Lohiya Nagar/Ganjpeth - Pune General Description: There are about 10,000 people living in this location, with a mix of kucca and pucca houses. Many of the women work as maids, while the men work as laborers. Sanitation Situation: There are two community toilets located in close proximity to this community. One toilet is on a main road - it has two separate entrances for men and women, with ten toilets on each side. People bring water from their homes to use in this toilet; it was quite dirty, with feces left in the toilet, trash in some toilets, dogs inside the building, and so on. A portion of this community lives along a small nala, and there is one toilet further down the canal which they use. Families in this area pay 30 rupees/month to use these toilets. Open defecation also occurs in a field a short distance off of the main road. While we were walking around, people complained about the amount of trash on the roads, saying that the poor hygiene situation left “something in the air” which caused people to fall ill frequently. The people who lived down by the canal also complained that the water tend to overflow during the monsoon season, flooding their homes and creating problems. Top Reasons to Choose This Location/Unique Aspects: 1. Locals were quite vocal in voicing their negative opinions about the local hygiene situation 2. Some of the residents face potential tearing down of their homes by the PMC, due to their proximity to municipal land. 3. The community seemed divided on the use of the two toilets. Members of one part would not allow the members from the other part use their toilets. 4. Some women from the area have been given ‘vigilante cards’ as in they have been deemed to the position of law enforcers by the Pune Police. They very proudly flash these cards and say that ‘no one can mess with them’. It will be very interesting to leverage the power of these women to see if it can bring about any change to their sanitation grievances. 5. Open defecation (mostly by kids) happens in a ground right opposite to the toilet
