Victoria is the fastest growing state in Australia and is expected to support at least 10 million people by 2051, with 8 million living in Melbourne, not far off London’s anticipated population of 11 million by 2050. Both cities face complex challenges as they plan and build for this growth, most critically how they can ensure this growth is sustainable and enhances ‘liveability’.

Currently, Melbourne consistently ranks very high as the world’s most liveable city, yet London rarely features in the top forty. What in fact makes a liveable city? What can London learn about Melbourne’s liveability? What are the benefits of this metric?

A key component of Melbourne’s growth strategy is ‘living locally’, ensuring citizens have the ability to meet most of their everyday needs within a 20-minute walk, cycle or local public transport trip of their home. In London, the ambition for 80% of all journeys to be made by walking, cycling or public transport is driving good growth in the city’s neighbourhoods. Is this the true nature of liveabilty? Does this create a sustainable and egalitarian city of the future?

This International Dialogue invites discussion between these two major cities on what makes their city liveable and how they are looking ahead to ensure growth serves those who live and work in the city.

This event is a key part of the NLA International Programme which brings together cities for discussion and debate.
