After the Soviet Union was transformed into the Russian Federation in 1991, the population began to gradually decrease. Russia began to produce coal, oil, and timber and turned its focus away from farming, causing farmers to leave the country because of decreased land value.

• Russia has the eighth largest oil reserves and is the largest producer of oil in the world.

• Russia produced as average of 10.2 million barrels of oil per day in 2010. It produces 12% of the worlds oil.

Environmental Impacts:• Lack of maintenance has caused a slow but

constant seepage of oil from pipeline ruptures in Komi Region

• 5 million tons of crude oil are spilled in Russian oil fields each year, equivalent to 6 Deepwater Horizons

• At least 500,000 tons (18,325 oil trucks) of oil spill into the Arctic Ocean every year

How to Fix Problem:In order to fix this environmental disaster, strict regulations would have to be placed on Russian oil companies requiring them to fix present oil leaks and maintain pipelines to prevent leaks in the future.

Russia has more than a fi fth of the world’s forests4 th largest forests in the worldTotal Forest Area – 32,504 hectareIn 2010 – 988,758 trees were cut downBetween 1990 and 2010 Russia lost an average of 7,000 hectare of forest and gained 0.

Trees remove carbon dioxide from the air and produce oxygen. When deforestation occurs, there are less trees to remove the carbon dioxide, and it remains in the atmosphere, heating the planet. When forests are cleared by burning, carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming and ocean acidifi cation. In order to reverse the eff ect and stop this environmental disaster, laws should be passed that require a certain amount of trees planted per trees cut down.

DEFORESTATION

Main competitive industries in Russia include oil, natural gas, coal, precious metals, aerospace production, weapons, and military machinery.Coal: Russian coal mining companies use the open pit method of mining, which involves creating large pits in the ground in order to extract coal. Mining creates erosion, contamination of soil and groundwater, and loss of environmental biodiversity. Not only does the extraction of coal create environmental problems, burning of coal to create power releases CO2 into the atmosphere. In order to solve the problems mining creates, the mining process needs to be done in a less destructive manner, and reliance on coal needs to be turned to an alternative fuel source.
