MESSAGE FROMTHE PRESIDENT

NALSANATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LOCUMS IN SOUTH AFRICA

As CEO and founder of SA Locums I have seen first hand how the pharmacy locum industry in South Africa has grown in leaps and bounds over the

past six years. Being a locum has changed from a part time occupation to a fantastically varied and rewarding career option for many healthcare professionals and in particular doctors, pharmacists and nurses. If you are wondering whether locum work can be as rewarding and fulfilling as a permanent position, the following are the top reasons derived from a recent survey that was conducted amongst locums in South Africa.Work availability: There are many job opportunities available right now across South Africa due to the continued growth of retail pharmacies and the global focus amongst governments and leading healthcare organisations to drive primary care as the most important building block for long term health. This gives locums plenty of short term contract options across all provinces in South Africa. Registering with a national locum agency will ensure that there will not only be locum work available, but also that locums can choose which assignments they wish to take on.Decent remuneration: On average Locums get paid a 20 - 30% higher rate than a permanent position. However, uninformed locums have fears about a consistent income. Our survey has shown that if timesheets are completed to requirements and handed in weekly or even at the end of their shift, payment is mostly one week in arrears. With SA Locums payments have been ramped up to be paid on the first working day after the timesheet was received. Steady work: If you are a reliable, ethical locum providing regular availability updates to your staffing agency you will find many current placements being extended to you, when they find you to be a good fit for them. Being prepared to work regularly will keep you on the agency’s locum work roster and insure you a steady workflow each month.

Freedom: One of the biggest advantages of locum work is the option to choose both where and when you wish to work.Gain knowledge: Working across a spectrum of client locations and environments will drastically increase your knowledge and experience, giving you greater confidence across different systems and processes. This will also insure that you become a valuable asset for any company that you work for and in turn make you a valuable and sought after employee.Work opportunities: Locum work can also open other career doors, for example, providing additional training in certain areas. Making the most of all of these will look great on your CV.Quickly filling your working diary: Being registered with a reputable staffing agency and sharing your availability for locum shifts will ensure that you don’t have to worry about a full month’s income Variety: Choosing locum assignments in different industry environments provide the locum a chance to work and gain experience in a variety of jobs. This broadens the locum’s scope and choice of jobs they know they will in future prefer for their specific career paths chosen. In closing, as 2015 is coming to an end, I want to wish you and your family a happy and safe festive season. 2015 has been a momentous year for NALSA and Locum Lifestyle magazine and we’re delighted to share with you that with the sixth edition of Locum Lifestyle magazine it will bring the total of digital and printed copies distributed to more than 240,000. The past two years have been fast-paced and without question 2016 will prove to be another demanding year for us all. Although there’s been a request from a few advertisers that we change the magazine from bi-monthly to a monthly publication, we’ve decided to keep it as bi-monthly for 2016. We’re looking forward to meeting the challenges of the new year ahead and we thank you for your continued support.

The Ferrari 488 GTB’s new 3902 cc V8 turbo is at top of its class for power output, torque and response times,

setting a new benchmark for performance. The engine unleashes 670 cv at 8,000 rpm along with 760 Nm of maximum torque in seventh gear and a response time to the accelerator of just 0.8 seconds at 2,000 rpm. These figures are sufficient to allow the 488 GTB to accelerate from 0-200 km/h in an astonishing 8.3 seconds. The gearbox features Variable Torque Management which unleashes the engine’s

massive torque smoothly and powerfully right across the rev range, while specific gear ratios deliver incredibly progressive acceleration when the driver floors the throttle. Aerodynamics:The car’s aerodynamics also made a pivotal contribution to performance: its 1.67 efficiency figure is a new record for a production Ferrari and is the fruit of 50% more downforce than the previous model and reduced drag. The greatest challenge was achieving these two goals simultaneously. Several innovative elements were specifically developed to

do so, not least a double front spoiler, base bleed side intakes and, at the rear, active aerodynamics coupled with a blown spoiler. Vehicle dynamics:The Ferrari 488 GTB’s subsystems and electronic controls make its power and performance instantly available and controllable. The evolved version of Ferrari’s side slip angle control system is more precise and less invasive, providing greater longitudinal acceleration out of corners. It also controls the active dampers which renders the car’s dynamic behaviour during complex manoeuvres even flatter and more stable.Exterior design:

Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the new car features very sculptural flanks which are the key to its character. The wide front spoiler features a double profile to improve the thermal efficiency of the radiators positioned at the sides. At the centre two pylons are combined with a deflector which channels air towards the flat underbody. The broad, low tail is also dominated by aerodynamic solutions, including an innovative blown spoiler which generates downforce without increasing drag. FERRARI 250 GTO The Ferrari 250 GTO is a racing GT car that was produced by Ferrari from 1962 to 1964 for the FIA’s Group 3 Grand Touring Car category. In 2012 the 250 GTO made for Stirling Moss in 1962 became the world’s most expensive car in history. It was sold in a private transaction for US$38,115,000 dollars. The interior of car is very basic, emphasizing the car’s racing intentions. The instrument panel has no speedometer, seats are cloth-upholstered and there is no carpets.

