Beach since 1948.

Presidents’ Letter

Happy fall!

We are so excited to be serving as co-presidents of the Long Beach alumnae chapter. First, we want to extend our

warmest thanks to our past-president, Marlene Mourtzikos, for her wonderful leadership over the years and for ensuring

a smooth transition for us.

Last year was a great year and our chapter was once again recognized by Delta Gamma as a Five Star Alumnae

Success chapter for outstanding programming, leadership and operation. We are looking forward to another

outstanding year!

We had our first board meeting on September 10th where we discussed our goals and programming for the upcoming

year. Some highlights include Service for Sight, volunteering at the Long Beach Veterans Hospital on the 3rd Thursday

of every month, our Traditional Holiday Party & Auction in December and Founders Day on March 13th at the Center at

Sycamore Plaza in Lakewood where we celebrated last year.

Delta Gamma has enriched our mother-daughter relationship for the last few decades and we never imagined that we

would have an opportunity to share the presidency of the Long Beach Delta Gamma

alumnae chapter. It means the world to us that we have been entrusted with this

role and we are so excited to see all of you at our fun events included in this

newsletter!

We are looking forward to catching up and seeing many longtime friends and

making some new ones.

DIVE IN & GET

INVOLVED!

to make a difference. If you have an

office, or giving a sister a ride, please

contact us at

[email protected]

We look forward to hearing from you!

Delta Gamma Foundation Focus

It is a new year to DO GOOD! Be thinking of ways to show people with whom you come into contact (your family members, neighbors, co-workers, and strangers) small acts of kindness. No matter how big or small your thoughtful acts may be, they will make someone else smile or to be encouraged, and you will be smiling, too.

A simple DO GOOD act will be to collect General Mills’ Box Tops for Education and Campbell’s Labels for Education. Bring them to any Long Beach Delta Gamma Alumnae meeting (look for the turquoise basket) and they will be sent to the Blind Children’s Center. Please also save your old eyeglasses. Turn those into the basket at each meeting and they will be given to the Lion’s Club to be recycled for needy children and adults in developing nations.

We are continuing with our emphasis on Joining Forces - Service for Sight. Join us on the third Thursday of each month to serve our visually impaired Veterans at the Veterans Administration. We meet at 5:45pm and walk the veterans to the Community Living Center to assist them getting dinner and playing BINGO.

Two upcoming events:

Let’s DO GOOD!

Sharon Eastman - vp Foundation

On Friday, October 16, the Blind Rehabilitation Center (BRC) at the Veterans Administration is putting on a White Cane Walk to raise awareness about those who are visually impaired utilizing

white canes. The full walk is on the VA complex. We need volunteers from 10am to 1pm to act as guides during the walk and

lunch. Please contact Marlene or me if you can participate.

“Do Good” Retail Therapy, Saturday, October 24, Sandy Potter is again allowing us to shop early at her terrific women’s clothing and

gift store and donating 10% of all net sales to the Delta Gamma Foundation. Last spring she donated $100 in our name.

Her store is Atelier Femme, 1033 East Green St., Pasadena, CA 91106. We can shop at 9:30am and all day.

Gamma Chi held another successful and exciting recruitment this September. A total of 91 girls chose to attend preference night, 55 were welcomed on board, and two were

legacies!

A handful of Long Beach Alumnae provided snacks, waters, and a helping hand during

recruitment school and a night of recruitment.

Congratulations Gamma Chi, and welcome to our newest Pi Alphas!

PUMPKIN SPICE SYRUP

3/4 cups water 3/4 cup brown sugar, unpacked

1/4 cup pumpkin puree

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg 3 dashes cloves

DIRECTIONS: Combine water and brown sugar in a small

saucepan over medium heat. Stir until sugar has dissolved

and reduce heat to low. Add spices and pumpkin puree,

stirring until well combined. Simmer for 5 minutes and then

strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer. Store in an

air tight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks–just

be sure to give the syrup a good shake as it will separate while sitting in the fridge.

To make your own Pumpkin Spice Lattes, add 2-3

tablespoons of syrup to freshly brewed espresso and stir

well. Pour steamed or frothed milk into the mug and sprinkle with a dash of cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice.
