* Oppose those relying on external elements, acting as stooges, holding negative views* Oppose those trying to jeopardize stability of the State and progress of the nation* Oppose foreign nations interfering in internal affairs of the State* Crush all internal and external destructive elements as the common enemy

People’s Desire

The government is seeking all possible waysand means to supply adequate water essentialfor agricultural farming.

In order to meet the target, the governmenthas been constructing dams, sluice gates, andunderground water tapping stations. To be exact,so far, it has built 228 dams, 322 river waterpumping stations and 7962 underground watertapping stations and rebuilt a large number ofsmall dams and lakes. Those irrigation facilitiesbenefit over 3.6 million acres of farmlands.

Bawdi Tahtaung Dam near Laygyun SakkyaStanding Buddha Image in Khatakkan Village,Monywa Township, Monywa District, SagaingDivision, was put into commission on 31December 2009.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigationhas been constructing dams in various sizes foreconomic growth, regional development, boosting production of crops, and regionalgreening, one of which is Bawdi Tahtaung Dam.

The dam contributes towards the greeningof nearby regions, irrigates some 100 acres offarmlands, and supplies 30,000 gallons ofirrigation water and potable water a day.

In response to the government’s fulfillmentof requirements for further improvement in theagricultural sector, farmers should work hardto boost agricultural production to enhancenational economic development by efficientlyutilizing irrigation water and choosing qualityand high-yield strains of crops.

GAZA/RAMALLAH, 10 Jan — The Pal-estinian National Authority (PNA) on Sat-urday rejected a US call for resuming thestalled peace talks with Israel without pre-conditions, demanding a full settlementfreeze in the West Bank and East Jerusa-lem. Meanwhile, Gaza Strip rulingHamas movement warned the PNAagainst any resumption and cautionedthat Israel will be the only beneficiaryof the peace talks.

Chief Palestinian negotiator SaebErekat told Xinhua in a telephone interviewthat it is unacceptable, “since the US ad-ministration’s calls don’t include a totalfreeze of settlements in the West Bank andoccupied East Jerusalem, and don’t includea timetable for resuming the talks.”

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

on Friday said that the United States isworking with Israeli and Palestinian au-thorities, as well as Arab states, namelyEgypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, to resumethe peace negotiations “as soon as possi-ble and without preconditions.” Clintonmade the remarks after meeting JordanianMinister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Judeh, adding that Washington is to renew itscommitment and increase efforts in per-suading the parties to return to the talks.

The two officials called on the Pales-tinians and Israel to tackle the thorny is-sues of borders and the status of Jerusa-lem first, saying resolving the two issueswould automatically resolve the disputeover Jewish settlements in the West Bankand East Jerusalem, a major obstacle inthe peace process.—Xinhua

Shanghai targetseconomic growth rateof 8% in Expo year BEIJING, 10 Jan—Shanghai has set a

GDP growth rate target for the year ofmore than 8 percent, almost the same as2009’s economic development rate.

Party Secretary Yu Zhengsheng yes-terday announced the target at a one-daysession of the Shanghai Committee ofthe Communist Party of China.

He added the growth rate of value-added output from the service industryshould be much higher than the GDPrate. The city didn’t set a higher GDPgoal because it wanted to put more ef-fort into restructuring the economy thansimply seeking more GDP growth, Yutold the meeting.

The city’s GDP growth was esti-mated to be more than 8 percent last year,a little lower than the average nationallevel. Total retail sales of consumergoods rose by about 14 percent andgrowth of fixed assets investment wasaround 10 percent in 2009.

Yu said the targeted rate was a suit-able development speed for Shanghai, which was hit by the global financial cri-sis during its economic restructure tran-sition. He told the session that the WorldExpo 2010 Shanghai was the most im-portant task for the government this year.

two by two — and sometimes in foursand sixes as well.

The zoo's annual "stocktaking" tookplace on Tuesday, giving keepers achance to check on the numbers ofeverything from stick insects to tiger—and even a sex-change meerkat.

It was an essential opportunity todraw breath after a busy 12 monthswhich saw a host of new arrivals, including the first two lion cubs to beborn at the zoo for a decade.

Zoological Director David Fieldsaid: "It's a hugely important day. Ofcourse we are monitoring theinformation right throughout the year, but today we make sure that all ourfigures are correct to make sure weknow who is breeding with who andwhen."

