LOCAL NEWS AND VIEWS FROM BARTON TOWN COUNCIL

Please support your local shops and businesses

The voluntary members of the committee are well underway organising Barton’s amazing and unique annual ‘Bike Fest’ based on the same successful format as in previous years.

The event certainly puts Barton on the map with 1000s of visitors travelling from all around the country and even overseas as the event has become a very respected motorcycle gathering that many look forward to. This annual social night is ‘one not to be missed’.

We are pleased to receive financial support from the Town Council and commercial sponsorship from Lindsey Relay, Euronics, as a main sponsor along with the pubs, cafes, food outlets and local businesses supporting the event.

Barton Rotary, Barton Lions and Barrow Rotary along with local residents are once again marshalling with professional cover supplied by TSS Events of Lincoln.

Several of the local pubs including The Old Mill, The Coach & Horses and The Red Lion will have live bands playing to keep you entertained and the town’s array of food outlets once again will be well stocked and open late.

North Lincolnshire Classic MC are providing some live action staging the very popular Trials Display in the Cottage Lane car park along with many trade stands set up around the streets selling and showing motorcycle related product.

We hope to have a few Barry Sheene bikes on display in the Market Place and on High Street Custom Bikes with around the corner in Queen Street the very popular show of Classic and Vintage bikes that attract many visitors both young and old.

The North Lincolnshire Deputy Mayor and the Town Mayor will be attending, judging and presenting a trophy for Best Classic Bike on show.

We are looking forward to a great night and invite you to come along and enjoy this free community event run by a dedicated team of volunteers.

The Club marshalled and helped facilitate the walk across the Humber Bridge in memory of Archie Roberts from Barton who was sadly born asleep. Kelly Roberts organised a sponsored walk and locals came out in high numbers and raised £3457.32 for the charity SANDS, half of which went to support the baby unit at Scunthorpe.

On April 1st Barrow car boot sale was well supported despite the very cold conditions and the Rotary food stand did very well plying all with hot teas and coffees and bacon butties.

A big thank you to Spencer Engineering at Barrow for allowing us to use their yard for the car boot sale if the playing field was too wet.

Three refurbished computers have been presented to Beach Farm Care Home,

Barrow, for the use of the residents. President Peter Towle is

shown in the picture with care home manager Richard Bye. All the computers were generously donated by Mark van den Bos and refurbished by Chris Richardson, both of Barrow.

A further refurbished computer was presented to a local man to help him keep in touch with friends from the comfort of his own home while a fifth was presented to the Orkidz pre-school play group in Queen Street, Barton.

A cheque for £250 was presented to the Candlelighters cancer group and three wheelchairs were supplied to Mobility which is Rotary’s charity. A local person was given financial support to help with transport to visit their very poorly child in hospital.

LIVES received a cheque for £1,800 raised from the football match and auction at the Royal Oak with Paul Finnis and his gang working hard both before and during this event to create a great result.

Next on the agenda is the Rotary Car Show on July 20th and a fun and car boot day on July 21st.

A shoe box appeal is planned for August with more details on how to get involved and help being released very soon.

Barrow Meridian are organising a performance by the Louth Male Voice Choir at Holy Trinity Church on July 12th starting at 7pm. Tickets, costing £6, are available from Sergeants Butchers and the Post Office in Barrow or by contacting Graham on 07853381347.

been given an annual facelift by a very kind chap called Joe, so thank you to him

The 2012 -2013 Season has now concluded and we achieved three teams who won their leagues.

The Eric Kelstad Memorial Trophy, which is awarded for commitment, was this year presented to Howard and Judith Dunderdale.

During the closed season we hope to have some major works done at the ground but we hope to run our usual Summer School for the under 5 age group of boys and girls.

