5, for just its fourth game at Notre Dame Stadium, and 11th overall meeting between the two historic pro- grams. The Irish and Longhorns rank sec- ond and third, respectively, on the NCAA all-time wins list. Notre Dame lays claim to 882 victories while Texas has 881. In the head-to-head series, Notre Dame has an 8-2 advantage with the most recent meetings taking place in 1995-96, when the Irish came out with a pair of victories (55-27 at Notre Dame in 1995; 27-24 in Austin in ’96). The Irish have won the last four meetings (victories in 1970 and 1977), with the last Texas win coming in the Cotton Bowl following the 1969 season – a 21-17 UT victory. Notre Dame holds a 2-1 series advantage at home. UT IN OPENERS: In its previous 122 years of football, UT is 102-17-3 (.848) in season-opening games. The Longhorns are 22-10-1 (.726) when opening the year away from home with this marking the first time UT has begun the season on the road since 2010 when it defeated Rice 34-10 at NRG Stadium (then named Reliant Stadium) in Houston. Texas last opened the season with a true road game in 1995 at Hawaii (38-17 victory). The Horns have won 15 straight season openers. Charlie Strong has won four of five season openers in his head-coaching career, including a 38-7 win against North Texas last season. Brown, a consensus first-team All- American, was also a finalist for both the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (nation’s top defensive player) and Outland Trophy (nation’s best interior lineman). Texas also lost Quandre Diggs, a four-year starting cornerback, defensive end Cedric Reed, a two-time All-Big 12 player, and two- year starting safety Mykkele Thompson. In addition to starting running back Malcolm Brown, the offense lost two of its starting wide receivers in Jaxon Shipley and John Harris. or signed as free agents. William Russ and Michael Davidson each served as the No. 1 punter last season, and both were seniors. Russ ended his career No. 4 on the school’s all-time punting average (42.35) chart, with all of his 66 attempts occurring last season.

NOTRE DAME SERIES TIDBITS: This year’s game between Texas and Notre Dame will be the 11th meeting for the tra-ditional football powers. It also is the first time the Longhorns and Fighting Irish will have met in a season opener. The earliest previous contest between the two teams came in the second game of the season in 1954 when No. 2 Notre Dame bested No. 4 Texas by the score of 21-0. Notre Dame leads the all-time series 8-2 with the Fighting Irish winning the last four meet-ings. The Irish won both games of a home-and-home series in 1995 and ‘96. The Irish also won against the Longhorns in the Cotton Bowl in 1977 and 1970. Three of the 10 previous meetings occurred in the Cotton Bowl. The last time Texas defeated Notre Dame was at the 1969 Cotton Bowl, 21-17, when the Longhorns claimed the national title. The last time Texas won at Notre Dame was in 1934 when the Horns had the advantage 7-6 over the Irish. With the 8-2 advantage in the series, Notre Dame has outscored Texas 268-117. The two victories by Texas have been decided by an average of 2.5 points.

LAST TIME VS. NOTRE DAME: Notre Dame got the best of Texas the last time the Fighting Irish and Longhorns squared off (Sept. 21, 1996). It was a top-10 match-

up with Notre Dame coming in No. 9 in both polls and Texas standing at No. 6/8. Notre Dame got the 27-24 win in Austin. After Texas scored to go up 24-17 with 10:53 to play, Notre Dame tallied 10 unan-swered points over the final 3:53 of the game, including a 39-yard field goal by Jim Sanson as time expired.

FIRST-AND-GOAL • Head coach Charlie Strong served as the Notre Dame defensive line coach from 1995 through 1998, the first two seasons under head coach Lou Holtz and the final two with Bob Davie. • UT junior reserve quarterback Trey Holtz is the grandson of legendary Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz. He was the Fighting Irish head coach from 1986 to 1996, leading them to the 1988 national title. Trey Holtz was born in 1994 while his father, current head coach at Louisiana Tech University, was a Notre Dame assistant. However, Trey spent little time there as his father took over as Connecticut’s head coach that same year.• Duke Thomas, who leads the team with 23 careeer starts, is the lone senior listed in the secondary’s depth chart. In fact, there are only four seniors in the entire defensive depth chart. Conversely, there are 12 fresh-men (eight true/four redshirts) listed in the defensive depth chart, including three first-teamers (LBs Malik Jefferson and Edwin Freeman, and CB John Bonney).• The offense has more experience than the defense with seven seniors listed in the depth chart, though Sedrick Flowers has the most career starts with only 14. There are eight freshmen (six true/two redshirts) in the offensive depth chart.

