I. INTRODUCTION
During the period from September 21, 1981 to October
19, 1981, a Moving Coils PEM survey was carried out on
Iron Mountain, near Merritt British Columbia, by
Geoterrex Limited of 2060 Walkley Road, Ottawa, Ontario $ 7 0

9 The-survey was conducted on two grids, A.N. and B.N., with
a combined total of 50.6 line kilnmetres surveyed.
The purpose of the PEM survey was to locate any anomalous
readings which may be indicative of possible mineralized
zones.
Geoterrex supplied a four man crew consisting of two
geophysicists, Mr. T.G. Thompson and Mr. A. Soon, plus two
assistants.
11. LOCATION AND ACCESS
Iron Mountain is located approximately 10 kilometres
south of Merritt in the Nicola Provincial Forest area
of British Columbia.
Access to the survey area was by gravel mountain road,
leading to a microwave tower at the peak, off of the
Coldwater River Road. Further access to the grid lines
was by four wheel drive on a number of logging roads.

111.1 Personnel

111.2 Equipment
Geoterrex Limited provided the following equipment:
1. Vehicles: One 1981 Chevrolet Van rented and one 1981
Chevrolet Blazar four wheel drive rented.
2. One Crone Geophysics PEM system with specifications
as follows:
a) Transmitter: output voltage: 24 volts
S/N 21 time base : 10.8 msecs.
powered by: 2-12 volt rechargable
batteries mounted on a pack frame (2 sets)
b) Transmitter Loop: diameter: 15 metres closed coil
c ) Receiver: measured quantities: Primary shut off
voltage pulse (PP)
s/N 9 Time derivative of the transient
magnetic field by integrating sampling over
eight contiguous time windows
Time base: 10.8 msec.

Timing - a telemetry link is maintained by radio signal or
by direct cable link, between the transmitter and
receiver.
Sampling - Sample and Hold: Receiver averages 512 readings for all channels and stores for display.
Continuous: Running average for all channels
is stored, enabling operator to reject thunder-
storm spikes and reject noise by visual inspection.

