As of March 3, 2008 all new vehiclesregistered on the island will have anewly designed license plate, which

marks the passage of Saint Barth to aFrench Overseas Collectivity. The licenseplates will be specific to island with SBH—the initials for Saint Barthh—on the leftside of the plate, plus up to three numbersand one to three letters. At a meeting onFebruary 12, the territorial council dis-cussed the possibility of also allowing per-sonalized plates with a combination of let-ters and numbers. The new license plates concern only thosevehicles to be registered in the future: exist-ing ones will not be replaced. However, thenew system is for all vehicles, not just carsbut also two-wheelers, which until nowwhere not registered, as well as constructionvehicles. Additional information is availablein French on the COM’s website:www.comstbarth.fr and a special email hasbeen established for questions: [email protected].

To bring an objective opinioninto the passionate debateabout the price of gasoline

on the island, the non-profit associ-ation Saint Barth EnvironmentAnd Sustainable Development, which has always defended theposition of using fuel with a levelof benzene of less than 1%, recent-ly analyzed the fuel sold in SaintBarth. Two samples of lead-freegasoline were tested: one inDecember and one in January. Both samples were sent to a labo-ratory in France for analysis. The results were made known inthe past few days: “the level ofbenzene was comparable in bothsamples and slightly higher than0.6%. These results are also com-parable to those measured duringfuel tests in France, where theaverage is between 0.5% and0.6%,” reassures the association ina press release dated February 16.They are “reassured” in that thefuel sold in Saint Barth definitelyhas a level of benzene less than1% as called for by the law. Theyadd that “taking into account pos-sible health risks—benzene is verycarcinogenic—the top limit of 1%should not be put into question, especially if it is just to save a fewpennies at the pump.”

As a reminder, since directive N°98/70/CE of the European Parlia-ment and council went into effecton January 1, 2000, the fuel dis-tributed in France—and inEurope—should not contain morethan 1% of benzene, a substanceknown to be carcinogenic to sucha point that high levels of inhala-tion can cause death. It wasn’tuntil 2004 that the law wasapplied in Saint Barth, yet SaintMartin still sells fuel that is doesnot meet the standards of the law.

1% and soon lessin the USA

In fact, in Canada, the 1% rulefor benzene has been in effectsince July 1, 1999 in keepingwith their concern for publichealth. In the United States, incontrast to what is frequentlyinvoked by certain elected offi-cials, starting with the president, the level of benzene neverexceeds 2% and is usually closerto an average of 1%. A directiveof the Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) in the US calls forthe reduction of this level to aceiling of 0.62% by 2011. Inreality, only third world countriesactually still use fuel with a high-er level of benzene.

She continued tovisit over the years and hasnow written a book basedon a walking tour of thesignificant Swedish build-ings and monuments inGustavia, a project shecompleted in 2004. The book serves as anextended guide to herarchitectural and historictour of colonial Gustaviawith a focus on the periodof 1785-1878 when theisland was under Swedishrule. It was during thisperiod that the town ofGustavia was founded.“The book begins with anintroduction that presentsthe island in a wider per-

spective and introducedthe reader to the fascinat-ing town of Gustavia,”note Nils and SusannaPassburg. “Taking a strollin this compact town, withits one-way streets andurban character, is a goodway to discover itsidentity.”The sign oneach build-ing in thebook tellsthe story ofthe struc-ture, fromits historyto its archi-tecture.

Long considered transporta-tion for those without cars, the bicycle has made a

comeback as a popular means oflocomotion, with many peopleback in saddle for ecological rea-sons. In Saint Barth, the topogra-phy of the island doesn’t lend itselfto bicycle travel very well, but abicycle could become an interest-ing new way to discover Gustavia,or other parts of the island forthose who are courageous enough. In any case, that is the hope ofAlexandra and Markku Härmälä,who opened a new company calledSun Velo a few weeks ago, in col-laboration with tour guide HeleneBernier of Easy Time. They offer abicycle rental service, from hourlyto monthly. At the moment theirfleet is comprised of a dozen Trekbicycles, lightweight hybrids thatcan do off-road riding as well asadapt to urban travel. Alexandra,

who has an ecologicaloutlook, came upwith the idea a whileback, “but it tooktime to take shape,”she says. A SaintBarth native, Alexan-dra hopes that peoplewill take the time todiscover the island ina new way, by ridingoff the beaten path. But that’s not all: she

also hopes to influence the mental-ity of the residents and show themthat a bicycle can contribute to theglobal ecological balance, as wellas the local ecology, “vital foreveryone.” To help their clients, Alexandraand Markku have designed itiner-aries at all levels—from easy todifficult. “It’s also a good way toexercise,” says Alexandra, whoadds that a bicycle is a great way toget around Gustavia. Sun Vélo alsohas bicycles for sale.