FERRARI F40 The Ferrari F40 is a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive, two-door car built from 1987 to 1996. This Fer-rari was designed to celebrate the company’s 40th anniversary and was the last Ferrari personally approved by Enzo Ferrari. At the time it was the fastest, most powerful, and most expensive car Ferrari sold to the public. The car’s factory suggested retail price was US$400,000 in 1987, al-though some buyers were reported to have paid as much as US$1.6 million.

FERRARI TESTAROSSA The Ferrari Testarossa is a 12-cylinder mid-engine car manufactured by Ferrari and went into production in 1984, it was produced until 1996 with two model conversions. Almost 10,000 Testarossas were produced, making it one of the most-produced Ferrari models ever. The design came from Pininfarina. The large side intakes sometimes referred to as “cheese graters” stretched from the doors to the rear fenders and were needed for rules in several countries outlawing large openings on cars. The Testarossa had twin radiators in the back with the engine, instead of a single radiator in the front.

FERRARI 308 GTBThe Ferrari 308 GTB berlinetta and targa topped 308 GTS were V8 mid-engined, 2-seater sports cars manufactured by Ferrari from 1975 to 1985. The 308’s body was designed by Pininfarina’s Leonardo Fioravanti, who had been responsible for some of Ferrari’s most celebrated shapes to date such as the Daytona, the Dino and the Berlinetta Boxer.

Most of us have been told that when we have an exercise regime, we

need to “change it up” to ensure we “exercise” different parts of the body. Changing routines and exercises ensure that our body does not stagnate. This is the body - INSANELY amazing. It assimilates and integrates information so quickly and makes it part of our being. (our cells, fibres, muscles) So if you don’t want to stagnate, you need to keep moving, stay creative, increase your body and minds vocabulary and expression. For 2015, my fitness & health goals were to increase my overall flexibility and strength, (not just fitness in a physical sense but as a holistic human being). Fitness and health refer to our physical bodies and also our emotional and mental well being. Everything is connected and has an impact on each other. This is inherently known to be true through experience. When a person feels mentally healthy, the body (and the emotional body) usually feels healthier too and when we feel mentally, physically or emotionally unhealthy, it affects how we experience the world, how we feel, think and “show up”.During 2015 I chose to focus on flexibility and strength after assessing my current patterns

of thinking, feeling, relating and being. I am happy with my fitness & health levels in terms of mobility, stability and agility (body, emotions and mind). Lightening fast reflexes, and my ability to think and access my emotional intelligence is pretty impressive (in terms of agility and mobility). I also have a sense of stability within and my “balance point” on all levels is well developed. Life’s curve balls and surprises can’t sway me too much and I am able to adapt quickly. However, developing the sensation of strength and flexibility needed some practice. Developing strength of character in the way I “show up”, make decisions and own choices I value. Improving flexibility in the way I habitually do things was also an area for development. My drive for excellence can have an unhealthy effect on my creative process and inviting downtime for rejuvenation and self-care. So less of doing things “my way”and more “go with the flow” to improve my flexibility was my personal goal.In order to start making this awareness and sensation a part of my actual cellular structure (wiring and hormone activity), and hence a sustainable reality to reap the benefits - I would start making it part of my daily routine by changing my modus operandi

and cultivating a new way of moving and being in my body and mind. That is how a human being learns and programmes him/herself – through raising awareness and experience-based neuroplasticity. (a.k.a. doing things and thinking differently in order to feel differently ) Questions to access your “Fitness Levels”:1) What part of your “fitness” regime is no longer challenging or serving you?2) What can you do to improve your “state of health” (mentally, physically and emotionally) - by introducing more flexibility, agility, strength or mobility?3) What might be the benefit of being more flexible, agile or mobile to you, your relationships and professional resilience?

Stretch yourself. (Literally and figuratively)

What is hotel barging? Despite the growing popularity of cruising, particularly on large river vessels,

hotel barging is still a little known niche concept within the vast cruise industry. Perhaps the term “barging” deters interest, conjuring up images of narrowboats or coal lighters? In fact, nothing could be further from the truth.