BREAKING DOWN THE 2015 SCHED-ULE: UT will play eight games this season against teams that reached a bowl game in 2014, and eight contests vs. programs either ranked or receiving votes in the preseason AP or USA Today Coaches poll. Those eight bowl teams (see below) all registered at least seven wins in 2014. Last season, Texas played nine teams that were in bowl games in 2013. As in most years, Texas will play a challenging nonconfer-ence schedule, with Notre Dame and Rice both reaching bowl games a year ago. UT will also face Cal, a Power 5 Conference team that missed the postseason by only one game. Texas opens the season at Notre Dame, as two of the top three winningest programs in college football history meet. Longtime Southwest Conference foes, Texas and Rice will meet for the first time since 2011, the same season the Longhorns last faced Cal.

SECOND SEASON UNDER STRONG: Texas is set to begin its second season under the guidance of Charlie Strong. Last season, the Longhorns overcame a 3-5 start to the season to reach their 53rd bowl game in program history. Prior to his stint at Texas, Strong spent the previous four sea-sons as Louisville head coach, re-energizing a program that had a 15-21 record in the three years prior to his arrival. He posted a 37-15 record, which included a pair of Big East Conference Championships (2011, 2012). Strong was named Big East Coach of the Year in both 2010 and 2012, and led the Cardinals to four bowl appearances with three wins. In his final two years, Louisville was the nation’s fourth-winningest pro-gram, posting a 23-3 record (88.5 percent). Prior to his stint at Louisville, Strong was a long-time successful defensive coordina-tor, spending four years at South Carolina (1999-2002) and seven at Florida (2003-09).

COMPETITION AT QUARTERBACK: One year after starting 12 games at quar-terback when starter David Ash went down with an injury in the opener, junior Tyrone Swoopes has seen stiff competition from redshirt freshman Jerrod Heard in the spring and preseason. Swoopes played sparingly in six games as a true fresh-

man during 2013 before being inserted into the starting lineup in game two last season. He went on to complete 224 of 384 passes (58.3 percent) for 2,409 yards. Swoopes threw for more than 300 yards in three games, which is tied for fourth on the UT single-season list. He started the final 12 games last season, taking every snap in those contests. Heard, who led Denton Guyer High School to Texas state titles as a junior and senior, served as the backup last season, though he ended up redshirting. After practicing most of 2014 with just two scholarship quarterbacks, the Longhorns added true freshmen Kai Locksley and Matthew Merrick to the mix in the offseason.

MORE EXPERIENCED O-LINE: The Longhorns hope to benefit in 2015 from playing a number of inexperienced offen-sive linemen last season. Four of the five starters - LT Marcus Hutchins, LG Sedrick Flowers, C Taylor Doyle and RG Kent Perkins - from last season are back, along with Jake Raulerson, who started five games (four at center/one at right tackle). Flowers and Perkins have the most experience as each played reserve roles in 2013. But

2015 Texas Football Notes • at Notre Dame [Sept. 5]4

Hutchins saw his first-ever action along the offensive line last season, and Doyle played only a handful of snaps during 2013. The loss of senior center Dominic Espinosa (broken foot) in the opening game last season was a major blow as he was the only returning o-line starter from 2013. But last year’s offensive line eventu-ally started to come together when Doyle took over as the starting center in the sixth game. Flowers was the lone offensive line-man to start at the same position in all 13 games, though Hutchins had one start at right tackle and the final 12 at left tackle. Last season, freshmen Elijah Rodriguez, Terrell Cuney and Alex Anderson all red-shirted and now hope to add depth to the unit. During the spring, the return-ing group was buoyed by the addition of four incoming recruits. Brandon Hodges, Tristan Nickelson, Garrett Thomas and Connor Williams enrolled in classes in January and added depth and compe-tition during practice. Other additions to the offensive line include true fresh-men Patrick Vahe and Buck Major, both

of whom joined the squad for preseason camp. With solid play in the preseason, Williams and Vahe emerged as the No. 1 left tackle and right guard, respectively, heading into the season.

