Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa barakatuh

My Dear Respected Elders, Brothers and Sisters

I am very grateful to Almighty Allah (SWT) and the members of SLIA for having the confidence in me to lead this great organisation for the 2nd year, which Alhamdulillah has been in existence this year for 45 years.

One of our main priorities this year is to continue helping the communities in Sri Lanka as well as serving the needs of our membership and the British community here in the UK. Alhamdulillah, thanks to the efforts of our hard working teams, our most generous sponsors and donors we currently have almost £62,000 in the charity account, of which £44,000 is earmarked for legacy projects in Sri Lanka. Sister Ishreen, now Chair of Charity Sub-committee and with Haleem Ossman’s vital assistance shall continue helping, monitoring and reviewing these projects as well as implementing our new projects in Sri Lanka. Please read the Charity Report for details of projects and current status.

At the AGM in April, I mentioned our intention this year to continue working on the constitution, which needs to be updated to align with the activities we are presently undertaking. Insha’ Allah I shall formally establish a process and time scales to ensure completion this year.

My other priorities include the Building extension project and to ensure that we have a functioning website. As you are all aware, we embarked on the building extension project last year, and my sincere thanks to Bro Jezri Mohideen who is leading on this and, for all his efforts so far. Please read Building Sub-committee report for current status on this.

We shall continue to actively engage with other Sri Lankan Muslim Organisations to bring about a common understanding so that we enjoy the sense of ‘togetherness’ especially in our common activities.

The ExCo and I seek your help to ensure that our event programme is successful, which can only be achieved Insha’ Allah through your continued support and participation. Please do join us and support our worthy fund raising causes to enable us to continue providing assistance to those in need of our help.

If you wish to be a volunteer and offer assistance at our events please do contact any of the ExCo team. This is ‘Your Association’ so let’s all work together for you, us and ‘our family’.

I would like to take this opportunity to stress the importance of ‘unity amongst the community’ and to remember the true teachings of Islam: love, peace, learning and progression. As we prepare for the month of Ramadan May Almighty Allah (SWT) shower His Blessings upon you and your families.

Was Salaam Jazal Marzook, President of SLIA

Current Status

By the Grace of Almighty Allah we are pleased to announce that the SLIA Centre continues to be rented and the closing balance as at 19th May 2017 is £45,439.36

The Sub-committee formulated and presented a comprehensive plan for the future of the SLIA building at the AGM on the 9th April 2017. Masha ‘Allah the floor agreed that the Sub-committee should continue with the rear extension plan both to enhance the building value and the rental income.

The Current proposal is to extend the top floor space all the way back and to build an extended commercial space in the basement. This should enable the SLIA to increase the rental income considerably and most importantly to enhance the commercial value of the building. This should narrow the funding gap to purchase a more spacious SLIA Centre.

Inshaa Allah we expect a decision from Ealing council planning department at the end of May. At which point, based on the outcome, we will come back to the membership with a detailed costing for the building extension project. Any members who wish to track the progress of the planning application can do so by following the link below:

https://pam.ealing.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=dates&keyVal=ON7IBEJMLZ700

If there is any volunteers who wish to contribute to the building extension plan please feel free to contact any of the ExCo or Sub-committee members.

Communications Sub-committee Report

As per our previous update, the current site, slia.org.uk, seems to have some of the functionality which we are seeking but the coding will need to be looked at to see if it needs to be rebuilt or can be amended to have fully desired functionality.

We are now in the process of talking to various vendors to get quotes for prices in order to tender the work to upgrade slia.org.uk. The key elements we are looking at with vendors will be the most cost effective solutions and value for money along with the best vendor that can offer after development support to assist with future developments of the website in the future.

We currently have one quote of £4,617 from the vendor, Raw Media Group. A second quote from a developer, 121 Web Developers quoting £3,999. Completion times of this work would be expected to be between 4 – 6 weeks.

We are also currently liaising with a third developer for a quote, Total Creations, with whom we are exploring two options. Firstly, a pre made template and then customize with our images and content -from our initial consultations, customization costs are £299 for up to 6 pages and £499 for up to 10 pages. The second option being explored is the total overhaul of the current website, which would require more investigation, and costs are estimated to be in excess of £2,000. As the costs are very favourable by using a pre made template, further investigation and consultations are on-going to get a final full cost of this option. Completion time of work with Total Creation would be expected to be between 3 – 4 weeks.

When we have a set of finalised quotes and option this will be put together and presented to the ExCo

team with a recommended course of action for the development of slia.org.uk, taking into the pros and

cons of each option. This will be discussed at the next ExCo meeting.