BARTON CIVIC SOCIETY

Early in the year, members of the Society undertook an inspection of Fleetgate and its environs with the North Lincs` regional officer for Neighbourhood Services with a view to effecting some improvement here. We drew her attention to the poor state of the street, in particular the dirt collected in the gullies and against the walls of houses. We restated our view that this could only be remedied by closing the street to traffic on certain agreed days so that it could be thoroughly cleansed. We also visited the Haven and pointed out the supermarket trolleys that had been dumped in it and the detritus strewn on its banks. This was not only unsightly but unsanitary, having implications for health and safety. These matters were subsequently referred to Barton Town Council at a meeting that was attended by the reporter Shaun Ringwood who wrote up our concerns in the issue of the Scunthorpe Telegraph for 21 February. However, there is

clearly more work to be done here.

We have devoted two sessions to tree maintenance. In March, we attended to some trees in Bowmandale, pruning them and removing tree-guards that were no longer needed. In April, we removed the guard from a cotoneaster in Hungate and eliminated unwanted lateral growth from the central stem. During the same session we planted a copper beech on Beck Hill, a good specimen that should do well in this situation.

We have strimmed and cleared undergrowth at the rail-bus interchange. By the time this goes to press, we will have done some further work, clearing rubbish, pruning trees and shrubs, and treating some of the area with herbicide, so as to

allow the subjects we planted last year to thrive. We are keen that this part of the town should give as good an impression as possible, since it is the one that many visitors to Barton see first. To this end, we would welcome help from a small band of volunteers, so that the improvements we have made can be maintained. Anyone interested, please contact Roger Johnson at: Maplewood, Finchley Close, Barton (tel. 01652 635296.)

The Society has been active in liaising with North Lincs to get some of the town`s urban pathways requiring attention adopted by the Council. Much work had been done by the Society in previous years, reviewing and mapping these pathways and documenting details of their condition. We will now need to collect signatories from users of these ways to confirm their long-standing use.

Bartonians will have noticed that plaques have been erected on some of the town`s significant buildings: East Acridge House, where the novelist Henry Treece lived; 46, Westfield Road, once the home of the novelist Ted Lewis; Baysgarth House, formerly home of the Nelthorpe family; and the magnificently refurbished George Hotel, at one time the town`s premier coaching inn.

Our public meetings are held at 7.30 in the Assembly Rooms. Bryan Longbone will be giving a talk entitled `150 Years of Cleethorpes: A Rail & Social View` on 21 June, and Geoff Bell will be kicking off the Autumn season on 20 September with `Stories in Stone`, on the subject of alabaster, which was mined extensively near Nottingham and from which many church monuments were carved. Our AGM is on 19 July; it is open to all, and prospective members are particularly welcome. For further information, visit www.bartoncivicsociety.co.uk.

Performance in the Park 2013

Three theatre companies will be delighting the crowds this summer with the return of the Performance in the Park season.

This year two new companies will be performing in Baysgarth Park alongside the returning Storytellers Theatre Company.

The season begins on Sunday, July 14, with the London Contemporary Theatre’s Around the World in 80 Days. Music, puppetry and a lot of laughter is promised as Phileas Fogg wagers a bet he can travel around the globe in just 80 days along with his faithful French servant Passepartout. The journey takes him on an adventure of a lifetime travelling across the four continents by what ever means he can.

On August 11 the Storytellers Theatre Company return to the park with its hour long performance of Peter Pan and the story which is sure to captivate all who watch and listen as the Storytellers transport the audience to Netherland.

The final performance is on August 25 with the Cambridge Touring Theatre’s production of the classic tale, Treasure Island which promises to be a swashbuckling musical adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s tale of buccaneers and buried gold.

Performance in the Park is staged by the Barton Tourism Partnership supported by Barton Town Council and Barton Lions. All the productions in the 2013 season are suitable for all ages Free to the public, bring along a chair, a picnic and enjoy live performance in the beautiful surroundings of the park. Refreshments will be available at Baysgarth House Museum raising funds for the museum.

St Mary’s Bellringers,

Barton-upon-Humber

The AGM of the St Mary’s Company of Bellringers was held in St Mary’s ringing chamber on Tuesday 5th March.. Tower Captain, Andy Bennett, chaired the meeting and welcomed everyone including Revd. Ivan Rowett who has recently moved to the area after his retirement and is now a member of the St Mary’s Company of Bellringers.

