London Museums

We took a tour threw the National Gallery. We got to see several exhibitions, from classical art to contemporary art!

Victoria Albert Museum

• At the Victoria Albert Museum we went on a private tour of the Performing Arts exhibit including costumes, props, and scenic design models.

Natural History Museum

Science Museum

With the British Museum’s free admission, we were able to explore two million years of world history. We also enjoyed drinking British High Tea and eating delicious scones!

Tate Modern

• Contemporary Art – Paintings, Sculptures

and Photography

• 1900s Impressionism – Present

• Some artists included Jeff Koones and Andy Warhol

Theatre Tours

The National Theater is a large theater in London that has 3 different performance spaces. We saw 2 shows here; Our Class and Pains of Youth, though they were both in the same theater. The National is very well known in London, it would be a space in New York that held Off-Broadway shows. The construction of this building was aided by the Arts Council which is applicable to the NEA in the United States.

The Royal Opera House produces several types of art such as: Ballet, Opera, new works, educational programs, and art collections. It even has a separate viewing booth for the Queen!

Bush Theatre• Before the production

at the Bush Theatre we met and spoke with heads of production as well as fundraising about the operation of the Bush Theatre.

The Arcola Theatre:A “fringe” theatre, equivalent to our Off-Broadway showing a wide variety of theatre from new writing to classic drama, music, and comedy. The space itself is well known as a very industrial space with an outside café.

The Globe Theatre

• First built in 1599, where Shakespeare worked and wrote many of his greatest plays

• Theatre season runs from April to October

• Seats an audience of 350,000 plus a section for standing room

• The building is a replica of the original site

Theatrical Productions

The Stefan Golaszewski Plays

First play we saw in London at the Bush Theatre. One man show telling stories of his life.

Our Class, a play by Tadeusz Slobodzianek, was produced at The National Theatre. It tells the story of a group of school children, Jewish and Catholic, and their memories of living in Poland in 1925 to the present.

Oliver was the musical we saw in the West End. The theater itself was amazing and the show had amazing scenery as well as actors of all ages.

War Horse was a production that tells the passionate story about a boy and his horse. Not only does the show have incredible stage effects, but uses puppets as some of it’s most captivating characters.

Pains of Youth

Our final production of the trip was an obscure play called Pains of Youth at the National Theatre in the smallest black box theatre about the trials of youth at the time.

Tourist Attractions

Kensington Palace was where Princess Diana lived. This was a big tourist attraction because everyone loved Princess Diana. The palace was huge inside, and it was beautiful. They have converted a major portion of the once residence into a museum for the public with various exhibits including one on Diana.

Westminster Abbey

• A tourist attraction we all attended was Westminster Abbey of which we got to go on an audio tour around the various sections of the Abbey.

Buckingham Palace and the Changing of the Guard:The Palace is about four times the size of Main Hall and even has several gift shops attached to it. The Changing of the Guard happens daily and consists of a ceremony and Royal Band playing. There are guards absolutely everywhere surround the palace and they’ll reprimand you if you get too close! God save the Queen!

We viewed Big Ben and Houses of Parliament as one of our tourist attractions and most memorable and iconic of our EYH trip.

We each had an assignment to seek out various theatre and arts school in London and visit the locations in pairs. This gave us a chance to explore London and explore university like our own.

Harrods is the Macy’s of London! It has the most exquisite fashion brands and stores. We had cappuccino and and saw the giant cafeteria located in the store. It looks like a palace inside.

• Important services have included the funerals of Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington and Sir Winston Churchill; Jubilee celebrations for Queen Victoria

The Neue Galerie• Displays early twentieth-century German and Austrian art and design on the first two floors. The third floor displays German art representing various movements from the early 20th century such as he Blaue Reiter and its circle (Vasily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, August Macke, Franz Marc, Gabriele Münter)

Roundabout Theatre The Roundabout Theatre Company is the leading non-profit theatre company based in NYC. We met with the Education Associate and several interns and discussed what their job entails and learned that internships are the best way to get experience! We even got some details from from the intern who was helping plan Stephen Sondheim’s 80th Birthday Gala at the Roundabout!

• The New Museum is a museum of new work by American and International Artists, with an emphasis on innovation in a variety of media. It is located in SoHo, and the building itself is really cool to look at, like shown in the picture.
