DAN: (To JAMES.) So where are you going?

JAMES: (Points to a spot on his map.) Here.

DAN: Hey! Us, too! Maybe we can go together.

HANNAH: I feel I should point out that if we are ALL going to the SAME place, some of us are going the WRONG way!

JAMES: That IS a problem! Which way should we go?

BETH: Maybe it would help if we knew where we were.

JAMES andDAN: (Pointing to different spots on maps.) We’re here!

ABNER: Oh, great! I say we stay here, have something to eat and let someone find us.

SARAH: Who is going to find us out here?

HANNAH: What we need is a new leader! (HANNAH and SARAH take DAN’s map and look at it.)

SARAH: (Looks at map, puzzled.) I don’t remember going by that pond.

BETH: (Taking map.) Let me have a look! (Stares at map.) Well, here’s the problem. That pond is a greasy fingerprint smudge.

HANNAH: (Groans.) That must be our map. Abner’s been eat-ing every five minutes!

ABNER: I have to keep my strength up.

JAMES: (Looking at his map.) No, it’s on our map, too. Just in a different place. (Throws map on ground.) I’m afraid we’re all lost.

BETH: Great.

JESSE: (Enters.) Hey, there. Why’s everyone so down?

ABNER: We’re lost!

JESSE: Where are you going?

JAMES: Jerusalem!

SARAH: We’re supposed to be going there for the big Passover celebration.

HANNAH: We got separated from our parents’ caravan group.

JAMES: Our parents are going to be really angry with us!

JESSE: (Sees maps.) Where’d you get those?

JAMES: Some guy down the road. He was selling these very cheap.

DAN: Hey! We got ours from some old guy, too. He said it had a great shortcut.

BETH: Yeah, our guy said the same thing. Some shortcut. Now we’re lost.

JESSE: Well, those maps are worthless. They’ll take you to the wrong place every time. What you need is a reliable guide who’ll show you the right way.

HANNAH: (Suspiciously.) How much do you charge?

JESSE: (Laughing.) I’m not going to Jerusalem. But do you see those men over there with the donkey?

HANNAH: Yes.

JESSE: Well, those guys are taking the donkey to their teacher.

BETH: Good for them. Now what about us?

JESSE: Their teacher is going to Jerusalem. And if anyone can show you the right way, He can!

SARAH: But can we really trust Him?

JESSE: (Smiles.) Yes. I think you could, and should, trust Him—even with your lives. (Exits.)

SARAH: With our lives? I don’t get it. All we want to do is get to Jerusalem.

JAMES: I wonder who that teacher is? I mean, why would that kid have so much faith in Him?

Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.

What’s grace? When most people hear the word, they might think of a dancer or gymnast—a person whose moves are graceful. A less-obvious association

might be with a person whose actions are gracious, expressing kindness or courtesy. But for God’s family, “grace” takes on a glorious meaning: the com-

pletely undeserved love and favor God gives us through Jesus Christ! There is no reasonable explanation for grace; we have nothing to offer God. He loves us because of who He is, not because of what we can do. We cannot earn grace but we can receive it!

In this study, Jesus describes Himself as “the way” (John 14:6). Like a specific road or path, He is the only trail that will lead us to the Father—the very place we most need to go! His description of Himself came only days after He had come up a literal road-way into Jerusalem to the sounds of rejoicing crowds who shouted the ancient words from Psalm 118, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” (v. 26). But the cry would soon change: “Crucify Him!” This was the way Jesus had to take—the way of obedience to His Father. He laid down His life so that those whom the Father had given Him could come to the Father by Him.

We cannot earn God’s grace. We can’t impress Him with anything we have or do. When we accept His grace and His gift of forgiveness, we can know that we have set our feet upon the way that leads us to our Father, the way that takes us home to everything we have ever deeply longed for or needed. Even when that way takes us through times that are painful or hard to understand, Jesus Himself is still our way through every trouble and every joy to reach our Father’s house.

Procedure1. Students stand in the center of the room. Designate one side of the room “fair” and the other side “foul.” Read one of the situations below. Students move to the fair side of the room if they think the person got what was deserved or to the foul side of the room if they don’t think the person got what was deserved.

• Situation 1: Your younger brother gets the same allowance as you, but your parents say it’s because he does extra chores.