While the trio of giant Galapagostortoises had a characteristicallyslow year, there was excitement inthe meerkat enclosure with the birthof Lia and her brother Roo — onlyfor Lia to become Liam five monthslater when she was found to be aboy.

"The gender of meerkats is oftenhard to establish immediately afterbir th," said zoo spokeswomanEmma Kenly. "But it was a nicesurprise for all of us when Lia'changed' sex."

They found someleaves had a higher pro-portion of deuterium, aheavy isotope of hydro-gen, on their surface andassumed those grew atlower elevations becausewater drops containingdeuterium would tend tofall first as clouds movedup.

LOS ANGELES, 10Jan—Combining regularexercise with cuttingcalories would achievebetter health outcomes, according to a new study.

“It’s better to loseweight with a combina-tion of caloric reductionand exercise rather thancaloric reduction alone,”said study author EnetteLarson-Meyer, an assist-ant professor of familyand consumer science atthe University of Wyo-ming.

Combining the two re-

sults in better health out-comes — such as lowerblood pressure and cho-lesterol levels — thansimply cutting caloriesalone, Larson-Meyer andhis colleagues found inthe study appearing in theJanuary issue of the jour-nal Medicine & Science inSports & Exercise.

For the six-monthstudy, the researchers as-signed 36 overweightmen and women, averageage 39, to one of threegroups. One group cutcalories by 25 percent.

The second cut calories byabout 12.5 percent andexercised enough to in-crease energy output by12.5 percent. A controlgroup simply stayed on aweight-maintenance diet.

At the study’s end, both the caloric-restric-tion group and the caloric-restriction plus exercisegroup lost about 10 per-cent of their body weight. The average weight at thestudy start was about178pounds, so the loss at theend was about 17 poundson average.—Xinhua

NEW YORK, 10 Jan—Livers from living donorsincrease 42 percent aftertransplant candidates re-ceived education on theprocess, US researcherssay. Officials of the UnitedNetwork for Organ Shar-ing says as of Jan. 30,2009, there were 100,539candidates on the waitinglist in the United Stateswith more than 15,000 in-dividuals in need of a livertransplant.

The number of de-ceased donors decreasedfrom 6,650 donors in 2006to 6,494 donors in 2007.

At the time of thestudy, New York state had1,947 individuals on theliver wait list, which rep-resents 12 percent of can-

didates nationally. In2006-2007, random sam-ples of wait-listed candi-dates at five transplantcenters in New York wereselected to complete pre-intervention surveys.

A second sample ofwait-listed candidatescompleted post-interven-tion surveys in 2008. “Paststudies have show wait-listed candidates concernsover donor safety, coupledwith their general lack ofknowledge about organdonation, created a reluc-tance on the part of candi-dates to discuss living do-nor liver transplantationwith family and friends,”lead author SamanthaDeLair, director of theNew York Centre for LiverTransplantation, said in astatement.—Internet

Vaccine may ‘mop up’leukemia cells

BALTIMORE, 10 Jan—Avaccine may help rid pa-tients of leukemia cells leftbehind by chemotherapy,US researchers say.

Dr Hyam Levitsky ofThe Johns Hopkins Medi-cal Institutions in Balti-more cautions the resultsare very preliminary andthey cannot yet rule outother reasons for success, but a vaccine made withleukemia cells seemed toreduce or eliminate the lastremaining cancer cells inchronic myeloid leukemiapatients taking the drugImatinib mesylate, orGleevec. “We want to getrid of every last cancer cellin the body, and using can-cer vaccines may be agood way to mop up re-sidual disease,” Levitskysaid in a statement.

The vaccine, which in-cluded the immune systemstimulator GM-CSF andleukemia antigen mol-ecules, was given to 19patients who had measur-able cancer cells after tak-ing Gleevec for at least oneyear.

A series of 10 skin in-jections were given everythree weeks. the processwas repeated four times.

The study, published inClinical Cancer Research, said after a median of 72months of follow-up, thenumber of remaining can-cer cells declined in 13 pa-tients, 12 of whom reachedtheir lowest levels of re-sidual cancer cells. Inseven patients, cancer cellsbecame completelyundetectable, the studysaid. —Internet

Or that so many others would getinto the hunt.

Glover went from a three-shot leadto a two-shot deficit in the SBS Cham-pionship, only to have his fortuneschange as quickly as the direction of thewind. Three birdies over his last fiveholes allowed him to salvage a 2-under71 and a one-shot lead over defendingchampion Geoff Ogilvy going into a fi-nal round with endless possibilities.
