Glazed ExpressionsOwner Laura RiegelAddress 8826 Swanson Blvd., ClivePhone (515) 224-4700Website www.glazedexpressions.comHow many years have you been in business? Fourteen fantastic years. We opened our doors in July 1999.

What made you want to open your business? Fear of corporate America, and I can’t be fired. I have always wanted to have an art studio where anyone could come and create. It also allowed me to spend time with my family whom I have employed.

What do you and your business bring to the community? Fun and lots of happiness. The studio is a place for people to come and spend quality time together. Making art is the icing on the cake.

Christopher’s Fine Jewelry

Owner Chris Seuntjens, Owner and Christine Osborne, General ManagerAddress 3427 Merle Hay RoadPhone (515) 251-4031Website www.christophersjewelry.comHow many years have you been in business? Thirty-three years. What made you want to open your business? After opening Coin World in Ankeny in 1980, we saw a need for offering fine jewelry and certified diamonds at fair prices. We then opened Christopher’s Fine Jewelry and Rare Coins. What do you and your business bring to the community? Christopher’s is the trusted, local source for beautiful diamonds and unique jewelry and fashion pieces. Our philosophy has always been a simple one. We ensure that our valued customers receive the finest crafted jewelry and highest quality diamonds that Des Moines has to offer at a fair and competitive price. What are you most proud of about your business? Besides being in business for more than 33 years, Christopher’s has the best selection of certified diamonds in Des Moines. We’ll take the time to educate you and help you choose the diamond that is perfect for you. Our selection of settings and engagement rings is one of the best of any Iowa jewelry store. And more importantly, we carry beautiful jewelry in every price range. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to select an attention-getting piece. What can people expect when they first walk in to your business? First, both new customers and customers who haven’t visited for a while will see a brand new, beautiful, remodeled store. Christopher’s Fine Jewelry used to share space with Christopher’s Rare Coins, however, a year ago, Rare Coins moved to a new location just behind the Fine Jewelry store and we expanded the jewelry space. A larger bridal area provides more choices for brides and grooms to select their perfect engagement set. Our expert sales staff is non-commissioned, so you won’t experience any high-pressure sales tactics. Our entire staff is here to answer questions and help you select a piece you’re comfortable with and will treasure for years to come. What sets you apart from your competition? Christopher’s offers the only value guarantee in Iowa. Our value guarantee ensures that any in-stock jewelry item will appraise for at least 50 percent more than its original selling price. For example, if you purchase an item for $500, Christopher’s guarantees that a retail appraisal from any retail jeweler will be at least $750, or we’ll give you your money back! Christopher’s is the only Des Moines area jewelry store to design its own line of custom jewelry pieces. “That special look” offers a wide variety of settings and hand-selected gemstones for a piece like no other. In addition, Christopher’s is excited to showcase our custom design capabilities by designing a custom piece that will be donated to the Bras for the Cause Gala auction in November. We are asking our Facebook fans to help us design the piece by voting on each step of the process. How do you want people to remember your business when they leave? We strive to make each customer feel comfortable, happy and excited when they leave our store — either excited about something they purchased then, or something they are thinking about coming back to purchase at a later time. We want people to feel free to come in and browse, ask questions and take the time to think about it if need be. We want everyone to truly experience and remember that Christopher’s is your trusted, local and friendly source for unique jewelry in every price range. What do you think can be done to improve locally owned shopping? We feel locally-owned shops should always stay current on issues and trends. At Christopher’s, we are always doing research and educating our staff on the newest styles, colors and fashion. Just because we are a city in the Midwest, doesn’t mean we can’t carry and offer what jewelry stores in larger cities around the country are offering. We try to stay ahead of the curve by selecting pieces not found in other Iowa stores.

Papa Kerns Cafe

Owner Garold KernAddress 2905 Hubbell Ave.Phone (515) 262-7692I opened the doors of my shop a little over a year ago. I was tired of taking orders and being told how to portion my food and run my business. I have always had my own ideas of how a family-oriented restaurant business should be run, and now I can do just that. With big portions of well-presented, free food, you never leave here hungry or broke. I make sure that we bring a clean and family-friendly dining experience to our neighborhood every day we open our doors.

We are very thankful for our wonderful and dedicated customers, who make us a come-as-you-are type of business with a relaxed and comfortable feel. They always tell me that our Ma-and-Pa-type setting, amazing breakfasts and prices keep new and old customers coming back week after week. We like to support our local community, and we hope that you choose to east local with us as well.

The Other Place

Address 12401 University Ave., ClivePhone (515) 225-9494We are a family-owned pizzeria since 1970. We pride ourselves by keeping with tradition using our made-from-scratch menu, great customer service and one-of-a-kind game day presentation. The Other Place was started in 1970 in Cedar Falls and was primarily a college bar that served and delivered pizza. The O.P. has since become widely renowned as a memorable part of the “college experience” by generations of UNI students across the country. The Other Place II and III were opened in 1976 and ’77 in Waverly and Evansdale, respectively. The ’80s brought two new additions to The Other Place family: Clear Lake in 1981 and Mason City in 1989. In 1991, Pepper’s Grill and Sports Pub was created in Cedar Falls. This unique sports-restaurant was the first of its kind and is considered to be an inspiration for many other similar restaurants in the area. In 1997, a new era for The Other Place began in Overland Park, Kan., a suburb of Kansas City. The Other Place turned back to Cedar Falls for its seventh location. The Other Place on University Avenue, otherwise known as “OPU,” was opened in 1999. The year 2003 brought the opening of the second Kansas location, this time in the city of Olathe, and 2012 brought The OP to Clive, where we proudly serve a new fan base. Thanks for making Des Moines feel like home. Now Come join us for a fresh pizza and cold beer.

Hinge Owner Kelsey MihalovichAddress 218 5th St., West Des MoinesPhone (515) 777-2770Website www.hingeon5th.com How many years have you been in business? This is my first year in business.

What did you do before you started your business? I graduated from the University of Iowa with a business and entrepreneur degree in 2011. After graduation I worked with Menards as a hardware manager.

How did you get into your business? I have always had a love for antiques and anything that has great patina and character. The one-of-a-kind pieces that come into my store each have their own unique story to tell. I wanted to create a store that would give these stories a chance to live and be appreciated.
