Close to 60 peopleattended a lateafternoon cocktail

party at Eddie’s Restaurantas a fundraiser for BarackObama, a front-runner forthe Democratic nomina-tion in the US presidentialelections in 2008. The ideacame from two big fans ofthe senator from Illinois:Boston lawyer RichardBranson and LucySalenger, who lives inChicago near Senator Oba-ma. Together, and duringthe vacation they enjoyevery year in Saint Barth, they decided just twoweeks ago to organize this

cocktail party in support ofObama’s campaign for theDemocratic nomination—a campaign which contin-ues to grow stronger andwhich faces a major hurdleon March 4 when the pri-maries in Texas and Ohiotake place.

Coordinator of the event,Richard Branson quicklygave the floor to LucySalenger, who confirmedher thoughts about herneighbor: “He’s outside, what he is inside.” Next tospeak was Gene Robinson,a reverend from NewHampshire, who spoke

about his personal contactwith Obama and theimpression that the senatorleft after discussions thatthe two men had together:“He has the capacity fortrue change, to break withthe current political gamethat leaves 49% of thepopulation on the sidelinesin order to serve the other51%,” confirms Robinson. He then proposed thateach person present donatehalf of the cost of a week’srental in Saint Barth. Nextup was the principalspeaker, Marvin Zonis, professor of internationalpolitical economy and

leadership the Universityof Chicago. He spoke onthe theme of “Leadershipand Barack Obama.” Afervent supporter of thecandidate, the professorexplained to those presentwhat he understood leader-ship to be, and how Oba-ma appeared to be the bestcandidate to deal with themany challenges facingthe United States—bothinside and outside of itsborders.

Last Saturday, JennyStening revealed thedesign of a hand-

some book that will be pub-lished this summer, andwhich is dedicated to theSwedish buildings in Gus-tavia. Entitled “Gustavia: AHistoric ArchitecturalPromenade,” the book waspresented at the SwedishDesign Center, a localshowcase for Swedishdesign, which will distributethe book. Edited in threel a n g u a g e s — F r e n c h ,Swedish, English— thebook is presented as anarchitectural and historicguide to colonial Gustavia, focusing on the period from1785 to 1878 when theSwedish flag few on theisland. “ It was during this

period that Gustavia wasbuilt and took on the form itstill has today,” notes theauthor, who is also an archi-tect and is known on theisland for the Swedishwalking tour she developedin 2004 for the formermunicipality and which

resulted in the book. PerTingbrand, the retiredSwedish lawyer, consideredthe most important historianwhen it comes to theSwedish past of Saint Barth, and Arlette Magras, a localhistorian, have both read theprofs. The book, expectedto be available next sum-mer, most likely in August, contains 120 pages illustrat-ed with plans and designs

from the archives in Swe-den and in Saint Barth, aswell as photos that theauthor has taken since 1994,the year that she came toSaint Barth for the firsttime, after a transatlanticsailing trip with her family. How did she develop thisserious interest in Gustavia?“This is one of the rarecolonial cities built by Swe-den. As a Swede and also anarchitect, I had to have beeninterested,” says Stening, whose architectural thesis in2001 was on the formertown hall—a building fromthe Swedish era in SaintBarth.

Eugénie Blanchard, known by the nick-name “Douchy,” cel-

ebrated her birthday on Sat-urday, Febraury 16. At age112, she became the oldestwoman in Overseas France, and second oldest woman inall of France. For the occa-sion, a reception was held inher honor on the patio of theDe Bruyn Hospital in Gus-tavia, where she has livedsince 1980. For those who do not knowher, Eugénie Blanchard wasborn on February 16, 1896in the Merlet neightborhoodof Saint Barth. She took thename Sister Cyria Costawhen she entered a conventin Curaçao. It is said that her

nickname, “Douchy,” comesfrom a childhood deforma-tion of the word “ducle” orsweet in Spanish Exiled for33 in the capital of the DutchAntilles, Douchy returned toSaint Barth for the first timeat the age of 60. She lived inthe family house in Merletuntil she was 84, but almostblind she moved to the hos-pital in 1980 and has livedthere ever since. She doesnot hear or see very well, butstill speaks a little. She doesnot receive any medicaltreatment, and is the last ofher 12 brothers and sisters tosurvive. She does not haveany direct descendants, butquite a few relatives come tosee her regularly.

