Schubert Symphony No. 5Mozart Clarinet Concerto, K622Beethoven Symphony No. 6 Pastoral

Michael Collins is one of world’s best clarinettists andaccording to The Daily Telegraph Mozart’s ClarinetConcerto is in good hands: “This is a fineperformance of Mozart’s beloved concerto, Collinsusing the proper basset clarinet, creating somebeautiful woody sounds, and touching the depths inthe adagio.” Schubert’s Fifth Symphony, writtenwhen the composer was only 19, is a work stronglyinfluenced by Haydn and Mozart. Beethoven’sPastoral Symphony dramatically depicts throughmusic a day in the countryside, with gentle pastoralscenes of spring and summer finally interrupted by alate-night thunderstorm – the perfect refuge from theBritish winter.

Conductor Owain Arwel HughesCello Thomas Carroll

Beethoven Egmont OvertureHaydn Cello Concerto in CBeethoven Symphony No. 3 Eroica

Some works have defined music history andBeethoven’s Eroica Symphony is one of them.It marked a turning point in symphonic writing andset the bar for symphonic composition. The piecealso reflects history as Beethoven originally gave itthe title “Bonaparte” as a tribute to Napoleon, whomhe admired. On hearing that Napoleon had beenmade Emperor of France, however, the composerchanged his mind, and furiously scribbled out thededication so fiercely that he made a hole in the frontof the score. This dramatic work is preceded byHaydn’s Cello Concerto in C, performed byThomas Carroll, a finalist of the BBC’s YoungMusician of the Year competition.