Revd. David Rowett thanked the bellringers for all they do throughout the year saying that the ringing of the bells for services and the diverse number of other church events was appreciated. He informed the meeting that replacement of the west window of the tower had been delayed by the requirement for additional paperwork because of the type of glass required, but he assured the meeting that work will still be carried out in due course.

The following officers were elected Tower Captain - Andy Bennett Vice Captain - Geoff Bryant Ringing Master - George Thompson CPVA - Sue Thompson Steeple Keeper - Linda Howden Secretary - Rose Lennon Treasurer - Linda Howden Publicity Officer - Joan Barton

All the ringers congratulated George on his appointment as, possibly, the youngest Ringing Master in the Lincoln Guild. Andy thanked all the officers of the tower for the time they give including Jenny for all the work she had done as Ringing

Master over the past year and also the fact that she agreed to assist George as required in his new post until he has finished his exams.

St George’s Day was marked in Barton by the ringing of the bells for half an hour before normal practice on 23rd April. The band rang a course of St. George Bob Minor which was called by Ringing Master, George Thompson – a suitable celebration, all the more so because that particular method had not been previously rung by the band.

A group of ringers from St Mary’s attended the AGM of the Lincoln Diocesan Guild of Church Bellringers held on Saturday 27th April. The day included a business meeting followed by lunch then ringing at Stow, Saxilby and ending up at Lincoln Cathedral where it is always a pleasure to ring. A day out enjoyed by all those who attended.

The monthly practice of Surprise methods continues to be successful and on Sunday 5th May the following Quarter Peal was rung to consolidate the learning. Well done George! Lincoln Diocesan Guild

SAMARITANS Local Samaritans seeking Friends in Barton

Almost sixty years ago (on the evening of 2nd November 1953) an old Bakelite telephone rang out in the Parish Office of St Stephen, Walbrook – an Anglican Church in the financial district of the City Of London. The call was answered with the words “Can I help you?” by an old Son of Barton on Humber, Dr Chad Varah. It was to be the first call to The Samaritans and Chad was the founder and very first volunteer.

Chad Varah founded an organisation and registered charity that now has 201 branches located throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland with 18,500 volunteers, 54 of whom volunteer at the North Lincolnshire branch based at Lindum Street in Scunthorpe.

Samaritans is available to anyone, anywhere in the country 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Every year many thousands of people in distress call to talk about their most painful thoughts and feelings and the charity now answers one call every six seconds.

Chad Varah was awarded the CBE and made a Companion of Honour for founding The Samaritans, but he never forgot his roots and spoke fondly of his home town to colleagues and acquaintances whenever he had time and he was delighted when a local branch of Samaritans (Scunthorpe & DIstrict) was founded almost fifty years ago.

In memory of one of Barton-on-Humber's most famous Sons your local branch would like to explore ways and means of forming a Friends of Scunthorpe Samaritans group in the town and we are very keen to hear from local people who may be interested in joining and running such a group.

Friends Groups are like-minded people who value and respect the work of Samaritans and demonstrate a willingness to support their local branch in raising funds and awareness within the community. Typically, they organise two or three events per year like Coffee Mornings or Afternoon Teas, Barbecues, Quiz nights, Fayres or collections, and help distribute publicity material. In return they receive full recognition and invitations to Samaritans branch events – and huge amounts of appreciation too.

Would you be interested in supporting a Barton Friends of Scunthorpe Samaritans group? It's a good way of bringing people together to do something really worthwhile.

To register your interest please e-mail: [email protected] or telephone the Scunthorpe Samaritans office 01724 860000 on Wednesdays after 1.30pm please. Or for more information and a no-obligation chat, please telephone Lynne Atkin on 01652 632569.