LOOKING FOR REPLACEMENTS AT WIDEOUT AND TIGHT END: The Texas receiving corps is going through an overhaul with the departure of starting wideouts John Harris and Jaxon Shipley, and tight end Geoff Swaim. Last season, Harris (68 for 1,051) and Shipley (59 for 577) ranked 1-2 on the team in both recep-tions and receiving yards. Swaim only caught 10 passes, but was a key cog in the running game with his blocking skills, which helped him get taken by Dallas in the seventh round of the 2015 NFL Draft. The Longhorns return players who pro-duced just 32 percent of the receptions and 30 percent of the receiving yards. Senior Marcus Johnson is the most pro-ductive receiver remaining on the ros-ter, having posted a combined 49 catches for 663 receiving yards in 2013-14. Daje

A long-time defensive coordinator, Charlie Strong’s teams pride themselves on being tough, physical and sound defensively. During his four years (2010-13) as Louisville head coach, the team improved in a number of categories culminating with 2013’s top-rated defense in the FBS. The Cardinals were in the top 25 nationally in total defense in each of Strong’s four seasons. Strong’s offenses, meanwhile, also showed great improvement during his tenure at Louisville. The year prior to Strong’s arrival, the Cardinals ranked 91st nationally in total offense (334.1 yards/game), but improved their ranking by 20 spots in year one and checked in at 28th in the country in 2013 (460.8 yards/game). Louisville was one of the most efficient third-down teams in the nation as well while ranking 25th in scoring, its highest ranking since 2007.

Johnson, a senior, has also shown flashes of his explosiveness, but was limited to just six games last season. However, in his career, Daje Johnson has scored on an 84-yard run, a 70-yard reception and an 85-yard punt return. There are also a num-ber of other options with juniors Jacorey Warrick and Ty Templin, and sophomores Dorian Leonard, Lorenzo Joe and Armanti Foreman seeing the most time last season. Foreman and Joe were the most productive of that group, each registering 10 recep-tions. True freshmen John Burt, DeAndre McNeal and Ryan Newsome joined the team for preseason and figure to see time this season. Converted fullback Alex De La Torre, along with sophomores Andrew Beck and Blake Whiteley, will look to replace Swaim. De La Torre, a senior, has been a solid blocker. Beck began last year as a linebacker before moving to tight end in the preseason where he proved to be a capable blocker in his reserve role. Whiteley, who injured a knee in the pre-season, redshirted in 2014 after transfer-ring from Arizona Western Community College where he played one season, but emerged as the No. 1 JUCO tight end in the nation. In the preseason, junior Caleb Bluiett was moved from defensive end to tight end, a position he played in 2013. Senior Logan Mills also made the move from defensive end to tight end to aid in position depth.

NO GRAY AREA: Texas will have to replace running back Malcolm Brown, who ended his career as the ninth-leading rusher in school history (2,678 yards) and started all 13 games in 2014, but senior Johnathan Gray has been a key part of the offense the last three seasons. Gray ranks 15th on the UT career rushing list (2,118), but that total could be higher had he not suffered an Achilles injury which caused him to miss the final four games in 2013. He played all 13 games in 2014 and rushed for 637 yards to go with a team-high seven touchdowns, but said this spring he didn’t feel all the way back until the West Virginia game on Nov. 8. Gray also catches the ball well coming out of the backfield. He had a career-high 20 receptions last season. Gray will be joined in the backfield by return-ing tailback D’Onta Foreman who played sparingly last season as a true freshman, but showed promise before injuring his hand and missing the final two games. True freshman Chris Warren figures to see time behind Gray and Foreman. True freshmen tailbacks Tristian Houston and Kirk Johnson also joined the team in the preseason.