• Situation 2: A kid was put in the starting lineup even though she didn’t come to practice one day last week (her mom’s car broke down on the way to practice).

• Situation 3: You got an A on a test even though you didn’t study.

• Situation 4: You are invited to a birthday party at a water park, but you have to pay your own way. A kid from school who lives in a homeless shelter gets to go for free.

2. Invite volunteers to tell other situations. Students show their responses to each situation mentioned.

3. Conclude the activity by saying,

• We think it’s fair when someone gets what we think they deserved. But sometimes people get good things that we think they don’t deserve.

• When has someone you know gotten something good he or she

didn’t deserve? What makes you think the person didn’t deserve it?

• When we receive something good that is undeserved, it’s called grace. In our study, we are going to talk about a way that we have received grace from God.

As Bible teachers and men-tors, we want our students to know and love Jesus. This lesson provides an excellent opportunity to talk about faith in Jesus. But students do not come to faith in Christ by being exposed to excellent teaching or creative activities. The Spirit of God convicts and convinces students to trust in Him. As mentors, our responsi-bility is to live in obedience to Christ as we pray, prepare and lovingly point students toward God. Then trust God to work!

2. Students work in pairs or individually to discover the license-plate messages on pages 1 and 4. Ask the questions below.

• What do the messages say?

• Which of these messages describes the word “grace”?

• What are some other ways we could describe or define the word “grace”?

• Think of a time when something good happened to you or was given to you even though you didn’t deserve it. What happened? How did you feel?

3. Invite students to create their own license-plate messages about grace, what God is like or how Jesus helps us, using a combination of eight to ten letters or numbers. As needed, give students ideas about using numbers for syllables that sound like the numbers and leaving out some vowels (“1drfl” for “wonderful,” “2day” for “today,” “4gve” for “forgive,” “gr8” for “great,” etc.).

4. Students trade papers to discover other messages.

When have you been treated better than you really deserved? Today we’ll talk about God showing us love

that we don’t deserve.

Listen for the word “grace” in this Bible passage. (Students read aloud Ephesians 2:6-10 from Bibles or Ephesians 2 Poster. Optional: Play “Incomparable Riches” song from CD or DVD.)

• What do we have because of God’s grace? (“Incomparable riches.” The gift of salvation.)

• How is God’s grace shown or expressed to us? (Through Jesus.)

It may seem to us that when Jesus, God’s Son, lived on Earth, people should have easily recognized who He is and understood what He was teaching about how to know God. But it wasn’t that easy. The people wondered about who Jesus is, and they had lots of questions about what He was teaching. Let’s look at what these people thought and some of the questions they asked.

At the beginning of Jesus’ last week on Earth, something happened that made it seem as though most everyone recognized who Jesus is. What did crowds of

people do and say on the famous day when Jesus arrived in Jerusalem? (Students tell information about Palm Sunday, reading verses from John 12:12-15 as needed.)

After the events of this exciting day, the disciples, Jesus’ friends and followers, probably expected great things to happen! Maybe they were hoping that Jesus would lead the crowds in a revolt against the Roman rulers. Because they hated the Romans so much, they hoped that Jesus would be their new ruler. But Jesus knew that God had a different plan in mind, and Jesus wanted the disciples to know all about it.

The disciples gathered together with Jesus to celebrate the Passover feast. This celebration was one of the Jews’ most important feasts because it reminded the Jews how God had freed their people from slavery in Egypt. During this Passover celebration, Jesus talked to His disciples about who He is and what was going to happen to Him. Jesus knew that soon He would be arrested and killed. And even though His death and resurrection were part of God’s great plan to bring forgiveness for sins, some of the things Jesus said worried the disciples.

What did Jesus say in John 14:1 that might have wor-ried the disciples? Isn’t that the way it always is? Someone says, “Now don’t get upset, but . . .” and you

KNOW you’re going to be upset. But Jesus was trying to prepare His disciples for some big changes. The events that would

soon take place would completely overwhelm the disciples if they weren’t ready.

“I’m going back to My Father’s house to get ready for your arrival,” Jesus said. “Then, when all is ready, I will come back and take you with Me. You already know the way to where I am going.”

Of course, the disciples were upset by this news that Jesus would be leaving them. One of the disciples, Thomas—never one to keep his doubts to himself—asked a question.