BARTON SCHOOL COUNCILS’ FORUM VISIT THE CIVIC CENTRE IN SCUNTHORPE TO

MARK THEIR 10TH ANNIVERSARY

Barton School Councils’ Forum was formed in 2002 after a suggestion from a Castledyke pupil at one of their school council meetings. The group was formed in order for the children of Barton to be able to share their concerns and ideas relating to the community in which they live. As a way of marking our 10th “birthday”, a visit was arranged with the help of donations from Barton Lions and Barton Town Council to meet the Mayor of North Lincolnshire, Cllr. Ivan Glover and his wife at the Civic Centre in Scunthorpe. Here are some words from some of the children involved:-

On the 27th February 2013, children from Castledyke, Bowmandale and Barton St Peter’s primary schools were invited to go to the Civic Centre in Scunthorpe to meet Mr Ivan Glover, the Mayor of North Lincolnshire. The children from our school council had to be at school by 8.30am and we walked up to Castledyke to get the bus, which Barton Lions had paid for. The bus arrived at 9.00am. We were invited to meet the Mayor as it was the 10th anniversary of the Schools Forum (which we attend in Barton every term). When we got there we were given cake and juice, after that we went to the council chambers and took it in turns to ask questions to the Mayor of North Lincolnshire. These questions had been thought up by other children from our school and included topics such as who Mr Glover was and what his interests were and his jobs as Mayor. We found out he lives in Broughton, this is because he likes having the countryside around him; we also found out that a person can only be Mayor once. He rates

Barton ten out of ten as a town.

Abbie Coupland & Sam Sheekey Barton St Peter’s Year 6 School Councillors

We enjoyed our visit to the Civic Centre very much. We also enjoyed being able to meet and ask the Mayor lots of interesting questions about his role as Mayor of North Lincolnshire and about what happens at the council meetings. It was very interesting.

Bowmandale Primary School Council

The school councils of Barton visited the North Lincolnshire council meeting place. The part I enjoyed the most was when we went into the room with the fancy microphones and leather chairs. I enjoyed asking the Mayor questions to find out what his job was like. Great morning out. I would go again and I wish I could. Rating 8/10.

Alex Thames Year 6 School Councillor, Castledyke Primary School

As we head towards the summer, the South Bank Players are just completing their first Variety Show tour which has seen them perform at Brigg Catholic Church, Kirton-in-Lindsey Town Hall, Willerby Methodist Church Hall before finishing at East Halton Village Hall. The group performed songs, sketches and dances spanning the 1920’s to the 1970’s to appreciative audiences. As well as this the group assisted with the Victorian Day at Wilderspin School where an enjoyable day was had by all who attended. The next performance by the South Bank Players will be their full length Sherlock Holmes play “The Hound Of The Baskervilles”. Adapted and dramatized by Tim Kelly and based on the story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, it has been referred to as “Professional, witty and suspenseful…Conan Doyle would be pleased!” This tale of mystery and suspense will take place at The Ropery Hall, Ropewalk on Fri 11th and Saturday 12th October. The show will start at 7.30pm each evening with a licenced bar available prior to the show and at the interval. Tickets will be on sale soon from The Ropewalk Information Office, and the chairman of the group – Mr Dennis Bloor (tel: 01469 531003). Shortly after this performance the group will once again take to the streets with their “Barton Ghost Walk” which commences at 7.30pm outside Baysgarth House Museum on Halloween. Booking is advisable for the Halloween walk by contacting the Chairman – Mr Bloor. Wrap up warm, dress in costume, bring a torch and bring a friend…..walk the streets of Barton – if you dare!!!! For more information on any of our events or to join the group – new members are always welcome! Please check out our website at www.southbankplayers.weebly.com where you can contact us via the “Contact Us” page, alternatively email us at [email protected] and ask to be added to the mailing list of upcoming events by the group. Finally, on behalf of all members of the South Bank Players, we would like to thank those involved once more on putting on

the Barton Bike night and wish everyone a very enjoyable evening!

