LOCK & KEYSPECIFICATIONS
Most WBH locking products usethe ‘disc’ or ‘wafer’ type of lockcylinder, based on zinc-diecast
bodies of 12.5 mm diameter, with 5brass tumblers. Several lock
series are available, as illustratedhere, and we can also match
competitors key types (‘92’, ‘Ronis’,‘DLP’, and some Japanese and
American series).
Keys are normally steel, fluted, cut, stamped and barrelled before nickel-plating to 5 microns thickness. Thisensures smooth operation with no
sharp edges and good wear-resistance.
Lock products are made as ‘mixeddiffers’ (typically, 20 different key
numbers per 100 units) or ‘keyed-alike’,using a single, common key number. To special order locks can be built in
pairs, sets etc. Spare keys or ‘blanks’are readily available.
PIN-TUMBLERLOCKS
Special types of lock usemachined brass pin-tumblermechanisms, which allows
greater security and increasedcorrosion-resistance.
‘CUSTOMISED’KEY-HEADS
Where substantial volumes areinvolved, a customer’s name or
symbol can be ‘coined’ onto a steelkey, or created as a coloured ‘logo
disc’ within our large-size mouldedkey-heads. This can be done with
any of our key series.
MOULDED KEY-HEADS WITHNICKEL-SILVER BLADESAs an option, both ‘FS’ & ‘FT’ keys canbe supplied with nickel-silver blades forcomplete corrosion resistance. Thesekeys use moulded heads, in two stylesas shown, with key number stamped onjoining ‘strap’ or on separate stainlesssteel ‘tally’.The larger key-head contains a circularrecess which accepts a logo disc for afully-customised product. Anilluminated key-head of same size isalso available.
‘FS’ Key SeriesThese distinctive ‘hexagon’-headed keysare cut on one side only (‘single-entry’), and fluted on both faces sothat cylinders resist screwdriver entry. The range has 80 combinations(‘differs’) from FS 876-955, which canbe extended to 180, maximum. This is our standard series for handlesand small locks and cannot be master-keyed. Keys can be ‘coined’ with a logowhen volume is sufficient.
‘FT’ Key Series‘Coffin’-headed ‘FT’ keys are cut on bothsides (‘double-entry’) for greaterconvenience. The range has 75combinations (‘differs’) which can beextended to 180, maximum, in range FT101-225.This series is used for our more recentproduct designs and cannot be master-keyed.
‘S’ KEY SERIESA double-entry series used mostly in lockingfiller caps. It is similar to ‘FT’ but hasdifferent fluting and seven ‘cuts’, allowingup to 500 ‘differs’. It is used with speciallock cylinders having larger-sized tumblers, thus achieving higher levels of security forautomotive applications.

‘CONTRACT’DESIGNS
TO CUSTOMERSPECIFICATION
With 3D-design capabilty, WBHcan create entirely new
conceptual designs on a ‘contractbasis’ if volumes are significant.
The products are exclusive to thecustomer, with full tooling costs
being charged. Some recentprojects are illustrated here.
Proven ability to design andmanufacture latches and operatingsystems to meet most demandingspecifications.
Locks are manufactured using advancedcasting technology, with large number of designs already available. Ability tocreate new variants, including‘matching’ of other key types andexpertise in pin-tumbler assembly forhigher- security applications.
In-house polishing to the higheststandards and expertise in plating,powder-coating, and other finishingmethods.
In-house pressure diecasting, machining, and pressworkingoperations, with extensive experience of injection moulding and ‘foam’moulding techniques and all methods of welding and mechanical assembly.
WBH is approved to ISO 9001 standardsand meets quality requirements of major automotive manufacturers.
Door-hinge for the JCB backhoe excavator, madein composite materials and incorporating aninvestment-cast base-plate for welding onto door-frame. The complete hinge is over 300mmin total width and is an example of the structureswhich can be made in high-strength mouldedmaterials.
Emergency-escape systems for buses and coaches, manufacturedfor Percy Lane Products. Note: some versions are available forgeneral sale, subject to contract conditions.
Complete lock-set for London Taxis International, makers of the world-famous “black cab.” The set usesthe patented ‘CAPS’ high-security key system, which isavailable for incorporation into other locking products.

FINISHING TECHNIQUES
WBH has an unrivalled reputation for theappearance and high-quality finish of itsproducts. The following processes are operated, and we will recommend the most suitabletreatment for a particular application.
Clear zinc plating: Zinc with clear chromatepassivate, usually to 8 microns thickness. Gives abright finish and moderate corrosion resistance, suitable for indoor use, and can be applied toboth pressed and diecast parts.
Olive-drab: Higher-specification zinc finish,giving some 150 hours salt-spray resistance.Used for WBH lock cylinder barrels.
Corrosion-resistance can be improved byspecifying an increased thickness of zinc plating(up to 50 micron), or by sealing with sodiummetasilicate to achieve up to 500 hours salt-spray resistance.
Chromium plating: A technically demandingprocess, operated in accordance with BritishStandard 1224. All parts are carefully polishedin-house, before plating with copper, nickel, andfinally chrome. The thickness of the nickel layer(up to 25 microns) determines corrosionresistance, and can give many years’ service inall-weather conditions. Our top-quality polishingmethods achieve a mirror-finish on plated items(usually diecast, but also pressed-metal).Satin chrome and black chrome are specialrefinements of the above techniques.
Powder coating: A polyester powder is appliedelectrostatically, and is then thermally cured toproduce a semi-gloss paint finish (pre-treatmentwith chromate or phosphate bath is essential forgood adhesion). This gives good appearance ondiecast or pressed parts, with excellent corrosionresistance for exterior applications. Generallyblack, but almost any colour can be matched byRAL-International colour code.
Full-gloss or textured powder coating arerefinements of the above techniques.
Albufin: A decorative and wear-resistant finishin which diecastings are polished and platedwith copper and nickel before dipping in aspecial lacquer. After thermal curing thisdevelops a brilliant gloss, and a variety ofcolours can be achieved, including gold. Highly-suited to bathrooms, and top-of-range home andcommercial fittings.
Plastic-coating: Nylon or PVC can be bonded topressed-steel components; for instance grabhandles.
Encapsulation: Steel or diecast components(such as latch ‘claws’ or key heads) are placed ina die, and a moulded material is injected topartially enclose, or ‘encapsulate’ the part with atough, wear-resistant coating that improvesappearance and function
‘Foamed’ moulding: A relatively new process inwhich a solid ‘insert” is completely moulded-around with expanded polyurethane foam, to givea thick, resilient covering (see WBH grab rails,G1-4). The die cavity is usually etched with atextured finish, which is reproduced upon the‘skin’ of the moulding. Most colours can bematched by RAL-code.
Stainless steel: Can be polished to satin or high-gloss finishes. Can also be etched and powder-coated where totally “fail-safe” surface isrequired.
