In 2017, riders entering St. Paul on the Green Line will be greeted by a sight a decade in the making: a $54

million building that bears the words "Saint Paul" in large letters along its roofline.

On Tuesday, St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman joined representatives of Flaherty and Collins Properties, the

Metropolitan Council, Minneapolisbased UrbanWorks architects, KrausAnderson construction, and a St.

Paulbased affordable housing developer the Local Initiatives Support Corporation in breaking ground on

the sixstory mixedincome housing development.

The officials acknowledged that plans for "2700 University" and even developers had switched up since early

conversations in 2007, when Wellington Management envisioned a ninestory office tower and grocery store.

The site is next to the Metro Lofts building and in front of the 808 Berry Place apartments. St. Paul has been

transitioning the former industrial land to new uses for a decade or more.

Of the 248 apartments at 2700 University, about 50 will be set aside as affordable rentals for people who earn

50 percent or less of area median income. The rest of the studio, onebedroom and twobedroom units will rent

for market prices, which are estimated to be $1,400 to $1,500 on average.
