Developing independence, excellence and a creative spirit

WelcomeRussell BRooke – PRinciPal of long Bay college

At Long Bay College, our mission is to prepare students for a successful life and we do so by focusing on developing independence, excellence and a creative spirit.

WelcomeExcellence is a goal for all and is evident in many forms. You will see from our Achievement Reports that academic excellence is a foundation of our school.

You will also find that our school culture is one in which young men and women can grow up to be independent and develop their own values. As a school community, our responsibility is to prepare our students for full citizenship with the same sense of excellence that we hold for academic pursuit.

Participation in sports, arts, clubs and events is something that we encourage and expect. We know that

engagement with the school and its teachers in these areas contributes to academic excellence. By limiting our roll to under 1800 students, we ensure that students have the opportunities to shine and be noticed. This is hugely important for growing youngsters.

Our school has a wide range of academic subjects with highly trained teachers who contribute a creative spirit to the wider school life with flair and passion. Long Bay College’s facilities and campus are world-class. Our academic results are some of the best in New Zealand and our scholarship results are outstanding. Our sports High Performance

Programme is facilitating record numbers of students competing at local, national and international representative level.

As our children enter adulthood they need to be able to work with others, stand tall and speak well, to be confident, positive and enjoy life, to work hard and to excel. This is the modern education that students and families of Long Bay College appreciate and enjoy. Ours is a unique culture – one that we value and of which we are proud.

Long Bay College is a co-educational state secondary school (Years 9–13) with approximately 1650 students. Located in a beautiful setting on Auckland’s North Shore, the school has spacious grounds, with good transport links to the Auckland city centre (25 minutes) and Auckland International Airport (45 minutes).

BRonWyn (Head giRl)

As an accelerate student from Year nine, I have aimed always to achieve excellence in my studies, gaining both NCEA Level 1 and Level 2 with excellence. This year I am finishing my third year of Chemistry, Biology and Physical Education aiming to complete Level 3 with excellence while also sitting three scholarship papers in English, Geography and Physical Education at the end of this year. During my five years at Long Bay College I have developed a love for knowledge which I hope to carry into my time at University where I plan to study either Medicine or English Literature.

“I HAvE DEvELOPED A LOvE FOR kNOWLEDGE”

micHaH (Head Boy)

Long Bay College has been a door leading to many more doors. I came here in Year 9 from a small country school and my eyes were opened wide to the many opportunities offered to me. Long Bay College has let me hone my sports skills and I now play in the 1st Xv. During my five years I have developed my leadership skills and I now have the role of Head Boy which I love.

“MY EYES WERE OPENED WIDE TO THE MANY OPPORTUNITIES OFFERED TO ME”

I’ve been at Long Bay College for the past five years, and the best thing about it for me is the number of different ways I’ve been able to get involved in school life. I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in a number of different music groups and the 1st XI hockey team. This year, our Big Band is travelling to Australia for the Melbourne Jazz Festival, and it’s been really great to be a part of the growth of the Music Department and for us to have become increasingly competitive with other schools on the Shore.

I joined Long Bay College this year. I came from Northcross Intermediate school and I’ve made lots of friends here. I’d never done Media before but it was one of the subjects that I wanted to do and it’s now my favourite subject. I’m learning a lot more about computer programs. I’ve just learnt how to use Powerpoint and at the moment we’re making a 45 second trailer for an eight minute film which the senior students made. Having senior students help us in class is really cool.

jacky (yeaR 13)

I started Media last year and I was selected to be a ‘Super User’ along with seven other students. Being a ‘Super User’ means that I train younger students on the media programmes i.e. the Adobe Suite. I love Media and plan to study it as a subject at university when I leave school. My Media teacher is my favourite teacher as she keeps pushing us to the best of our ability and gives us good advice.