Most hotel barges started life as cargo vessels but have since been painstakingly converted to offer luxury boutique accommodation for small groups of up to 20 passengers. This is cruising, but in a very different style to ships plying the big rivers or oceans. The pace is slow, with a 6 day cruise often covering little more than 50 miles along a rural canal. Passengers can walk

or bike the towpaths and never be left behind as their floating hotel glides gently along. The idea is to offer guests full immersion into the culture, history and gastronomy of one of a number of fascinating regions of Europe such as Burgundy, Le Midi, Alsace, or the Italian Veneto. Every day, when not cruising, a crew member leads an excursion, perhaps to a vineyard for wine tasting, a market where the chef might buy fresh local ingredients for the evening meal, or a visit to a unique “off the beaten track” location that you would never find on your own. These could be to the still inhabited troglodyte cave dwellings, a private chateau, or

to see an olive oil press at work and sample its produce.Surprisingly for such a largely unknown travel concept, the leading hotel barging company, European Waterways, has been offering its exclusive floating hotels for nearly 40 years. There are 18 vessels in the fleet, the best known of which is Anjodi, star of celebrity chef Rick Stein’s award winning BBC TV series “French Odyssey”, transporting him along the Canal du Midi on a voyage of culinary discovery. Other hotel barges offer the same intimate atmosphere, all with high levels of personal service and access to the tranquillity of smaller

waterways which larger vessels cannot reach.About half of European Waterways’ bookings are for whole boat charters. The small passenger capacity offers a unique opportunity for groups of friends or family to enjoy their own bespoke private cruise. Otherwise, clients book a cabin to join the floating house party, hosted by the Captain and pampered by the chef and the rest of the crew.Whether you fancy a soak in the on deck spa-pool, a game of bowls on the bank or just to sit and watch the sun go down over the countryside with cocktail in hand, a

“slow boat” European Waterways barge cruise offers the ultimate in experiential travel.

While those killer rays may feel sensational, the effects of sun

exposure may not be as agreea-ble over time. According to the American Academy of Derma-tology (AAD), one in five people will develop some form of skin cancer during their lifetime.Prolonged ultraviolet exposure may also lead to cataracts. Then there's premature aging of the skin, sunlight is a major culprit of wrinkles, dryness and age spots. Make sure your skin is protected this summer. Here are some useful tips:• Use a good sun screen to block the harmful uv rays when you're out during the day, this includes cloudy days. The sun’s rays can penetrate light clouds, mist, and fog. The danger exists in all seasons,

and the damage builds up each year.• Moisturise your skin frequently with a natural based moisturiser. • Avoid sunburn, but not all sun exposure for the benefit of vitamin D, which is beneficial to your health. It is speculated, although not proven, that adequate levels of vitamin D can reduce the risk of mela-noma. It is known that vitamin D is good for combatting other types of cancer, so this makes good sense. Responsible ex-posure to the sun is the best way to synthesise vitamin D. Commit to getting screened for vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D also assists with the prevention of skeletal disease.According to Dr. Mercola’s blog these are the 7 signs that you

might suffer from Vitamin D deficiency. The only way to know for sure if you’re vitamin D deficient is via blood testing. However, there are some signs and symp-toms to be aware of as well. If any of the following apply to you, you should get your vitamin D levels tested sooner rather than later.1. You Have Darker SkinThe darker the skin the higher the risk of vitamin D deficiency, because if you have dark skin, you may need as much as 10 times more sun exposure to produce the same amount of vitamin D as a person with pale skin As Dr. Holick explained, your skin pigment acts as a natural sunscreen, so the more pig-ment you have, the more time

How Your Skin Can Survive the Summer SunDo you think of your skin as a beautiful feature to be bared when the weather warms up, or is it simply a protective shell, an instrument for touch, or a telling clue to your age? While your skin may be all of these things, it is also your body's most prominent organ. So it is essential that you take care of it, especially during the summertime, when UV levels can wreak havoc on exposed skin.

you’ll need to spend in the sun to make ad-equate amounts of vitamin D. 2. You Feel “Blue”Serotonin, the brain hormone associated with mood elevation, rises with exposure to bright light and falls with decreased sun exposure. In 2006, scientists evaluated the effects of vitamin D on the mental health of 80 elderly patients and found those with the lowest levels of vi-tamin D were 11 times more prone to be de-pressed than those who received healthy doses.3. You’re 50 or OlderAs mentioned, as you get older your skin doesn’t make as much vitamin D in response to sun ex-posure. At the same time, your kidneys become less efficient at converting vitamin D into the form used by your body and older adults tend to spend more time indoors (i.e. getting even less sun exposure and therefore vitamin D).4. You’re Overweight or Obese (or Have a Higher Muscle Mass)Vitamin D is a fat-soluble, hormone-like vitamin, which means body fat acts as a "sink" by col-lecting it. If you're overweight or obese, you're therefore likely going to need more vitamin D than a slimmer person -- and the same holds true for people with higher body weights due to muscle mass.5. Your Bones AcheAccording to Dr. Holick, many who see their doc-tor for aches and pains, especially in combina-tion with fatigue, end up being misdiagnosed as having fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome. “Many of these symptoms are classic signs of vitamin D deficiency osteomalacia, which is dif-