The captain of the boat,Balaju, which is regu-

larly anchored at the QuaiGénéral de Gaulle, willappear in police court dur-ing its next session. OnMonday, February 18, thewater of the harbor was pol-luted with waste water cov-ering roughly 300 feet, notto mention the bad odor thatcame with it. From theirpost in the immigration

office near the ferry termi-nal, the gendarmes couldsimply follow the offendinglayer on the water directlyto the boat which caused theproblem. The captainimmediately admitted hiserror, which according tohim had been an accident inmoving the waste waterfrom one tank to another. He will have to explain tothe court.

“If you can’t go tothe cinema, thecinema will come

to you.” In keeping withthis slogan from CinéWoulé, the organizers ofthe Saint Barth Film Festi-val plan to show some oftheir films and videos inone or two different neigh-borhoods of the island dur-ing the 13th annual festi-val, which takes placeApril 25-30, 2008. Thelocations and programhave not yet been decided, but the idea was finalizedduring the recent visit ofJean-Marc Césaire, whocame to Saint Barth at theinvitation of the organiz-ers, Ellen Lampert-Gréaux, RosemondGréaux, and Joshua Harri-

son. Césaire is the founderof the association, CinéWoulé, which has traveledfrom town to town in

Guadeloupe projecting 35films as well as videos oninflatable screens since1995. Jean-Marc will

return to Saint Barth dur-ing the festival for a fewitinerant screenings. Healso has another idea he’dlike to see come tofruition: open a cinema inGuadeloupe dedicatedexclusively to art films, asthat does not exist. “To doso, we need a distributionnetwork to project the

films and allow us to sharethe costs,” he explains. Hisdream is that each French-speaking Caribbean island, including Saint Barth, bepart of this network. “Itin-erant projections are agood way to attract peoplewho would never go to themovies otherwise,” headds. The organizers of the StBarth Film Festival arealso collaborating withCiné Woulé as a means toproject videos in large for-mat and good technicalconditions, something thathas been difficult in thepast. “The projections ofthe video, Memories OfOur Past, last year illus-trated the limited technicalmeans we have to projectv i d e o s , ”says Lampert-Gréaux”Ciné Woulé, which hasmany different projectorsas well as inflatable andtransportable screens, canreally help,” she adds, nothiding a desire to add newspectators after slightlylower attendance at thefestival in the last twoyears.

Out of service sinceAugust 2006, theRapid Explorer fer-

ry started up again on Feb-ruary 19, under new man-agement, Om Express, andwith a new port of embarka-tion. They used to leavefrom Philipsburg, but thenew route for Saint-Martin-Saint-Barth is now fromOyster Pond, twice a day,

seven days a week. For thetime being, the 40 to 45minute trip is made by justone boat, Sea Shuttle, whichcan carry 90 passengers.“There might be a secondboat in the future, but fornow we are focusing on thecomfort of the passengers,”notes Raymond Kalley ofOM Express, who hopes toget some of the airlineclients, rather than pull fromthe clientele of the Voyagerferries. “There are a lot ofpassengers in transit to SaintBarth who do not like smallplanes and the landing inSaint Barth. For them, thecomfort of a boat is veryimportant and that is whywe offer real seats, an air-conditioned cabin, and avideo system is in theworks,” he says. OMExpress also set theirtimetable in conjunction

with the afternoon flights:“Most of the large planesarrive at Juliana around orbefore 3pm. Our 5pm tripallows people to get to Oys-ter Point without rushing, but also avoids a long wait.

We can also organize thetransfer from the airport tothe ferry if the request ismade at the same time at thereservations.” For additionalinformation: www.rapidexplorer.com