Long Bay College has a well-deserved reputation for excellence in the Arts. We take great pride in our widely-acknowledged tradition of excellence in Graphics and Design, visual Arts and Performing Arts. With creativity being a cornerstone of the school’s ethos, students are encouraged to explore the passion of their choice with the support of well-trained specialist staff and purpose-built facilities.

The Music Department is really nice and the teachers are very kind. I’ve been playing the piano for ten years and my advice to other students is they should start playing an instrument when they’re young as it’s much easier then. I’m in the ‘piano trio’ and I hope to join the chamber orchestra at school.

“I’M IN THE ‘PIANO TRIO’ AND I HOPE TO JOIN THE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA AT SCHOOL.”

My time at Long Bay College has provided me with invaluable experiences which I know I will carry with me into my future career. I’ve performed at the Aotea Centre for Stage Challenge, travelled to Dunedin to take part in the National Shakespeare in Schools production and I have participated in two school productions. I am a person who likes to achieve his goals and Long Bay College has always provided me with tools to achieve them.

“I AM A PERSON WHO LIkES TO ACHIEvE HIS GOALS AND LONG BAY COLLEGE HAS ALWAYS PROvIDED ME WITH TOOLS TO ACHIEvE THEM.”

A strong sporting programme promotes individual pride and school spirit. We encourage participation and excellence by supporting a wide range of codes. The Sportworks complex, including the popular climbing wall, is the hub of the College’s commitment to keeping our students active and healthy.

sina (sPoRts caPtain)

I’ve been here since Year 9 and came from Northcross Intermediate School. There are two Sports Captains, Isak and me, and we aim to get all students to try something new and to get involved. At the beginning of the school year we went to all the Year 9 classes and gave the students information on all of the sports available at school. We help to organise events such as the Athletics Day in February and we went with our top athletics students to the North Harbour Secondary Schools Athletics Tournament. This week we have organised a handball match between the school prefects and some of the international students and next term we are planning a football match with the international students.

“WE AIM TO GET ALL STUDENTS TO TRY SOMETHING NEW AND TO GET INvOLvED.”

tHomas (yeaR 12)

I play beach volleyball and indoor volleyball. I represented New Zealand at the Australian Beach volleyball Championships in Adelaide at the Trans-Tasman Series in January and came home with a silver medal. At school we have been training three times a week for indoor volleyball. The coach Alex puts heaps of pressure on us. I really like pressure because it makes me play better.

InternationalStudents

Every year, international students (aged 13–18) are welcomed from a wide range of countries including: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, Slovakia, South korea, Spain,Taiwan and Thailand. Some students stay for one or two terms (three to six months) whilst others study at Long Bay College long term to graduate.

On arrival at school all international students undertake an Orientation Programme and are tested in English language ability. Please note that timetables for international students are dependent on the student’s English language ability, previous level of study in the chosen subjects and availability of space in each class. All international students are encouraged to enjoy the full range of academic, sporting and cultural activities available to all students at Long Bay College.

We have an experienced team of staff in the International Department who look after international students’ pastoral and academic needs.

I was recommended to come to Long Bay College because it’s a very good school. My favourite subject is ESOL, my teacher is really nice and my English has improved during the time I’ve been here. Everyone is very friendly and I have made some great friends. I love the school’s location and the environment with its big open spaces. During weekends I meet my friends and go shopping and occasionally go horse riding with my host family.

I came to Long Bay College to improve my English and to study in New Zealand. My subjects are Mathematics, English, ESOL, Art, Social Studies, PE and Science. I enjoy the sport here at the College and my favourite subject is PE because I like physical activity. During weekends I play Basketball and meet my friends.

I had an amazing and unforgettable year at Long Bay College. I enjoyed interesting and new subjects such as Drama, Photography, Business Studies and Economics. After school, I participated in the large range of co-curricular activities Long Bay College offers: the Chamber Orchestra, Concert Band, Choir, Touch, Rugby, Badminton and Basketball. I made many great friends during my time at Long Bay College and can say that this was the most exciting and fun year I’ve ever had.