SLIA Events: Halara 25th March 2017

Alhamdulillah SLIA held its annual Halara at Harrow Mosque. The event was well attended and we were blessed to have Shaykh Muhammed Arramdani as our guest. The Halara was conducted by Iqbal Ossmann and Shamique Ismail and lifted everyone’s spirits. Shaykh Arramdani preceded a heart moving dua with a sohbat on the life, khalwat and contribution of Imam Shaykh Abu al-Hasan ash-Shadhili - including the way Imam Shadhili guided his students to make a soul Jihad (jihad-ul-nafs) and how fighting our ego makes our life sweet.

We were treated to a menu of Kaliamandu Shoru prepared by our ExCo wives, sisters and dear aunties: a special thanks must go to Aunties Kadji, Ilham and Risnia and Thirimeze, Inshrah Fazal, Azmi, Yushani, Shabina and Manjula for helping make the meal so delicious and enjoyable. Photos and videos of the Halara in March and Dhikr in February are also available on the SLIA Facebook page.

The SLIA Charity Sub-committee activities this year build on the excellent work carried out during 2016. Below is a brief update on our focus projects for this year:

Ramadan Dry Rations:

We were inspired by your donations to support our sponsored villages during Ramadan last year, so plan to repeat the appeal again this year insha’ Allah. Please do refer to the information published separately in this newsletter for specific opportunities to help our Sri Lankan brethren participate in the fasting and remember to send in your donation form and contribution back as early as possible to ensure the funds reach Volunteer Organisation for Social Development (VOSD) in good time.

Legacy Projects: Neeravipitty Village Capacity Building Initiatives:

School Building Project

The building project to enable sustainable out of school educational facilities for Neeravipitty Village is progressing with the preparation of trust documents to ensure good governance. This is a long term project for which the SLIA has been blessed to receive a large donation of over £20,000 from one of our members. May Allah’s blessings always be with him and his family insha’ Allah.

Water/Toilets Project

Approximately £24,000 of funds raised for the toilets project currently remain in the charity account to also be applied to pilot the provision of water directly to the toilets and hence make the facilities more usable for the residents.

Muslim Aid/Syria Project:

The 5K walk in Regents Park was well attended and everyone had a wonderful time Alhamdulillah. A very respectable sum of £17k has been collected so far. We plan to hand over the funds to Muslim Aid at our Eid-ul-Adha dinner insha’ Allah.

The Inscribe Hope for Syria project is still underway and finishes on 30th June 2017. We look forward to our budding writers and artists – young and old submitting their articles and artwork for the book. Entries to the Inscribe Hope campaign should be submitted online at the Muslim Aid website. The cost of each entry is £20 and is paid online at the time the entry is submitted. Entries will be collated into a commemorative book. For more details on the rules please visit:

https://www.muslimaid.org/opportunities/events/inscribe-hope---art-&-writing-competition/

Visiting our elders during Ramadan:

Following an innovative suggestion to acknowledge and celebrate our more elderly and less mobile members during Ramadan, the ExCo is planning to visit and spend some time meeting and chatting with those who have contributed so much to the foundation and growth or our SLIA insha’ Allah. Please do let our secretary know if there is anyone you would like us to include in this project – and indeed if you would like to join us in making these visits by email to: [email protected].

SLIA Ramadan Appeal 2017 All praise to the Almighty Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

Assalamu alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabaraktuh

My Dear Respected Elders, Brothers and Sisters in Islam

“Those who spend their wealth [in Allah's way] by night and by day, secretly and publicly - they will have their reward with their Lord. And no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.”

[Surah Al-Baqarah 2:274]

With the above verse, we start opening our hearts and doors to the blessed month of the Ramadan. This is the time for sharing, giving and humbling ourselves towards our Creator, who has blessed this month of mercy and opened the door of the heavens for His creation to ask for His mercy for our mistakes in this Dunya.

Alhamdulillah, as always the SLIA’s help towards the underprivileged continues, reaching new milestones. Insha’ Allah through your generous contributions the SLIA intend to help the following causes:

Ramadan food distribution programme

1. Hambantota – Tsunami Village: The feeding of 155 families with dry food rations at

RS 5,000 per family with a view to Insha’ Allah help our Muslim brothers and sisters to be

in a position to participate in Ramadan along with us all. This is equivalent to a total of

£4,193 at the current exchange rate.

2. Hambantota – Tsunami Village local mosque: The construction of the mosque is

not complete and halted due to the lack of funds. The mosque has areas for prayers,

religious activities and during the month of Ramadan, khanji is distributed to the people

in the area from donations. This year they have asked to contribute towards the Khanji

distribution programme - the provision of khanji for 10 days is estimated at RS 6,000 per

day. This is equivalent to a total of £316 at the current exchange rate.