Read John 14:5 to find out what Thomas asked. How did Jesus answer Thomas in verse 6? Certainly the disciples were familiar with the fact that Jesus had been teaching them the right way to live. But Jesus was saying more than that. Jesus was explain-ing that believing in Him was the only way for people to come to know God. In fact, Jesus went on to say, “If you really knew who I am, you’d know that I have shown you what God is like.”

Then another disciple spoke to Jesus. Read what Philip said in John 14:8. How did Jesus respond to Philip in verse 9? Jesus wanted Philip and the other disciples—and

all His followers from then until now—to know that He and God are one. Because Jesus is God’s Son, He is the only person who can show us what God is like and make it possible for us to know God. When we believe, or have faith, in Jesus, we can become members of God’s family.

Jesus called Himself “the way” because He makes it pos-sible for us to become part of God’s family. Jesus called Himself “the truth” because His teachings about God are

true and dependable. Jesus called Himself “the life” because He gives us life forever as members of God’s family.

You might have questions, just as the people in Bible times did, about who Jesus is. As you read and think about God’s Word, how-ev-er, God promises to help you understand more about Jesus. One important thing we can all know and understand about Jesus is that His life and death did all that was necessary for us to receive a place in God’s family.

(Show Lesson 4 Poster.) Let’s check out the map on the Lesson 4 Poster to find the road to take to receive a place in God’s family. (Guide volunteers to find and read aloud from their Bibles verses listed on the poster.) God’s free gift of forgiveness makes it possible for us to become part of God’s family and live as God’s children.

On Palm Sunday the crowds praised Jesus because they hoped He was the Savior sent from God. Today we can praise God and thank Him, not only for sending Jesus to Earth, but also for His gift of grace that makes our salvation possible. (Talk with interested students about becoming members of God’s family, referring to “Leading a Student to Christ” on p. 105.)

Materials Bibles, large index cards, marker, three containers (shoe boxes, waste baskets, large bowls, etc.), large sheet of butcher paper, tape, small paper plates.

PreparationWrite the following words or phrases in large letters on separate index cards: “Thank You,” “gift” “grace,” “undeserved,” “salvation,” “possible,” “the cross,” “Jesus,” “forgiveness,” “sins” and “God’s family.” Place a few cards in each container. Place containers in different places around the playing area. Tape butcher paper on an open wall in the classroom. Place roll of tape on floor near paper.

Procedure1. Students stand several feet from a container. Students take turns tossing a paper plate toward container. When a paper plate lands in a container, student retrieves a card from the container and lightly tapes the card onto the butcher paper. Repeat with other containers.

2. Once all cards are retrieved and taped to the paper, invite stu-dents to work together to create a class prayer using the words on the cards to thank God for His gifts of grace and salvation. Write the prayer on the paper, rearranging cards on the paper and filling in

words to make sentences.

3. Use the discussion questions to lead students in further discussing God’s grace.

Materials Bibles, raffia, scissors, measuring stick, card stock, markers, mask-ing tape, craft glue.

preparationCut raffia into 3-foot (.9-m) lengths, three for each students.

Procedure1. Students fold card stock to make cards. Inside cards, students write prayers, thanking God for His grace. Use the discussion questions to help students think of prayers.

2. Give each student three lengths of raffia. Students tie ends of three lengths of raffia together in a knot, leaving a 1-inch (2.5-cm) tail above knot (see sketch a).

3. Each student tapes tail of knot onto a hard surface and loosely braids lengths until about 4 inches (10 cm) are left (see sketch b). Student ties knot at end of braid and holds both ends of braid together to form a fish shape (see sketch c). Student uses craft glue to attach to front of card. Trim ends to leave a small fringe. Students take home cards as reminders to praise God for His grace.

Additional informationIn the days of the Early Church, a person could have been killed for being a Christian. So Christians used a secret symbol, so they would know when they were talking to other Christians. This symbol was a fish drawn with two simple arches. When talking with a person, a Christian would draw an arch on the ground with his or her foot. If the other person drew the other arch, then both people would know they were talking to another Christian. The Greek word for fish, ich-thus, was an acrostic for “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.”teaching tip

Students create individual prayers from the words collected. Provide stationery and a vari-ety of pens and markers for students to use in writing prayers.