LONGHORNS ACTIVE IN THE NFL

The Longhorns added 27 newcomers, includ-ing six who enrolled in the spring, in the 2015 recruiting class. Offensive line (six), defensive back (five) and linebacker (four) were positions that have the most incoming players. The Longhorns stayed within the state of Texas for 19 recruits and had three from the state of Florida. There was also one each from California, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi and New York. “We know this – the state of Texas will always be our home ground,” head coach Charlie Strong said on National Signing Day. “We will always build it from this state. There are great high school coaches in this state. That’s what it’s all about. We will always know this, any time we need to go out of state where we can get into battles, I don’t mind going outside the state to get in a battle. That’s what it’s all about; that’s what recruiting is all about. We knew we were not going to back down.”

UT’S 2014 NCAA/BIG 12 RANKINGS

CHANGES ALONG THE DEFENSIVE LINE: Texas will have a tough time replac-ing All-America defensive tackle Malcom Brown, who ended up being a first-round pick of New England in the 2015 NFL Draft, but two experienced and talented players should help ease the transition. Desmond Jackson, a fifth-year senior, returns after missing nearly all of the 2014 season with a foot injury. He started the first three games at defensive tackle before lisfranc surgery on his injured foot ended his season after three games. Hassan Ridgeway stepped into his spot and performed admirably alongside Brown, who went on to earn consensus first-team All-America honors and was named a finalist for the both the Nagurski Trophy and Outland Trophy. Brown led the team in sacks with 6.5 and Ridgeway was second with 6.0. Head coach Charlie Strong calls Ridgeway “a mainstay in the middle.” Poona Ford, who saw time as a true freshman in 2014, junior Paul Boyette Jr. and junior Alex Norman should also expect to see time in the defensive tackle rotation, along with redshirt fresh-men Chris Nelson and Jake McMillon, who moved back to defensive tackle in the off-season. McMillon served as a reserve offen-sive lineman last season. Cedric Reed will be another difficult player to replace. The two-time All-Big 12 defensive end recorded 29 tackles for loss and 15.5 sacks during his final two seasons. Naashon Hughes, Shiro Davis and Caleb Bluiett split snaps at the defensive end spot opposite Reed, though Bluiett moved to tight end during the pre-season. Davis started the first three games in 2014 and Hughes seven of the last eight. Juniors Bryce Cottrell and Quincy Vasser also figure to garner some playing time this season. Cottrell played in nine games last season and Vasser joined the team in January from Navarro College where he was a second-team JUCO All-American in 2014. Redshirt freshman Derick Roberson missed the spring with a shoulder injury but returned in the preseason and should expect to see time. True freshman Charles Omenihu figures into the defensive end rotation as well.

LINEBACKER JOBS OPEN: Texas spent the majority of 2014 in a two-linebacker set and both of those productive players have departed. Jordan Hicks and Steve Edmond were the top two tacklers on the team last season. Hicks, a 2014 sec-ond-team All-American and third-round choice by Philadelphia in the 2015 NFL

Draft, collected a career-high 147 tackles, tied for the seventh-highest total on the UT single-season list. Edmond chipped in a career-best 131 tackles from his middle linebacker spot. He had 323 career tackles, which was just 23 shy of the UT all-time top 10. Seniors Dalton Santos and Peter Jinkens, and junior Timothy Cole have the most experience on the current ros-ter. Jinkens has 11 starts in his career and Santos has nine. The Longhorns were thin at linebacker during the spring as Santos missed the second half with an injury. He also missed most of the preseason with an injury. The Horns were fortu-nate that one of their six early enrollees was linebacker Malik Jefferson, among the more-highly regarded prospects nationally in the 2015 signing class. Jefferson’s tal-ent was on display in the Orange-White Scrimmage when he posted six tackles, one forced fumble and a pass breakup. Edwin Freeman, who scooped up the Jefferson forced fumble and returned it for 33 yards for a touchdown, is a converted safety who redshirted last season. Four of the six line-backers on the season-opening two-deep. In addition to Jefferson and Freeman, true freshmen Anthony Wheeler and Cameron Townsend could see time.