Barton Female Football Referee Wins National Award

Jenny Pullen who is well known to all the local football teams in Barton and the wider area of North and North East Lincolnshire has won a National F.A. Carlsberg Women Referee Award For Outstanding Performance and Contribution to Refereeing, for her work in grass roots football. This award has only been introduced this year and so Jenny becomes its first recipient. Jenny commented “It’s a great honour to just get nominated for the awards especially by those with whom you officiate but to win the award is truly amazing and is beyond my wildest dream. I have to thank all those within the game locally and especially the other officials in the area who have helped me so much in my development. I would also like to thank Lincolnshire FA for all the support they have given me”. Jenny first became interested in becoming a referee following a visit to the Lincolnshire F.A. stand at Lincolnshire Show when they were actively encouraging females to become referees and took one of their courses at Scunthorpe. Jenny is active within many areas of football in the local community. For several years she has been interested in British Sign Language and has gained several qualifications which has allowed her to help a local profoundly deaf young man gain his referees qualification. This has also led on to her interest in Disability Sport and she has trained to become a referee within the football aspect of that sports programme. Jenny also mentors newly qualified referees, attending their games giving them support and feedback on their performance on the field. Jenny has also recently trained to become a tutor for referees and is also working to progress through the different levels within the referee programme which would allow her to officiate at higher levels within the game. Jenny will be picking up her award at the England vs Scotland game in August at Wembley Stadium. “ It is a fantastic opportunity to visit the National Stadium and I am looking forward to experiencing the Wembley atmosphere during one of the oldest international fixture.” There is an ever growing interest in football locally with the junior clubs as well as the older players and so if you have an interest in becoming a referee then why not contact Jenny via [email protected] or contact Lincolnshire F.A. web site http://www.lincolnshirefa.com/ were future course information is available.

The Rotary Club of Barton-upon-Humber

A very big "thank - you" to all of there people that donated gifts of items for New Born Babies. They were collected at The Ropewalk and the quantity and quality far exceeded our expectations. Some people had knitted baby clothes and we received many Babygrow and other items of clothing. Many people had bought feeding bottles, soap and baby - powder.

Barton Rotary Club President, Michael Knapton said " We were amazed how much was given, again showing the generosity of the people of Barton. We really thank all who helped with this and the Ropewalk who allowed us to have a collection point there". Each Barton club member had already filled two ShoeBoxes for babies.

The goods have now been delivered to a Rotarian at North Ferriby, who has taken them to a Rotary Club near Manchester, whose volunteers deliver the Rotary ShoeBoxes to Romania. They are then assisted by Romanian Rotarians there to distribute the boxes. This shows the International strength and co-operation between Rotary Clubs. Collecting items for new born babies, started at Christmas in Barton, is now becoming a Rotary district and possibly a national project.

Barton Rotary Club members and helpers spent a Sunday morning clearing litter from areas not served by Council Staff. Over 20 bags of rubbish were collected from the Western end of Westfield Road, a place frequented by many walkers and two areas visited by Tourists, plus The Beck and the Interchange on Waterside Road.

In the Park, many people will have noticed the many Spring Flowers around trees and Blue Bells in the Park Extension behind the Pool. These have been planted last Autumn and in earlier years by David Witter and other Rotarians.

Following very bad winter flooding, one hundred LifeStraws, donated by Barton Rotary Club, have been given to the people of a village called Leticia in Colombia. The LifeStraws are used to suck up contaminated water, which is cleaned by the filters in the tube preventing E-coli and Salmonella illnesses. They were distributed by local Colombian Rotarians.

Six Barton Rotarians helped five athletes at the Rotary District Disability Games in Barnsley, supporting the team from Brigg Rotary Club. Rotarian Mark Ding, who organised the Barton members, said "The athletes that we helped all did very well in the competitions, which included Darts (which we won), Curling, Archery and Snooker. They were full of enthusiasm and it was a privilege to assist them".

Barton Rotary Club has helped Barrow Band to purchase 25 Music Stand Banners. The band, conducted by Neil Ringrose, works hard to teach eighteen young people to play a range of instruments. The banners will be used at the band's Summer Concerts.
