Introduction

What is the Logistic Support Analysis?

The LSA process is tailored in accordance with the maturity of the system/equipment

design. The LSA provides a foundation for the Integrated Logistics Support (ILS)

program by generating source data and maintenance plans, which will direct other ILS

elements such as training, technical publication and provisioning. The source material

will be identified during the development of a maintenance philosophy through the

implementation of the LSA itself. The maintenance philosophy should adopt and concur

with the program maintenance concept and ensure that supportability requirements are

considered and incorporated into the design of an equipment/system. The diagram

(right) illustrates a generic LSA process and its analyses that are normally conducted1.

Certain inputs to the LSA process need to be considered on a program by program

basis, and are typically:

LSA Plan - Documents what tasks are going to be completed and when and by whom.

Supportability Issues - Supportability requirements, constraints and recommendations.

Customer data - May include a Use Study, Maintenance Concept and required data

elements.

Subcontractor Data - May include analysis, data elements, drawings, product

maintenance recommendations, etc.

Engineering Data - May include FMEA, maintainability data, hardware breakdowns, etc

In this assignment I will highlight how the LSA effect the Supply Support only

Aim

The Aim of this assignment is to highlight the effect of supply support ways to LSA by

using Level of repair analysis (LORA).

Ways to effect Supply Support2

There are other activities such as supportability concept evaluation and depending on

the specific program requirements may include an undertaking to ensure that program

requirements and objectives will be assessed and addressed

It is very important to implement Level Of Repair Analysis (LORA) which is instrumental

in providing an optimized maintenance philosophy based upon a cost rational. The

LORA can be considered as a two-stage process that determines where an item is

destined to be repaired and to what level. Hence the objective of the LORA, when

performed correctly, is to determine the optimum cost of repair of an end

item/equipment, by taking into consideration all associated support cost drivers (e.g.,

manpower, support equipment, training, transportation, etc.) that would be required at

each line of maintenance3.

When determining if an item or sub-item should be replaced and/or repaired at 1st line,

consideration must be given to all aspects of the maintenance task. These include fault

diagnostic techniques, accessibility

requirements, task verification,

elapsed task times, disruption to the

operational environment etc

The steps of LORA are addressed in the

It is worth to mention that the ELORA provides a recommended repair strategy based

upon economic rational. For instance Spare parts stocking problem

The spare parts stocking problem is generally solved using the decisions that

result from the LORA as an input. The goal is to allocate spare parts inventory

in a repair network such that a certain availability of the installed base is

achieved against the lowest possible spare parts costs. In the military world, a

recommended spares list is usually requested at the acquisition phase. Various

commercial tools exist that can perform the spare parts stocking problem. Consideration

is also given to an item's maintainability and physical

Conclusion

Repair activity is, of course, fundamental to any maintenance program. Repair to a

standard "as good as new" may not always be the optimum solution. Should

components be repaired in situ, in the workshop, or sent offsite for attention by a

specialist contractor? Level Of Repair Analysis (LORA) can be a very complex process,

requiring that numerous factors, each of which may be inter-related to the others, be

taken into account. LORA is also an important ingredient of Integrated Logistics Support

(ILS), the management of the technical logistic disciplines that plan and develop support

for military force.
