Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I have been trying to figure out how to approach my December
letter to you. It has been difficult because of the losses some of
our members are facing and the hardships of others. We make
mention of those we hold in our prayers at every meeting, but
there are many of you that are unable to attend, perhaps due to
illness, I want you to know that we are thinking of you.
There is a time and a place for everything, sometimes we can't
see it in the moment, but we do have a purpose.
In this holiday season, be kind to one another,
be joyful in your friendships, and hold your family close.
I am looking forward to enjoying our Lodge
Christmas Party with many of you.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!
Sincerely, President Margaret Ripa Maier

THANK YOU LODGE SISTER DOTTIE CURTO FOR MAKING SUCH A FESTIVE REFRESHMENTS TABLE
We learned about MALOCCHIO , THE EVIL EYE.
It’s the look that one person gives to another if they are jealous or envious.
According to Italian folklore, those giving the malocchio can cause harm to
someone else. Legend says it’s just another way of putting a curse on others that can
cause physical pain such as head or stomach aches or even cause misfortune.
1. To Ward off the evil eye, you need an Italian Horn, Cornicello
A cornicello or cornetto, Italian for "little horn" or "hornlet", is an amulet worn to
protect against the evil eye. In Neapolitan, it is called cuornuciello or variants
thereof. In Italy people may wear the cornicello-an amulet of good luck used for
protection against the evil-eye curse. It consists of a twisted horn-shaped charm
often made of gold, silver, bone, or red coral.
FAVA BEANS; Italians traditionally consider fava beans as good luck symbols,
carrying a bean or two on their person, in a pocket or a handbag for good luck.

BAKED COD
Baccalà is a traditional Christmas Eve
favorite in Italy—it’s great as an appetizer
or as a main course.
2 Pounds salted cod, cut in serving pieces
1 can (16 ounces) tomatoes, drained & sieved
¼ cup chopped green olives
2 tablespoons capers
1 tablespoon snipped parsley
½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon pepper
½ teaspoon oregano
1. Soak salted cod in cold water 24 hours,
changing water every few hours.
2. Rinse with cold water, and pat dry. Arrange
pieces in a greased 2-quart baking dish.
3. Combine sieved tomatoes, olives, capers,
parsley and seasonings in a saucepan.
Bring to boil. Pour Sauce over fish.
4. Bake at 350 F. 25-30 minutes, or until fish
flakes easily when tested with a fork.
A popular New Year's meal in Italy is
COTECHINO CON LENTICCHIE (green
lentils with sausage) because of the
legume's greenish color and coin-like
appearance. Deeper into the myth: When
cooked, lentils plump with water,
symbolizing growing wealth.
1 Cup Lentils, rinsed 2 cups water
1 cup dry white wine
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 large tomato, peeled-seeded –chopped
1 slice bacon, diced
1 clove garlic, chopped
2 peppercorns and salt to taste
1 small bay leaf
2 pounds mild Italian sausage
1 small onion, sliced
1 small carrot, diced
1 stalk celery cut in pieces
4 peppercorns 1 small bay leaf
1. Combine lentils, water, wine, oil,
tomato, bacon, garlic, 3 peppercorns, 1
bay leaf and oil in a saucepan. Bring to
boil, reduce heat, simmer covered
about an hour or until lentils are soft.
2. Meanwhile, put sausage, onion, carrot,
celery and remaining peppercorns and
bay leaf into a large saucepan. Add
enough water to cover by 1 inch. Bring
to boil, reduce heat, simmer covered 10
minutes. Remove sausage from liquid,
remove casings and cut into thick
slices.
3. Serve sausage slices with Lentils,
4 servings

Francis Vigo born Giuseppe Maria Francesco Vigo
December 13, 1747 in Mondovi, Italy was an Italian-
American who aided the American forces during the
Revolutionary War and helped found a public university in
Vincennes, Indiana, USA.
In 1772 he established a fur trading business in St. Louis.
Vigo travelled down the Wabash, Ohio, and Mississippi
Rivers to St. Louis before returning to Kaskaskia to inform
Col. Clark of the British hold on Vincennes, which
prompted Clark to retake the town in 1779.
In 1783 Vigo moved to Vincennes and operated a fur
trading business there.
In 1801, Vigo petitioned the U.S. Congress for a donation
of land to establish the Jefferson Academy in Vincennes.
In 1806, Vigo was named one of the original trustees of
the now renamed Vincennes University. In 1818 Vigo
County, Indiana was established and named for him.
He died March 22, 1836 in Vincennes, Indiana