3. Mullaithivu – Neeravipitty Village: The feeding of 150 families with dry rations and

including packaging and distribution costs is estimated at RS 6,000 per family. This is

equivalent to a total of £4,737 at the current exchange rate.

Insha’ Allah we are also actively seeking other avenues to raise funds towards helping the Kolonnawa district victims and with your help and support shall donate all funds received in excess of our target of £9.25k to the Kolonnawa rehabilitation projects. So as we beseech The Almighty to allow us to experience Ramadan with our hearts and souls, may Almighty Allah also reward you for your generosity. We invite the holy month to come into our lives and expunge our sins for the last eleven months. Insha’ Allah may the efforts of the SLIA members bring much needed assistance to our brothers and sisters struggling in our Motherland.

Muslim Aid -Syria Fund Appeal:

‘Walk for Syria’ By Zuleikha Cassim

Assalamualaikum Alaikum my dear readers,

I would like to thank Allah the Al Aziz, the Al Malik for all that he has given. All that I write that is good is from Him, and that which is mistaken is from me.

I ask Allah to send his choicest blessings to our beloved Rasool (SAW). I ask that we meet His Beloved in Akhira and Rasool (SAW) knows each of us by name and he is so very pleased to see us all. Ameen.

Alhamdulillah let me start by saying what an amazing journey it has been for the four of us ladies who were organising the Walk for Syria event on behalf of the SLIA and Muslim Aid.

Allah the Almighty has truly blessed us with this opportunity to carry out this event. Next to Allah we thank you, the membership, for the immense support you have shown towards this event, making us so proud to be part of this collective organisation, the SLIA.

The 5K Walk for Syria took place on 1 April 2017 on a cloudy Spring day, which was just right for the 5k walk. The organisation team set up camp within the Outer Circle of Regents Park at 11am, and greeted walkers with boxed-up picnic lunch food parcels from Mo’s Caterers (Stanmore), and Muslim Aid goody bags and t-shirts. We had also organised 20 marshals to help the walkers safely find their way around the route, per Regent’s Park Management health and safety requirements.

Our first set of 12 walkers commenced the 5K walk at 12.30 pm, excited by the knowledge that they were carrying this out to help the brothers and sisters suffering in Syria. Each group of walkers was

given a map, bottles of water and Mars bars to keep them energised.

During the walk, adults and children were kept occupied with a treasure hunt as well as opportunities to see some of the animals in London Zoo. Having passed the BT Tower and the beautiful Regents Park Mosque, the walkers found themselves in a charming garden, followed by a trail around a lake with views of ducks, swans and geese diving and playing in the water.

Each group of walkers had a different experience to speak of and each of them shared stories on their return from the walk, while having their well deserved break and picnic lunch.

From 4 years old to 70 years old, they all walked the 5k and the Walk for Syria team would like to thank each and every one of them for attending this worthy event. Each of the proud walkers received a certificate and all the children received a goody bag filled with chocolates to enjoy.

I would now like to bring you back to the reasons behind this walk. When we first started organising this event, we were worried that we would be unable to collect the funds on time when they were most needed by those suffering from lack of medical aid in Syria. We did not think that ordinary families in Syria would end up suffering any more than they already had: parents losing not one child but several; children losing the hope to have a future, a family, or just a roof over their heads. But we now find that it has got worse and families who have lost all are now being attacked by chemical weapons.

Allah all Wise, is the most Merciful and has reasons behind all that happens. For us, safe from aerial bombs in the UK, I feel it is a test of Faith of how much we will give up for our Ummah, knowing that Allah (SWT) is the Provider. I can say that by the help of the Almighty, you have been very generous and hardworking towards the people of Syria. With your help we have been able to collect over £17,000 towards our £20,000 pledge for medical equipment for Syrian hospitals to treat the victims of barrel bombing.

Well done to you all for this unprecedented achievement in SLIA fundraising history. May Allah (SWT) reward all of us for this beautiful donation during Syria’s time of great need.

Finally, I ask you to take part in Inscribe Hope, SLIA’s other Syria fund-raising project, which is currently running and insha’ Allah aims to fulfil the £20,000 pledge to provide necessary medical equipment to Syria’s barrel bomb victims.

Inscribe Hope is the Writing & Art Campaign for children and adults on the themes of Hope, Blessings or Thankfulness, which has had its

deadline for entries extended to 30 June 2017 to raise more money during the Blessed month of Ramadan.

Entries to the Inscribe Hope campaign should be submitted online at the Muslim Aid website. The cost of each entry is £20 and is paid online at the time the entry is submitted. Entries will be collated into a commemorative book.
