Q&Aw/JEFFthe bartender

QWhat do you think sets The Loft apart from other bars in the area?

AI think that people like the new style. You know, they don’t wan-na go to a bar that’s dirty. They don’t wanna go to a bar that’s got things all along the wall. They want it nice, clean, and they want a great atmosphere. I think that’s what makes us more appealing than a normal bar with ‘tradition.’

QSo the food is a unique aspect to The Loft. What about the drinks?

AWe’re actually going to try to set a standard on a shot just our own. It’s called the Bubblegum shot - the Bubblegum bomb. I think it’s something that’s going to push us over the envelope with the other standard bars and their random shots.

QHow have the first few months of business gone? What kinds of things do you have planned for the future?

AThings are going pretty well. We’re actually going to start do-ing construction up on the top floor as soon as this year’s lease is up to actually extend the bar two more floors. So we’re gunna have a tri-level bar. That’s pretty exciting, especially for a place like Aggieville. To kind of break tradition.

QThe Loft is the only bar in Ag-gieville to serve food from open to close. What kind of food is available until 2 a.m. each day?

AIt’s all the fried foods. You know, it’d kill you if you ate too much of it. We got a lot of good fries, corndogs, all the good bar food so that when you’re nice and drunk...stuff you’d definitely want at the end of the night.

Each newsletter will feature a Q&A session with a different Loft personality. Subjects may include owners, managers, bartenders or loyal customers. This month’s victim is Jeff, a bartender that started working at The Loft in August. He shares his thoughts about everything related to The Loft!

it iseasybeing greenIn addition to being pet-friendly, the Loft is also very environmentally conscious. We are committed to keeping Manhattan a beautiful and ‘green’ city. Toward that goal, The Loft is looking forward to part-nering with local organizations to help us with our recycling efforts.

A special focus will be placed on the recycling of glass bottles and reuse of cooking grease.

We would love to hear your ideas on how we can accomplish our ‘green’ goal. We are open to any ideas you may have!

We have already received feedback on our brand new blog regarding this issue. If you are interested, check out our blog at blogs.jmc.ksu.edu/loftintheville to share some of your ideas. Comment on the post under the ‘Community’ page, or,

better yet, stop by The Loft tonight!

The Loft is the new host to Heaven, an alternative dance night in Aggieville. Octo-ber 13 marked the third night of Heaven, an event which started under the name Heat two years ago at P.J.’s Pub.

Dusty Garner, senior in political sci-ence, started Heat in December of 2007 because he felt it was important that the LBGT (lesbian, bisexual, gay, transsexual) community had a home in Aggieville.

During its two years at P.J.’s the event became increasingly popular and frequent-ly drew large crowds. At the end of last se-mester the event, which was previously

only a dance night, began to incorporate weekly drag shows, a tradition that will continue at The Loft.

Heat’s organizers be-gan looking for a new location to host Heat late this summer when they were informed that P.J.’s may be forced to close. The group contacted a number of bars, but none were interested in hosting the event. Many in the LBGT communi-ty began to fear that they would soon lose the only event in Manhattan’s his-tory that offered them a safe and accept-ing home.

Garner said he was relieved when he was contacted by Jacque Jacob-son, owner of The Loft, who told him she was very excited about the op-portunity to move the event to the newly opened bar. Garner said The Loft agreed to host the event, as Heaven, and they were able to move to the new location quickly.

One of the things Garner is most excited about is the ben-efits of the new location.

“The fact that we’ve been able to come here to a really beautiful bar with a really great video and sound system has been a really great blessing for us,” Garner said. “We look forward to being here for a long time.”

Heaven is essentially the same event as Heat; it still takes place on Tuesday nights and includes dancing and a live drag show. The differences etween PJ’s and The Loft, however, are notable. P.J.’s offered a larger dance floor and stage. The Loft is a much smaller bar.

A new bar to Aggieville, The Loft offers a high quality sound system and a half-dozen flat screen TV’s which can be used to play music videos.

The result: Heat felt like a dance night in an older and more open bar, while Heaven feels more like a dance party in a small crowded club. Many people who attended Heaven appreciated the new atmosphere.

“Even though the dance floor isn’t as big, it’s still a lot more fun,” said Morgan Aldridge, soph-omore in biology, who attended Heat several times last semester.

Derek Manzanares, sophomore in music edu-cation, said Heat had become something of a tradition after being at P.J.’s for nearly two years, but still ultimately felt moving the event to The Loft was a good idea.

“The bar’s a lot nicer, we’ve got TV’s to watch videos. It’s a lot different, but I think its going to get a lot better,” Manzanares said.

In a town where Garner and other members of the LBGT community have often felt exclud-ed and ostracized, being able to continue to have an alternative dance night and a home

where the community can feel safe and accepted, means that for them The Loft is nothing short of well, Heaven.
