DIRECTOR’S STATEMENTI was 21 and on my way out of college. I took hold of the opportunities the film program I was in of-fered by submitting a script that I co-wrote with my future husband, Josh, to the “Feature Film Initia-tive”. Writing, directing, and editing a feature length film with a $6,000 budget when the longest film I’d previously made before was 5 minutes long was a challenge, to say the least.

This has been a wild journey since day 1 of pre-production. Through every step I’ve grown and evolved alongside the creation “The Big Frozen Gumshoe”. I hope that those who see our film can feel how hard a bunch of eagar filmmakers and actors from South Florida were to get this movie in front of them. Our drive was to create, learn, and ultimately to make people laugh.

Q&A WITH DIRECTOR KAT BRADY

What was your inspiration for the film?We were inspired by the use of technology in modern films, such as texting and social media, and slapstick, pun heavy comedies.

What was the process of getting the film made? The film was made possible by many generous people. From our friends and family who backed our Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign we raised $6,080 which allowed us to afford the enitrecost of production including insurance, props, costumes, and meals. They believed in our abilities and drive to create a fun and rewarding project.

Josh Brady, our producer/co-writer, and our director of photography, Shelby Halberg, were dedicated to the project from the get go. They put their hearts into the film and were my core personal and professional support system. After that, our actors Gregg Goldsbury (Dick) and Braden Bullard (Kid) came on board. Their roles spanned nearly every day of filming. Gregg was on set for 25 out of 26 days, with Braden just shortly behind. Their dedication to the project was immeasurable, along with our entire cast and crew who donated their time and talents.

With the guidance from our former film professors Michael Seminerio and Frank Eberling, alongwith former staff members Greg Jocoy and Paul Jefferys, we had a solid foundation to support our project throughout the entire process.

What did you learn about directing films? I learned that directing is incredibly difficult! Prior to this, I’d never worked on a film longer than 5 minutes. Every day was, and continues to be, a learning experience. I’ve loved every minute of it.

What has been most rewarding memory of making the film to you?The first time we showed the completed film to our family and they laughed.

What is your favorite film?My “favorite” movie is always changing. If you ask me today, I’d say “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?”

Who was your biggest influence? My mom. If somebody in a movie farted, she’d cry laughing.

PRODUCTION NOTES

Kat, Josh, and Shelby became friends while attending Palm Beach State College’s film program. The Film Department offers an amazing opportunity to its students called the Student Feature Film Initiative. Each year the department engages in the production of a feature film crewed entirely by current and former students. During their final semester in college, Kat and Josh began writing the script and in October they submitted The Big Frozen Gumshoe to the Film Initiative. On December 11th, 2014 the trio of Kat as Director, Josh as Producer, and Shelby as the Director of Photography, pitched the production and their vision for The Big Frozen Gumshoe in front of the panel of faculty and student observers. The winning team gets to independently produce their script while the college provides them with equipment as well as guidance from the professional faculty and staff. Their project was selected the same week they graduated. Our trio established the company Very Serious Films to produce the movie.

On February 2nd, 2015 they launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for production. As recent graduates, they needed a way to cover expenses items such as costumes, props, food, and insurance. They were successfully funded on March 6th, raising just over $6,000.

During pre-production, they gathered a talented cast of professional, local actors. Gregg Goldsbury (Detective Dick) and Braden Bullard (Kid) were cast early on. Their commitment to the film was essential to its success. Their parts spanned nearly every day of filming. Gregg, who studied at the Burt Reynolds Institute for Film and Theatre, was on set for all but a single day. The entire crew consisted of alumni of the PBSC film program. They also had some students working in front of the camera, such as Braden.

Production began on May 11th and was filmed on location all across Palm Beach County, Florida. Locations included Pineapple Grove in downtown Delray Beach, a French restaurant in West Palm Beach, Adventure Mini Golf in Lake Worth, the Lake Park town hall, a vape shop, and local parks. The entire cast and crew donated their time and talents to this prodcution. This was truly a passion project for everyone involved. Due to constraints, the shooting schedule was 3 days a week spanning 2 months. After 26 days of production they wrapped on July 10th.

Post-Production began immediately after. Kat spent a full year editing the film to picture lock. Our composer, Andrew Aycoth, who was a music student at West Virginia University at the time, hopped onto the project and created 15 original music pieces for the film. Kat and Andrew worked closely to elevate the movie through the score. During this time, Kat began work on the sound design while our colorist, Gavin Winnett, was developing the look of the film. Our visual ef-fects artist, Katy Lee, joined as our last post-production piece. She created fun and exciting visuals which were essential to the plot of the film.

Working on a feature length film where everyone is donating their time and talents presents a pleth-ora of challenges none of us had ever faced. Every day our cast and crew was eager to meet these challenges to create a film we can all be proud to make.
