once the infrastructure is in place , it has very high capacity and low per unit cost. so it can be used to move large volumes of relatively low priced materials. Such as coal and minerals.

it discourages competition , as a track built by one organization between two points will have enough capacity to meet all demand.

Example: there is only one rail line under the English channel, but this has the enough capacity to ,meet the demand on this heavy used route for the foreseeable future.

The main disadvantage is its inflexibility.
