A New Day

Often times, beginnings are associated with chaos and loss. They seem to always be followed by a period of confusion and fear. For, I know these were my thoughts as I transitioned from Vice President of the IP board to President of the 2015-2016 Board of LOHS Key Club. Now, I did not have a sense of fear because I doubted my fellow officers; however, I assumed the set back was simply a part of the cycle.

Sure enough, there have been a small number of difficulties, such as member attendance or communication with vendors. However, the board I serve has proven that beginnings are also a time to improve.

Since our inauguration, we have already revised our website due to the work of our lovely Public Relations officer. We have held many successful fundraisers due to our wonderful Fundraising Chair and properly planned the use of said funds because of the renewed Treasury Report from our brilliant Treasurer. Our devoted Event Coordinator had assured that there would be a plethora of events, while our swift Division Chair has kept the board and club updated with Kiwanis and Division information. As well, our amazing Secretary already has one early-bird MRF submitted and has coherently organized all member hours, while our eccentric Historian has already begun to assemble a magnificent newsletter. Finally, the outstanding Vice President has created many officer meeting agendas, helped oversee progress of the officers and club, and contributed ideas for the GOALs of the upcoming year.

As can be seen, LOHS Key Club started on a roll due to the hard work of the new officers and the consistent support of the members. From here, we have large plans in store and I am confident that we shall continue to accomplish more.

DCON 2015

3

My DCON ExperienceDCON was amazing, to sum it up. In the beginning of DCON, I was

faced with a lot of stress in the beginning as we struggled to organize ourselves, get the registration packets, and sign ourselves up as delegates and SAAs. It was a rush, and I needed to slow down and enjoy DCON. After everything worked out, we started to loosen up and look for our friends. We made many reunifications and created new friendships. I saw the spirit in the room. People really showed off their love of service, and their dedication to their club, division, and district. It was incredible. The workshops were just amazing as well. They offered insightful advice on the leadership of clubs, to Key Leader. Service Expo and College Expo were also interesting, as I got to see what other people have set up and want us to know!

Delegating was also a very serious but interesting task. The leadership of the District, and potentially the International board was in our hands, and we were deciding who we would work with this next term. After a period of speeches, questions and introductions, we voted. We chose who would lead the California-Nevada-Hawaii District in the 2015-2016 term. What other club on campus does that?

Lastly, the tears. As awards and scholarships were given, I took the time to think about what I’d done this past term, as well as what I can work on the next term. I was fortunate enough, with the help of our secretary, to achieve a Gold level MRP. Our club won awards as well! I got to see how much I had grown. From the introverted freshman with the 12 total hours, to the involved Division Chair, as a sophomore, with 200 hours. What a change has Key Club made in my life! It has allowed me to become the person I am now, feeding my desire to help people, and establishing certain friendships that have guided me out of the deep times. Key Club has allowed me to be spirited, to be open about how much I love to serve, and to see how much that warm feeling in your heart after you’ve helped someone means to me. I love Key Club. And DCON just helped close that door of 14-15, and open the door to new heights in 2015-16.

I got a bit off topic, but DCON showed me how much I really do love Key Club, and how much of an impact I’ve had on others, and on myself. Tears flowed as I realized some would be finishing off their years of Key Club with us that day. Tears flowed as I realized we made a difference, in ourselves, and in others across the globe. DCON was an amazing experience. - Adriel Eje