ferent from the vitamin D deficiency that causes osteoporosis in adults,” he says. “What’s hap-pening is that the vitamin D deficiency causes a defect in putting calcium into the collagen matrix into your skeleton. As a result, you have throbbing, aching bone pain.”6. Head SweatingAccording to Dr. Holick, one of the first, classic signs of vitamin D deficiency is a sweaty head. In fact, physicians used to ask new mothers about head sweating in their newborns for this very reason. Excessive sweating in newborns due to neuromuscular irritability is still described as a common, early symptom of vitamin D deficiency.7. You Have Gut TroubleRemember, vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, which means if you have a gastrointestinal con-dition that affects your ability to absorb fat, you may have lower absorption of fat-soluble vita-mins like vitamin D. This includes gut conditions like Crohn’s, celiac and non-celiac gluten sensi-tivity, and inflammatory bowel disease.

When all is said and done, the most effective way to take care of your skin this summer is to maintain a healthy balance between exposing your skin to the sun enough sunlight which will create adequate vitamin D, but too much that will cause burning and over exposure that will enhance aging

Moisturise frequently and keep hydrated, wear asun hat, soak up the sun and enjoy your festive season.

Losing an EyeLosing an eye is a traumatic experience, whether through trauma, pathological or congenital reasons. Leading a normal life thereafter can at times seem impossible. Even more challenging is the loss of both eyes or the loss of a child’s eye due to Retinal Blastoma (cancer occurring in children only). It is at times like these, when all seems too much to bear, that people who are trained to help such individuals come to the fore. Something to remember is that thousands are afflicted by the same circumstances annually and most go on to lead healthy, happy and even prosperous lives.

THE GIFT OF SIGHTBy Mosego Moloke, medical student - WRHC

In South Africa, cataracts are the leading cause of preventable blindness, with approximately 350 000 South Africans in need of cataract surgery of which 80% are living in rural areas. On 16 September 2015, The Wits Rural Health Club

(WRHC) set out for their fourth annual cataract surgery outreach at St. Barnabas Hospital in Libode, Eastern Cape. The event saw 22 elderly men and women; from the surrounding villages receive free cataract removal surgery – a sight restoring operation. Most patients from these rural areas can’t afford to travel to hospitals, where the waiting lists are also approximately a year long.

Unfortunately, heavy rain kept many of the patients away, as the roads were impossible to travel on. Despite this challenge, 25 patients participated in the procedure. These patients were assessed for surgical eligibility; the eye had to be measured by a scan and keratometry to determine the strength of the artificial lens that would be implanted during surgery. Project manager of Africa Vision’s, Moosa Saluman, brought the screening equipment and his expertise to the table to ensure the outreach was a success. He swiftly transferred his knowledge to the students of the WRHC, who competed the screening procedure

efficiently.Operation procedures commenced on Saturday morning performed by Professor Surka and his team and by lunchtime 22 patients had completed the surgery. Three patients had complicated cases which required more careful follow- up treatment (which could not be provided for in such a high volume setting). They were not able undergo the surgery and were referred to a tertiary hospital. The following morning all the patients were reviewed, and the outcomes were positive, with improvements in visual acuity evident at this early stage. None of the patients post-operative complications.

Page 28: Locum Lifestyle Magazine Edition 6

When the eye patches were removed, the patients were so grateful for what they received – the gift of sight. Some patients were crying tears of joy, for they had lived many years in darkness. This restoration of sight allowed them to restore their independence, as many relied on care from their families. “Siyabonga” they cried, “Se se ya bona” and broke into songs of gratitude. The exhilarating presence of joy reminded me of the real purpose of the WRHC and my personal commitment to “service with compassion”.

The rural landscapes, great company and wonderful new experiences are all part of the excitement, but it’s the people’s health in these the rural areas that matters most.

The Wit Rural Health Club is a student body whose vision is to inspire health science students to take up a career in rural health. The WRHC organised sponsorship for theatre consumables from Surgical & Ophthalmic Supplies and Genop. Professor Juzer Surka, who is based in Mthatha, is the ophthalmic surgeon who volunteered his time

and skills. The KZN Eye Care Coalition provided a mobile unit containing an operating microscope, surgeon’s chair, A-scan and keratometer. The non-communicable disease manager of the O.R. Tambo district, together with the local ophthalmic nurse assisted in identifying patients eligible for surgery from the surrounding villages.

The chase scene in your favourite TV series ends in a car plunging down the embankment along-side the road, the driver is flung free to land

with a sickening thud on the steep slope. Bystanders rush to his aid:“He’s moving!” they shout back at the onlookers on the roadside. “Call 911, he’s alive!”Movement is perhaps the second most important sign of life, apart from breathing. Movement is at the core of physiotherapy and its most important func-tion: to create, maintain and restore optimum move-ment and function for all.

