  • Week 1

  • Week 1 Studio activity Mass Aim: use wood bricks to build a tower as high as possible Group Plan: build a square shape tower, structure of the wall shown below.

Our group decides to use a regular pattern of the wall of the building. Each brick applied two average force from two bricks of high layer as shown on the right.

One problem we ignored is we have to build each vertical wall as straight as possible, or each wall are not stable since there is no force to support horizontally.

Each wall of the tower should be perfect vertical

  • Week 1

We get confused about how to build a door, since substructure is the underlying structure(Francis, 2008). It seems impossible to build girder structure without substructure. Maybe we broke the rules, to tie several bricks together by rubber band.Hopefully, it dose work. The materialwood bricks are light and hard which is a ideal material. However, it is impossible to build as high as possible without high building quality and reliable structure design.

    vs

    vs

Comparing these two structures, the right structure would load larger mass. The material of these straws is thin plastic,

which is soft and flexible. The shorter straws, more stable

    structure.

For these two structures, they both fold straws as V shape,

which is better than above structures. The reason is the mass of the box down to the

ground via double load paths than above structures. Between

these two, the right one use extra straw which act inward

force to surround other straws. I reckon the right one is better.

  • Week 2 studio activity- Frame Aim: use a piece of balsa wood to build a tower as high as possible. Group Plan: Considering triangle is one of the most stable structure, our group decide to choose triangle as our fundamental frame.

The side view of our structure, each layer of the frame formed

    by two triangles

The top view of the structure

which shows the frame of the base, which formed by

    four triangles

  • Week 2 studio activity- Frame Test and analysis

On the building process, our group met a problem about fixed joints, its hard to glue 4 or 5 beams together and there are many joints in our frame. The building efficiency is too low to build higher during this class. The structure is still firm when we cut out the crossing beams in the base, it is clear shown that the crossing beams almost not be applied forces; then, the structure still stand when we cut out one inclined beam of the vertical face; finally, the frame fell down when we cut out the column, which signs the column load most of forces