RELOADING IN THE SECONDARY: Cornerback Quandre Diggs, a four-year starter, and safety/nickel corner Mykkele Thompson, a two-year starter, were selected in the 2015 NFL Draft, but senior Duke Thomas, junior Dylan Haines, sophomore Jason Hall and junior Adrian Colbert return as starters in the secondary. Thomas has started the last two seasons at cornerback. He led the team in pass breakups (10) and was tied for second in interceptions (3) in 2014. Haines was a pleasant surprise last season, climbing the depth chart begin-ning in the spring. The former walk-on was inserted into the starting lineup at safety in the second game and ended the year with a team-best four interceptions, plus seven pass breakups (second on the team). His 86 tackles were third on the team and are the most among returning players. Hall and Colbert split time at one of the starting safeties. The hard-hitting Hall registered 49 tackles and Colbert tallied 20. Junior Kevin Vaccaro, along with true freshmen P.J. Locke III and DeShon Elliott, will battle for snaps at the two safety spots. Junior Bryson Echols and sophomore Antwuan Davis are cornerbacks with playing experi-ence. Sheroid Evans will not play this season

www.TexasSports.com 7

due to a knee injury after being sidelined last year. Echols started once last season and has played in 26 career games. Davis played in nine contests last year, mostly on spe-cial teams. Cornerback should get a boost from redshirt freshmen John Bonney and Jermaine Roberts Jr., as well as a number of incoming freshmen including Kris Boyd, Davante Davis and Holton Hill. Bonney was praised in the spring for his grasp of the nickel cornerback position which was manned by Diggs and Thompson the last two seasons.

ROSE RETURNS, PUNTER JOB OPEN: Place-kicker Nick Rose is back in the fold for his senior year, but the Longhorns are in search of a new punter with the departure of William Russ and Michael Davidson, who were both seniors last season. Rose connect-ed on 14 of 21 field goals in 2014, including 7 of 11 on attempts of 40 yards or more. He

was also a weapon on kickoffs, with 44 of 61 attempts (72.1 percent) going for touch-backs. Texas will also need a replacement for deep snapper Nate Boyer, who served in that role the last three seasons. Junior Kyle Ashby has experience, having served as the snapper for punts during 2013. Sophomore Mitchell Becker handled most of the punting chores in the spring, but freshman Michael Dickson, a former Australian Rules football player, figures to get the first opportunity at the job. Russ and Davidson combined for a 42.3-yard punting average last season. Russ dropped 33 percent of his punts (22 of 67) inside the opponents’ 20-yard line.

STAFF ADDITIONS: There were three adjustments to head coach Charlie Strong’s staff following his first season:• Brick Haley joined the staff in February as defensive line coach. He spent the last six seasons as LSU’s defensive line coach.

His resume also includes stops with the Chicago Bears (2007-08/DL), Mississippi State (2004-06/DL) and Baylor (1999-2001/DC/LB). During his time at LSU (2009-14), Haley coached 10 defensive linemen selected in the NFL Draft, including a pair of first-round picks in DT Michael Brockers (No. 12 overall in 2012) and DE Barkevious Mingo (No. 6 overall in 2013). Danielle Hunter was selected in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings, extending LSU’s streak of years with at least one defensive lineman picked in the draft to 12.• Jay Norvell was named wide receivers coach in January. Norvell has three stints as an offensive coordinator, mostly recently at Oklahoma where he served as co-offen-sive coordinator/wide receivers coach from 2011-14 and assistant offensive coordina-tor/WR coach from 2008-10. Three of the top four players on OU’s all-time receptions

Sophomore Tyrone Swoopes became the first quarterback in school history to pro-duce back-to-back games with at least 300 passing yards and 50 rushing yards when he passed for 334 and rushed for 50 vs. Oklahoma, then threw for 321 and rushed for 95 against Iowa State. Swoopes was also just the sixth quarterback to throw for 300 or more yards in the Red River Showdown, and only the fourth player with at least 300 yards of total offense in the annual game.

4: Four of five starters return on the offen-sive line: LT Marcus Hutchins, LG Sedrick Flowers, C Taylor Doyle and RG Kent Perkins. That group has accounted for 52 career starts, with all but two occurring last season. Flowers and Perkins each started once in 2013. Jake Raulerson also started five games last year as a redshirt freshman. Center Dominic Espinosa was the lone returning offensive line starter heading into 2014.