You may be someone suffering from neck pain prevents you from moving your head easily; a frustrated road runner with a “dicky knee”; an older woman with a tired, over stretched pelvic floor muscle who gets anxious when there’s no loo in sight; an immobile patient in Intensive Care battling to breathe, or someone with a spinal injury and paralysed limbs… whatever the degree of physical impairment, a Physiotherapist will work with you for weeks, months, even

years, to restore your movement to the best level possible with the greatest amount of independence and the highest possible qual-ity of life. This is the Physiotherapist’s goal.

It is irrelevant what triggered the loss of function, whether disease, congenital im-pairment, injury or the stresses and strains of daily life, they are able to assess, treat and prevent movement disorders. These experts in movement and function (who

can be found in all healthcare settings from private to public), have studied in depth how the body works, during a four-year degree. They can treat patients at any stage of life. Some focus only on babies and children while others zoom in on the special needs of elderly patients. A few have attended many courses that enable them to focus on prob-lems specific to women, (teenage to meno-pause). Many physiotherapists focus on very specific subjects – evidence of the range of interests can be found on the South African Society of Physi-otherapy’s many Special Interest Groups: from Pain Manage-ment (a key issue for all Physi-otherapists, but here taken to a higher level) to Aquatic Therapy; Occupational Health; Cardio-Pulmonary Rehabilitation and even Animal Physiotherapy for the added members of the family. In South Africa they receive sufficient depth of training to be entrusted with the status of a “first-line practitioner” which means you don’t need to be referred to a “physio”, you can simply pick up the phone and make an appointment.Physiotherapists naturally spends a great deal of time with their patients. Informal chatting is usually the first stage of evaluat-ing the problem and arriving at a diagnosis. A hands-on examination will follow. This gives insight into how you are being affected and sheds further light on the problem and will then be able to arrive at a prognosis (the likely course of your condition and how it will affect you) and finally assign a treat-ment plan for you. This might involve a num-ber of techniques such as: joint mobilisation or manipulation; massage and myofascial release; individually designed exercise pro-

grammes; hydrotherapy (using movement in water as a healing technique), dry-needling and specialised electro-physical modali-ties to relieve pain and assist healing and recovery. A physiotherapist can also advise on suitable walking aids, splints and other appliances; and finally, - an important area of physiotherapy treatment - education. A key part of explaining your pain and educat-ing on how to manage your own condition or avoid recurrences. Obviously the physiotherapist is firstly inter-

ested in educat-ing individual patients about ways to achieve and maintain optimal health, but the profes-sion is also man-dated to offer public health messages to individuals and to groups (this is a significant role played by physiotherapists

in the public health service. That’s why the scope of physiotherapy in-cludes: assessment; evaluation; diagnosis; prognosis and treatment of patients.Treament could include:• training, supervising and managing

healthcare practitioners, and researching the evidence base of the profession

• advocating for patients / clients and for health

• public health strategies, including devel-opment and implementation of health policy, locally, nationally and internation-ally.

CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH By: Dr Garrick C Barber

Mulling over the topic that I was asked to write about – Cardiovascular Health – I began to panic. This is such a hot topic globally, and even more so given that so

many are jumping on the ‘bant wagon’. I dare not comment on this in fear of getting an ear full from banters. There is a great deal of science that supports different aspects of cardiovascular health and an editorial will never

justify the breadth and depth of the evidence that exists. However, looking at cardiovascular health from a slightly different standpoint might be good for the soul.

Urbanisation is one of the factors that have been linked to declining health in general. It seems that there has developed a culture of calorie management…the cycle of calorie intake above what is needed followed by the need to work it off in the gym, or the converse where exercise leads to an increased appetite. This is obviously a significant factor in cardiovascular health and lifestyle, and a poorly managed cycle can create havoc, leading to heart disease and many others while a well managed one is likely to have positive health

benefits. The urban calorie management cycle has hidden within it the beholder’s perception towards health and exercise and, in my opinion, has a base in the meta-physical. The notion that we as humans are made up of difference aspects – body, mind and soul – has a profound impact on our health and is something that is seldom taken cognisance of. Hence, my deviation from the supposed obvious.

I am quite a sensitive individual. When I am sad, my negative emotions can become overwhelming and make the rest of me difficult to manage. The converse is that when I am happy, I bounce off walls. In these states – and the spectrum of

emotions between the polar opposites – mind and soul are the major role players. How I feel on the inside is emulated in how I move on the outside, and therefore deeply affect my calorie management cycle.

Positive emotional states often bring with them positive physical energy and the desire to be active, and activity leads to an improved positive emotional state. It is a continuous and self-powering cycle that can be used to the advantage of the beholder, ensuring that the physical state is cared for.

