The Mariposa Grove Muaeun is a one-story 1og structure measuting 20' x 45'and 1s dLvLded lnto tlro rooms, It ha6 a J-ow pltched gable roof coverednith rrood shLngles and lapped with a 24" exposure. The cabln 1s bu1lt ofpeeled sugar pine logs lald ln alternating tlers and interlocked at thecornera, and at the point vhere the partltlon lrall i.ntersects lrith theexterlor val1e, with a 'rVrr notch jolnt. The hotLzontal spaces betweenthe logs are chinked ldth tlght fittlng split 1og wedgee. A plank deck,45t x 12r, extends along the southweet side of the bullding. An exterlorchlmney is located on the aoutheast end of the cabln; lt is nade of granl.te1n a coureed rubble pattern. The southwest slde of the cablo has threewindows, the northeast slde has tiro, they are double hung, 6 x 6. Thereare three doors on the bulldtrlg, two on the southnest, one ofl the north-east, these are rqade of vertical boarde, decotated w"ith large false straphinges of unpalnted lron.

The j.nterior is donlnated by the fJ-replace of rough dressed granite ln theform of a segnented arch. It has doweled, random width oak floorlng. Theprlmary decoratlve elem€nt of the design of the cabin 1s the hand craftedfurnlture. There are rnasslve sequola rrood tables and benches, hand-planedand poLlshedr.wlth carved Indlan motifs whlch are stylized and . iwo-dineneional .The carvlng ls a very slmple expression of the Art Deco sty1e.

The museum possesses archltectural integf,ity which satisfies thecrlteria as ao expresslon of the Rustic sLyle, comblned wlth severaL nLnor elementsof the Art Deco sty1e. Galen c]-ark builc the first shel-ter--a rough one room cabin--ln the upper Grove 1nMay' 1864. He had recently been appolnted the flrst guardlan of the rryosenlte vall-eyand l"larlposa Blg Tree Grantrt, and erected the cabLn as an offl-ce/infonnation centerto assLet visltors. Dr. I{enry BelLows attached the nane rtcaLenrs Eospleer to thecabln ia June, 1864, after his party gained shelter there fron a storn. rr 1991, thestate of californl.a repJ-aced the ramshackle, Lhough r^7e11 knonn hospice, rdl-th a newone room cabln trfor the comfort and convenlence of the viaitor.t Another rogm wasadded in L902 eo serve as the office for the current guardl-an. rn the yosesltesuperlntendents Reports of the l-920rs, the deterlorating condition of the statebulldlng 1s noted, as well as lts lnternatlonaL fame achleved through photographs,postcards, and renembranees of Yosemlte tourlats that recorded the inpiesslon nadeby the srna11- structure anidst the giant trees. By 1930, a decision was reached toreplaee the unstabl.e 1og cabln wlth a new structure to serve as the Marlposa GroveMuseun. The exhiblts are devoted exclusLvel-y to the atory of the Blg Trees, hencethe cabio and its furniehlngs were deslgned to haroonize vith the suirounrlingsequoiaa. The maaslve furniture was hetred by hand fron a Blg Tree that had fallenin the lower grove.

Today the Grove l*lugeun contlnues to function as an lnterpretlve center as well as arest area fot vlsitofs arrlvlng by tran or on foot.