5: The Longhorns return five of their top six rushers from last season, though the lone departure is leading ground gainer Malcolm Brown. He posted 708 rushing yards and ended his career No. 9 on the UT all-time list (2,678).

8: The Longhorns have eight of their top 15 tacklers back from last season, but only one among the top seven. Dylan Haines was third on the team with 86.

10: Texas returns 10 of the 15 players who caught a pass in 2014, but will have to replace its top two receivers. John Harris posted 68 catches for 1,051 receiving yards and Jaxon Shipley had 59 receptions for 577 yards.

15: Senior Johnathan Gray ranks No. 15 on the school’s all-time rushing list (2,109).

17: Duke Thomas (10) and Dylan Haines (7) accounted for 17 of the team’s 41 pass break-ups (41.5 percent) last season.

18: Texas has just 18 seniors (14 scholar-ship), on its roster.

176: Over the last nine years, Texas has the most Academic All-Big 12 selections of any team in the conference with 176.

chart played under Norvell’s direction – Ryan Broyles (349), Kenny Stills (204) and Juaquin Iglesias (202) – while five of the top six single-season reception marks have come under Norvell. He was also the OC/QB coach at UCLA in 2007 and at Nebraska from 2004-06. In addition, he coached in the NFL with Indianapolis (1998-2001) and Oakland (2002-03).• Jeff Traylor joined the staff in February as tight ends coach/special teams coordinator. Traylor is in his first stop at the collegiate level after a tremendously successful high school career. Traylor was Gilmer [Texas] High School’s head coach for 15 seasons (2000-14), amassing three state champion-ships (2004, ‘09 ‘14) and a 175-26 overall record (.871). He also led Gilmer to state runner-up finishes in 2007 and 2012, while winning 12 district titles. Gilmer reached the 10-win mark 11 times under Traylor’s direction, all in the last 12 years, while also recording seven 13-win campaigns. The Buckeyes reached the 15-win plateau three times, all of which resulted in undefeated state championship years, including two 16-0 marks in 2004 and 2014.

STRONG IN THE CLASSROOM: Head coach Charlie Strong stresses not only suc-cess on the field, but also off it. Texas had an extremely impressive performance in the classroom during 2014-15:• After the Spring 2015 semester, UT held its highest cumulative GPA in program history (2.77).• Eighteen (18) Longhorns earned Academic All-Big 12 honors in 2014.• Sixty-seven (67) Horns were named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll by earn-ing at least a 3.0 semester GPA in Fall 2014 and/or Spring 2015.• Forty (40) current and former players graduated or are projected to graduate dur-ing the 2014-15 academic year. Graduates included NFL alumni Priest Holmes, Nathan Vasher and Marcus Wilkins.• Texas posted the highest multiyear APR (958) in program history with the 2013-14 data released in May.• There are currently five players who have earned their degrees: Alex De La Torre (spring 2015), Taylor Doyle (spring 2015), Sheroid Evans (summer 2015), Sedrick Flowers (spring 2015) and Marcus Hutchins (fall 2014).