However just as the positive cycle is auto-perpetuate, the negative one is too. The deeper one despairs and is found lamenting, the greater the chance of foregoing

Page 35: Locum Lifestyle Magazine Edition 6

physical activity and thereby continuing with negative thoughts and feelings. The cycle continues and can spiral out of control, with the void often being filled by substances and activities that are devoid of meaning or purpose, and often full of calories.

So how do we change this? How do we find ourselves in the positive self-cycle rather than the opposite? How do we direct our energies towards ensuring that body, mind and soul are all taken care of? I am no psychologist, and certainly no guru on how to do life, but there are a few things that I have learned in my short life so far.

FamilyPossibly the most important part of any person’s life is their family. Not everyone has had the privilege of growing up with close biological family, but that is not the only source of this resource. My non-absent biological family is quite small, but there are many more people in my life whom I consider to be family – from my two best friends carried through from University, to my newfound business

partner. These are people who validate me regardless of where I find myself in life, allowing me to make my mistakes – and support my success - while loving me unconditionally. If you don’t have them, find them; and if you can’t find them, make them.

AnimalsThis is not for everyone, but is certainly a big part of my positive re-enforcement cycle. There is something special about coming home to my two beautiful cats, having them cuddle on my lap and purr with unconditional love for me. The idea of looking after a creature that does not need you but chooses you is rather beautiful to me. They often take the place of the immediate need to have children, and are quite a fair deal easier to manage.

WorkSince we spend a large part of our lives at work, it is important to find ourselves in occupations that facilitate a positive cycle. I have the awesome advantage in that I love my job, and I cannot imagine being in a position where I don’t. But this is

not limited to profession, pay cheque or personal development; it is the choice to take pride in what you do and make the biggest effort to succeed.

SelfAs a 21st century people we often neglect to look after ourselves. We may think that buying new TVs, or driving a nice car is taking care of self, but it is so much more than that. This is the conscious decision to invest time in ensuring that the heart is whole, rested and self-loved. I am my own worst critic, and am very hard on myself; taking the time and energy to remember and celebrate my achievements goes a long way in keeping the positive self-cycle going.

So at the end of the day, cardiovascular health is not limited to getting the heart pulsing at more than 120bpm. Neither is it simply the controlled intake of calories by mouth. Heart health is inescapably linked to the condition of the mind and soul, and attention to this sphere of life may change your future. It certainly will mine.

Elephant Valley Lodge lies between the Chobe National Park in Botswana and the equally impressive Matetsi wildlife conservancy, south

of the Kazangula border crossing and within the Kasane Forest Reserve.

Sturdy acacias reach high above the camp, forming large canopies of shade, under which you will find 20 custom built meru style luxury safari tents. Given the concentration of elephant in this wildlife sanctu-ary, the camp is fenced and ensures peace of mind

whilst not limiting the cacophony of night sounds as you drift off to sleep after an exhilarating day of game viewing. The camp can accommodate a maximum of 40 guests in spacious and tastefully furnished tents, each features an en-suite shower and toilet, as well as tea and coffee making facilities, a fan and mini safe. Included is a family tent, of which the second bedroom is ideal for children.

Activities include daily safaris and boat cruises into

Every year, thousands of visitors quite literally find themselves in hot water at the Gooder-son Natal Spa Hot Springs and Leisure Resort.

Just nine kilometres from the historic town of Paulpietersburg and set in 550 hectares of beautiful KwaZulu- Natal bushveld amongst giant Cambrian granite boulders that are millions of years old, the resort offers beautiful views over the Bivane River, abundant bird life and plenty of activities and op-portunities to enjoy the great outdoors.

However, the main attraction is the warm pools which are fed by a natural, hot spring that surfaces on the southern approaches to the 1536m Dumbe Mountain. The thermal waters – known as “triple waters” - rise up along fault fissures and are heated at source to between 36 and 45 degrees Celsius.

They contain healing chlorides, sulphates and carbonates that are believed to help treat gastric ailments, digestive disorders, biliary, constipation, fibrositis, gout, rheumatism, insomnia, skin dis-

orders such as warts and relieve the stresses and strains of everyday life.

However, these restorative waters were not always recognised for their soothing effects. The ancient San people are rumoured to have avoided these healing mineral waters because it was believed that the river’s warm water and bubbles were created by a large black snake with an underground lair.

Oom Piet Wessels, who eventually laid claim to

the farm on which these pools were located, had different ideas. In 1888, whilst paddling around in the river during a stopover at the halfway point on the Groot trek between South Africa and the then Lourenco Marques, he soon realised that he’d come accross something special. To isolate the warm spots he’d found, Oom Piet placed sandbags in the river, paving the way for the creation of seven pools which are enjoyed to this day by guests at the Natal Spa.