111.3 Production
Overall production based on line kilometres per pro-
duction day was 2.53 kilometres per day.
Total number of production days: 20
Total number of line kilometres Grid A.N.: 17.95
Total number of line kilometres Grid B.N.: 32.65
Total number of PEM lines surveyed: 46
Several days were lost during the survey due to rain and
snowfall in the grid area which was at elevations over
4500 Et A.S.L. The rough topography and nature of the
lines cut slowed production'somewhat, as it was difficult
and sometimes dangerous to move the equipment along the
lines and lay out the transmitter loop.
After :.consulting with the' representative of the client
and the line cutting contractor5 party chief, it was agreed
that lines would be chainsawed to improve them. This made
the survey procedures safer and improved production consider-
ably.
IV. MOVING COILS PEM SURVEY PROCEDURE
The Crone PEM s y s t e m t r a n s m i t s an on-of f -on n e g a t i v e -
o f f t y p e c u r r e n t waveform i n t h e t r a n s m i t t e r l o o p , which
c r e a t e s a p r i m a r y m a g n e t i c f i e l d o f t h e same s h a p e . When
t h e c u r r e n t i s s w i t c h e d o f f or on t h e r e is a f i n i t e d e c a y
o r r i s e ramp. T h i s ramp i n d u c e s eddy c u r r e n t s i n a con-
d u c t o r t h r o u g h which t h e f i e l d p a s s e s . A t t h e end o f t h e
t r a n s m i t t e d ramp, t h e s e eddy c u r r e n t s d e c a y a t a f i n i t e
r a t e , g e n e r a t i n g t h e i r own s e c o n d a r y m a g n e t i c f i e l d . T h i s
f i e l d w i l l d e c a y w i t h time. The r e c e i v e r co i l p i c k s u p
t h i s m a g n e t i c f i e l d and i t is measu red by t h e r e c e i v e r u n i t .
The s e c o n d a r y f i e l d is measured o v e r e i g h t d i f f e r e n t t i m e
s p a n s , o r "windows", a s an a v e r a g e o f t h e f i e l d o v e r e a c h
window and is d i s p l a y e d a s a f r a c t i o n o f t h e p r i m a r y f i e l d
i n p a r t s p e r t h o u s a n d ( m i l l i v o l t s p e r v o l t ) .
T h i s PEM s u r v e y u t i l i z e d t h e moving coi ls c o n f i g u r a t i o n
which is a n i n - l i n e s u r f a c e s u r v e y method. The t r a n s m i t t e r
l o o p was a 1 5 metre round l o o p which was moved a l o n g t h e
g r i d l i n e s a t 50 metre i n t e r v a l s . The r e c e i v e r was a
standard PEM survey receiving coil which was moved along
the same line 100 metres behind the transmitter. The
plotting point for survey reading measurements is midway
between the transmitter and receiver.
VI. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The s u r v e y d a t a a c q u i r e d from t h e I r o n Mountain g r i d
g e n e r a l l y shows a v e r y f l a t background r e s p o n s e . T h i s l a c k
o f a v a r y i n g background c o n d u c t i v i t y was r e c o g n i z e d i n t h e
f i e l d so t h a t a t es t o f t h e P.E.M. s y s t e m was c a r r i e d o u t .
The s u r v e y crew p r o c e e d e d to run a t e s t l i n e a l o n g a d i r t
r o a d i n t h e a r e a which was known t o cross a b u r i e d p i p e l i n e .
The r e s u l t s o f t h e t e s t i n d i c a t e d t h a t t h e equ ipmen t was i n -
d e e d f u n c t i o n i n g p r o p e r l y .
The f l a t background r e s p o n s e is c o n s i d e r e d to b e a r e a l -
i s t i c v iew o f t h e a r e a . However, p rob lems were e n c o u n t e r e d
which.may h a v e a f f e c t e d some o f t h e i n d i v i d u a l r e a d i n g s .
The t h i n o v e r b u r d e n was i n s u f f i c i e n t i n numerous p l a c e s
t o s u p p o r t t h e e x i s t i n g t rees . T h i s r e s u l t e d i n a l o t o f
d e a d f a l l a s t h e t rees c o u l d n o t s t a n d a f t e r d y i n g . The l i n e
c u t t e r s were t o l d t h a t t h e i r j o b was t o a x e c u t o n l y , b u t
a f t e r c o n s u l t a t i o n w i t h t h e c l i e n t ' s r e p r e s e n t a t i v e and
t h e G e o t e r r e x crew, t h e y began c u t t i n g w i t h c h a i n s a w s on
s u b s e q u e n t l i n e s . T h i s improved p r o d u c t i o n o f t h e P.E.M. su r -
vey b u t p rob lems s t i l l e x i s t e d w i t h t h e 15m Tx l o o p . The
bush was d e n s e i n some a r e a s and o t h e r s t a t i o n s were l o c a t e d
o n uneven rock f a c e s making i t d i f f i c u l t t o l a y o u t t h e
l o o p i n a c i rc le even though a c o n s c i o u s e f f o r t was made
to d o so a t a l l s t a t i o n s . A l s o , t h e r e was n o means o f
communica t ion be tween t h e Tx crew and t h e Rx o p e r a t o r
e x c e p t f o r coded s i g n a l s g i v e n by w h i s t l e i n d i c a t i n g , " s y n c " ,
" p u l s e " , and "move to n e x t s t a t i o n " . T h e r e f o r e , i t was i m -
p o s s i b l e t o i n s u r e t h a t t h e Rx co i l was o r i e n t e d p e r p e n d i c u l a r
t o t h e same p l a n e a s t h e Tx l o o p to maximize t h e s i g n a l
s t r e n g t h . A b e t t e r means o f communica t ion may h a v e improved
t h e r e s u l t s somewhat a s i t would a l l o w t h e s u r v e y crew to
e l i m i n a t e t h e o r i e n t a t i o n p rob lem.
The s u r v e y c o u l d have been c o m p l e t e d i n less time had i t
b e e n . i n i t i a t e d e a r l i e r i n t h e s e a s o n . D u r i n g t h e s u r v e y
t h e r e were s e v e r a l d a y s l o s t due to s n o w f a l l . Al though t h e
snow d i d n o t a c c u m u l a t e t o any g r e a t d e p t h , t h e n a t u r e o f
t h e t e r r a i n and s l i p p e r y d e a d f a l l made o p e r a t i o n s h a z a r d o u s
when t h e r e %!as snow p r e s e n t . O p e r a t i r ~ g o n snow l ed to s e v e r a l
f a l l s r e s u l t i n g i n minor i n j u r i e s . A f a l l a t t h e end o f t h e
s u r v e y b a d l y damaged t h e P.E.M. t r a n s m i t t e r so t h a t t h e f i n a l
200 metres o f l i n e 5 4 o f G r i d B.N. c o u l d n o t b e c o m p l e t e d .
I t is o f g r e a t a d v a n t a g e t o i n i t i a t e m o u n t a i n s u r v e y s ,
particularly those at higher elevations, early enough so
that they can be completed well before the first snowfalls. ,
This could be particularly advantageous in the Iron Mountain
area because it is reportedly a normally dry climate area.