STRONG AT-A-GLANCE

STRONG YEAR-BY-YEAR

A two-time conference coach of the year and the architect of a revitalized University of Louisville pro-gram that posted at least 11 wins in each of his final two seasons, Charlie Strong is in his second year as the Texas head football coach. Strong, the 29th head coach in UT history, spent the previous four seasons as Louisville head coach, re-ener-gizing a program that was coming off back-to-back los-ing seasons (5-7 in 2008, 4-8 in 2009) and a 15-21 record in the three years prior to his arrival. He amassed a 37-15 record, a pair of Big East Conference Championships (2011, 2012) and was named Big East Coach of the Year in both 2010 and 2012. He also led UofL to four straight bowl game appearances (3-1 record), including a victory over No. 4 Florida in the 2013 Allstate Sugar Bowl. During 2014, Strong rallied the Longhorns from a 3-5 record to reach a bowl game despite the loss of two key starters on offense (QB David Ash, C Dominic Espinosa) and one on defense (DT Desmond Jackson) for nearly the entire season. Texas ended the season with one of the better defenses in the nation, ranking 25th in the FBS in total yards allowed (348.5 per game), No. 11 in passing defense (184.2 ypg), No. 7 in yards allowed per play (4.68), 15th in passing efficiency defense (110.04 rating), tied for 11th in sacks (3.1 pg) and 31st in points allowed (23.8 pg). A number of players earned individual honors in Strong’s first season. Defensive tackle Malcom Brown was a finalist for both the Nagurski and Outland trophies, as well as becoming the 47th consensus All-American in school history. Brown and linebacker Jordan Hicks earned All-America honors. They were also among 10 players to secure All-Big 12 accolades. Five players - Brown (first round to New England), Hicks (third round to Philadelphia), safety Mykkele Thompson (fifth round to NY Giants), cornerback Quandre Diggs (sixth round to Detroit) and tight end Geoff Swaim (seventh round to Dallas) - were selected in the 2015 NFL Draft.

During his final two seasons at Louisville, the Cardinals’ were nation’s fourth-winningest program, posting a 23-3 record (88.5 percent) and registering bowl victories in consecutive seasons for the first time in school history. Louisville’s 11-plus win seasons in 2012 and 2013 were the fourth and fifth in school history and the first back to back. UofL finished among the nation’s top 15 for a school-record second straight year. Strong spent seven seasons as the defensive coordi-nator at the University of Florida under Meyer from 2005-09 and Ron Zook from 2003-04 where he helped the Gators win a pair of national titles – 2008 over Oklahoma and 2006 over Ohio State. From 2003-09, Strong’s defensive units at Florida allowed an average of 17.6 points per game, which ranked ninth in the country over that span. His stint as defensive coordinator marked his fourth tenure at Florida, including a stretch from 1991-94 in which he coached defensive ends (1991-93) and defensive tackles (1994) after coaching outside linebackers in 1988-89, and serving as a graduate assistant in 1983-84. He served as Florida’s assistant head coach from 2005-07 and was the associate head coach in 2008-09. Before returning to Florida for the fourth time, Strong was defensive coordinator at the University of South Carolina from 1999-2002. Outside of his time at Louisville, Florida, and South Carolina, Strong’s career stops have included one season (1985) at Texas A&M as a graduate assistant before moving on to Southern Illinois as wide receivers coach from 1986-87, one season (1990) at Mississippi as wide receivers coach and four seasons (1995-98) as the defen-sive line coach at Notre Dame. A native of Batesville, Ark., Strong was a three-year letterwinner (1979-81) and three-time all-conference safety at Central Arkansas, where he graduated in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in education. He and his wife, Vicki, have a son, Tory, and two daughters, Hailee and Hope.

USE OF AUDIO/VIDEO IN COVERAGE

Any accredited media entity collecting “video or audio materials” (film, traditional video or audio, digital video or audio, photos, etc.) from University of Texas Athletics events (games, practices, post-practice/post-game interviews and press conferences) may use that mate-rial only for traditional television newscasts, web-based or print coverage (see note below regarding policy on game video on web), or other electronic transmission as approved by The University in writing, with a limitation of up to three (3) minutes in length from any single event. That three (3)-minute package may contain no more than two (2) minutes of game highlights. Its usage must be only as sup-porting video/audio for a reported story and not simply as rebroadcast/streamed highlights or interview sessions. Accredited media entities may not offer any live video, audio or other coverage of the event (or tape delay rebroadcast coverage in its entirety) without the advance written permission of The University of Texas athletics department. Video is for news usage only and may not be sponsored or sold. This policy includes all games, matches, practices and events involving any of Texas’ athletics programs. It includes all media events — press conferences, pre/post-practice interviews and pre/post-game interviews. Policy permits enti-ties to use up to two (2) minutes of video on air (whether taken from the network feed or shot themselves) or on the entity’s website. Reports and features must be filed postgame and not during the game. If a game/event is contracted to a network television partner, all highlights may remain on a website no longer than 48 hours following the game/event’s conclusion. Highlights may not be used via social media platforms except as a link back to the website/URL hosting the highlights.