Page 42: Locum Lifestyle Magazine Edition 6

42 LOCUMLIFESTYLE

He eventually bought the farm through which this warm river flowed with a little help from his boss, General Smuts. It soon became a centre for recrea-tion. During the Boer war in the 1900’s, soldiers used one of the rocks on the far side of the river for target practice. The pock marks are still visible.

The rich history of the battlefields and the happen-ings of both the Anglo Zulu and Anglo Boer wars during the 1800s and early 1900s add another special dimension to this already unique resort. A number of fascinating landmarks in the surrounds are worth a visit.

For the less historically minded, there are more con-temporary attractions such as quad biking, tennis, hiking, birding trails, horse riding, biking and fishing.

A 22km mountain bike and running trail as well as a BMX track were recently added. The new Battle-fields paint ball arena & obstacle course provides an exciting challenge and great team building exercise. There’s also a water park complete with a 45 metre super tube going into the pool near Boulders Bar,

two 20 metre high speed slides and even a sprinkler / splash park for kids.Guests stay over in 60 large, comfortably furnished en-suite bedrooms – these include 8 twin rooms, 30 family rooms, 11 double rooms, 8 luxury king size rooms and 23 self catering units. These not only cater for holiday makers but also for those using the resort’s conference facilities.

The Gooderson Natal Spa Hot Springs & Leisure Resort is known for its cuisine – “farm-style” break-fasts at the dining room and terrace, light meals at The Bistro and delicious a la carte and buffet din-ners. The Raptors Restaurant Bar and the Boulders Bar alongside the heated pools are perfect spots for sun downers.

TRAVEL - DRAKENSBERG

It’s hard to believe that, just four hours from Johannesburg and two and a half hours from Durban, you’ll find yourself in one of Africa’s most stunning

mountain wilderness areas. Taking its name from the distinctive mountain between Champagne Castle and Cathedral Peak that resembles a priest’s attire. Monk’s Cowl is the gateway to the Mlambonja and Mdedelelo Mountain Wilderness areas. The scenic Champagne Valley with its beautiful grassland, craggy mountains and crisp mountain air is home to Gooderson’s Monk’s Cowl resort which is known for its cosy atmosphere and warm log fires in winter. As soon as it snows, many city slickers who have never experienced snow before, head to the central Drakensberg and Monk’s Cowl to experience this spellbinding winter wonderland for themselves. The most wonderful thing about Gooderson’s Monk’s Cowl is that it is beautiful in every season. Year round, guests at the resort can enjoy the swimming pool and tennis courts. Within a 15 kilometre radius, there’s horse riding, paint ball, trout fishing, river rafting, quad biking and bowling greens as well as a bird of prey display

centre and the world renowned Drakensberg Boys Choir.Whether you’re in a hot air balloon or climbing a majestic mountain, you’ll wonder at the scenery with its rolling hills, diverse rock formations and caves that conceal some of the oldest and most fascinating rock paintings in Southern Africa. These document the rich culture of the San people, stretching back 400 years. Gooderson’s Monk’s cowl is within the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The region covers 242,813 hectares and includes the Royal Natal National Park. It is just a stone’s throw away from the Ehlabathebe National Park in the Kingdom of Lesotho. This is part of the Maloti-Drakensberg Park, a second UNESCO World Heritage Site. When surrounded by beautiful scenery, one of the best things to do is hike – and some of the best walks and hiking trails in the foothills of the Drakensberg are only a ten-minute drive from

Gooderson’s Monk’s Cowl. You can enjoy mountain trails that weave through the deep valleys and forests rising up onto the main escarpment of the Northern Drakensberg. Hiking routes vary from a few hours to several days and provide sufficient diversity to accommodate all levels of experience and fitness. Overnight hiking is available, but must be booked in advance. A three day hike that takes in Champagne Castle, Dragons Back, and the Cowl Gap is regarded as a training ground for adventurers looking to tackle Africa’s most treacherous peak, Mount Kilimanjaro. A slightly less strenuous pursuit – depending on your handicap of course – is golf. We have a nine hole golf course complete with a few dams and a river with a small waterfall plus swing bridge.

As this year draws to a close we are all planning our festive lunch or dinners and being with family,

friends or loved ones. When counting our blessings this year be sure to include: living in a diverse and rainbow nation; how lucky or blessed we are being part of a beautiful country. This is also a time to remember what exactly the festive season is all about. Spoil yourself and loved ones - take out the crystal and shine the silver. Personally I want a white Christmas, a true reflection of my year and my new col-lection, called New Beginnings.

My oriental inspired collection was showcased in Moscow, Russia, in Septem-ber 2015. When it comes to reflecting upon the year passed, I am grateful that this was indeed a great year for me with amazing opportunities I received. I trav-elled to New York, London and Moscow to find inspiration in all corners of the globe. I lost loved ones but also made new friends. I found the inspiration for New Beginnings from all these experiences and also from working with my clients, con-necting with different people around the world.