How to reach them? While waiting to find a locale inGustavia, Sun Vélo can be reachedby telephone at 0690 63 46 09 or0590 87 18 56, as well as by emailat [email protected] or [email protected]. The bicycleswill be brought to you whereveryou are staying.

MARINE PARK: END OF YEAR REPORT

◗ Marine turtles: The holiday period closedwithout drama for the numerous marine tur-tles that frequent the entry channel to theport, in spite of the numerous boats that movein and out, sometimes at excessive speed. And it was necessary to remind people on adaily basis that the speed limit in the portzone is three knots. The entry channel has alot of marine plant life, making it Pan idealspot to find food for the primarily femalegreen sea turtles. They swim underwater butmust surface regularly to breathe and can berun over by boats that are going too fast, notgiving them enough time to dive back intothe water. By going slower, one can respectthe turtle population and even take time toadmire them.◗ Fourchue and Colombier: The bays ofFourchue and Colombier were under assaultduring the end of year holidays. The marinepark was also busy here reminding peoplethat the speed limit was still just three knotsthroughout the entire port area, for the securi-ty of swimmers as well as the turtles found inthe sea grasses and marine plants in these twobays. These underwater prairies serve asnurseries for fish from the nearby reef, forfood for the turtles, and housing for numer-ous species such as starfish and sea horses. Itis forbidden to anchor in these areas as not topull up the plants. ◗ Where to anchor: the best moorings? It isbest to use the buoys provided by the marinepark or anchor outside of the protected zones, and in sand if possible. You want to “insure”your mooring? Avoid tying up to a buoy anddropping your anchor. It is better to attachdirectly to the mooring as well as the buoy.

On a visit to Saint Barth, JulietteBécot presented PatrickGranier—the director of

Match supermarket—three wines thatshe produces in the vineyards ofchateau Beau-Séjour Bécot: theChâteau Beau-Séjour Bécot (premierGrand Cru class B), the ChâteauJoanin-Bécot (Côtes de Castillon) andthe Château La Gomerie (Grand CruSaint-Émilion).Located on the plateau of Saint Martinde Mazerat, directly to the west of theold city, Beau-Séjour Bécot is in theheart of the Saint Emillion region. Thisbeautiful property produces less than100,000 bottles per year, with roughly35 acres of grapevines, predominantlyMerlot (70%), with the remainderCabernet-Franc (24%) and Cabernet-Sauvignon (6%).These three wines seem to go per-fectly with any meal you can imag-

ine, as they are not too heavy or toosweet… rather they have just theperfect mix of lightness and richness.Quite a discovery! These elite bottles will soon be foundon the wine lists of various islandrestaurants, as well as at Match.

Most people know MartineLainé for the paintings shehas exhibited several times

in Saint Barth. This time Martine isrevealing a different side of her artis-tic personality: she also works withtextiles to create patchwork quilts. Infact, she has done patchwork for thepast 27 years and has also been ateacher of this textile art. She made her first quilted bedspreadwhen her daughter was born, usingpieces of fabric she collected. This artform quickly became one of her pas-sions, along with painting. She organ-ized the first exhibit of patchwork inGuadeloupe and began teaching, whilealso successfully participating innational and international competi-tions. In 1996, she participated in thefinals of the International Quilt Festi-val in Houston, Texas. In 1999, shecreated a patchwork for ChristianLacroix, then in 2000 she took part inthe International Patchwork Competi-tion Chartres, followed by the Interna-tional Quilt Festival of Tokyo in 2003,

before competing in the competition atthe lace museum in Retournac. At the moment, Martine is in SaintBarth where she is showing her mostrecent patchwork as well as somepaintings she has not yet exhibited—on the theme of flora. The exhibit, which runs from February 22 throughMarch 2, is at the large space ofMétéo France, near the lighthouseabove Gustavia.

Their inaugural flighttook place on April 20, 2007, atwhich time the airline and thegovernment of the Dutch side ofthe island had hopes to rapidlyexpand the flight to a daily basis.