If you feel that your year was not as successful as you had planned, don’t worry. 2016 is around the corner. Count your blessings and cut your losses, we all have our ups and downs. Associate with positive people this festive season to add to your well being. You will be surprised on how positive people can change your outlook on life. My advice for this season includes: Buy that bottle of champagne that you desired throughout the year. Invest in the dress that you wanted months ago and if you can’t afford it, use your credit card. Spend, indulge and increase your spending desires, keeping in mind that you worked hard for it. If you celebrate Christmas, go for a theme for your table and go all out. If your budg-et does not allow for it, then make your own decorations. I personally put bows on the crackers to make them extra special. I love to go over the top but still stay classy. Do something that is you, something to fit your personality and environment. I mixed my table with everything I have, from sil-ver cutlery (a good investment) combined with Crystal glasses. Yes, it is special, but make a point of using the things that are special on a daily basis, make this part of

Festive Season FashionBy: Jacques LaGrange

your 2016 motto. For me there is no need to keep it hidden or to bring it out only once a year, to wait for that perfect moment is a waste of time. There is no moment more special than now.

I combined classic dinner plates with Mr. Price side plates. The centre flower arrangement is silver glitter with white flowers and I decorated the table with glass and silver balls. Notice that the centre piece is not too big so you can’t see over it, this makes for easy communication with your guests. Starch napkins are an absolute must. As mentioned before, I went all out this year, the table and the invitation is a gift in itself.

Nina, Anni and Nonks, our models, are wearing Jacques LaGrange COUTURE Haute COUTURE

2015/2016. They are styled to fit their personalities as they are all South Africans from different backgrounds. Anni is the glam-our queen, Nina is the laid back elegant and classic couture client. I put Nonks in a turban to make it more South African. She loves drama. It makes the whole mood easy wearable couture, yet over the top and cool and calm for our hot summer days. Invest in that party dress that suits your lifestyle and body type. Also think of wearing it to different parties and functions, styling it in different ways of course. Classic fits and styles with good fabric always work for me. Silk makes for a great garment as our South African holidays are extremely hot. If it needs alterations, go to a respectable tailor or seamstress. And seeing that you are the host to your special dinner party, wear

comfortable shoes. Never take your shoes off at any party. Never! Underwear must be a perfect fit and colour to match your dress or skin tone. Simple accessories and a classic hairstyle works. Festive colours are white, silver or gold. Invite your guests to also dress up to make your evening extra special. Do as much prepping before your guests arrive to prevent stress. Set the table a couple of hours before. Go over the place cards and decide who sits where. If you are single, get a bartender to help with drinks. If you can’t afford one, ask a friend. After all, the empha-sis is on time spent together.

I wish you all a peaceful festive season ahead. Don’t drink and drive. Call a taxi or get yourself a driver for the evenings out. Hope you have a magical festive season.

Stay clear from the spicy fragrances• A classic watch - time to show off that designer timepiece, wear a colour that compliments your Tux• Stylish shoes – a great Tuxedo deserves well-polished, stylish shoes to complete the look from head to toe• Well boosted confidence – make sure to wear your Tuxedo with confidence, walk like a man up straight with broad shoulders, chest out and stomach pulled in. YOUR PERFECT HOLIDAY PACKING GUIDEPlanning that perfect getaway break is always so exciting until it gets to “THAT” task: What and how do I pack?

International Image Consultancy, Chata Romano, has the answer to ensure you can create the maximum number of outfits with the minimum number of items packed. Our PACKING CHART for women and men provides practical tips on how to pack your bag perfectly for: various types of trips (business or leisure trips duration 2 days, 1 week, or 3 weeks) and different season; summer, winter or combination. It also eliminates the “just-in-case” scenario and ensures you wear at least 80% of what you pack.

PACKING TIPS• Before you choose the first item of clothing

remember:• Each item you pack should co-ordinate with

at least three other items to ensure versatility. (including the outfit you wear when travelling)

• Ensure the colours, styles and fabrics coordinate well.

• Pack more tops and less bottoms as people notice the top half of what you are wearing, not the bottom half.

• More plain garments and fewer prints as it is easier to mix & match plains.

• Don’t duplicate any of the items you pack (you don’t need two red t-shirts)

WHAT TO PACKWhen packing for your holiday trip, ensure you select 80% casual or leisure items and 20% smart or

evening clothes.Lay your clothes and accessories out on the bed before you pack so that you can clearly see your outfit selections.Start by choosing your jackets first, then bottoms, followed by your tops (plains first then prints). Finish off with shoes and accessories.

Here is an example of what to pack for a ONE WEEK summer holiday trip:20 items = 60 different outfits

2 Jackets:1 casual jacket – basic colour1 cardigan – basic colour
