Picking a WinnerWe closed the office for the afternoon a couple of weeks ago and set out on our first ever staff trip out - to Haydock Park for the races. It was to be the day of the underdog - there were six races and none of the favourites won – proving how difficult it is, even for the so-called experts, to pick a winner. Hopefully you will have had better luck than they did with your bet on this weekend’s Grand National!

Speaking of winners, we have a few in this issue of Local Life. We interview one of West Lancashire’s most famous residents, someone who is known as football’s Mr Nice Guy, Roberto Martinez. And more importantly, we have the winning team behind the transformation of Gaw Hill, near Aughton, into a notable nature reserve. Do pop down to the reserve with the kids and take a look at the work being done to develop the reserve, which is just a few yards away from the busy A59.

Hopefully by the time you read this, Spring will have finally sprung, and the planning for the summer events will intensify. Remember, if you are involved with planning a Spring or Summer event for a school, charity or community group, you can depend on us to publicise your event free of charge in Local Life – just email details to [email protected].

See you next time – stay lucky!

Love Ormskirk are looking for local residents to volunteer their time for a couple of hours to help with a big clean-up of the town centre.

MethodHeat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Sift the flour and salt together. Rub in the butter until the mixture is like fine crumbs. Stir in the sugar and raisins or sultanas if using.

Gently warm the buttermilk (don’t throw away the pot) and vanilla in a microwave or pan. Using your largest bowl, quickly tip in some of the flour mix, followed by some of the buttermilk mix, repeating until everything is in the bowl. Use a knife to quickly mix together to form a dough - don’t over-mix it.

Tip onto a floured surface and lightly bring together with your hands a couple of times. Press out gently to about 4cm thick and stamp out rounds with a 6cm or 7cm cut-ter. Re-shape trimmings, until all the dough is used. Place scones evenly on to a lightly floured baking sheet or two.

Add a splash of milk into the buttermilk pot, and then use to glaze the top of each scone. Bake for 10-12 mins until golden and well risen.

To Make The Fruit Compote:Place as much of the frozen fruit as you need in the sauce-pan, on a gentle heat on the hob on top of your cooker. Simmer the fruit until it starts to soften; stir gently now and again just enough so that the fruit does not stick to the pan; do not allow it to burn.

Now add sugar to taste - not too much at first. Taste the fruit as you add the sugar so that you do not make it too sweet or leave it too tart. Take care not to burn yourself when testing it! Fruit and sugar get very hot.

Once the fruit has softened, but before it turns to a pulp or goes too mushy, it is ready and you should remove it from the heat to cool.

It keeps for 2-3 days in the fridge.

It will run at the Ormskirk School on Wigan Road in Ormskirk on Thursday, Friday and Saturday April 18-20th starting at 7-30pm. This new production, opens our tenth anniversary celebrations, and follows the success of ‘That Terrible U3A’ (2011) of which one reviewer wrote that it was “the best advert for the University of the Third Age you could ever wish to see” with “beautifully crafted songs (that) deserve to grace much more nationally important stages than the Civic Hall”. Roberto’s love affair with football started when he was just a nipper. He played his fi rst competitive match for his home town team, CF Balaguer at the age of nine, before moving to Real Zaragoza at the age of 16. In 1995, Dave Whelan brought Roberto to Wigan, where he completed the trio of Spanish players known at ‘The Three Amigos’. Roberto spent six years at the club as a player and was part of the Latics team that won the 3rd Division in 1996 and also played a part in their Football League Trophy win in 1999. After spells at Motherwell, where he met his wife Beth, and at Walsall, Roberto moved to Swansea, a club where he began his managerial career in 2007.In his fi rst season in charge Roberto led the Swans to a League One champions win, and in 2009 he re-joined Latics, this time as Manager. With Roberto at the helm, Latics have managed to confound the pundits by staying in the Premier League, sometimes by the skin of their teeth, and are now looking forward to a historic visit to the new Wembley Stadium for the FA Cup semi-fi nal against Millwall.Roberto currently lives in Hilldale, near Parbold, with his wife Beth.

First memory you haveMy fi rst memory is of playing football with my dad. We always played football together, I remember we played on the beach and I must have been about 2 years old!First school you attendedThis was Carmelitas Catholic School in my home town of Balaguer; I loved school and I was a good student. The only time I ever got into trouble was after PE lessons when we kept playing football instead of going to the next lesson.

Last week Local Life caught up with Roberto Martinez, the Wigan Athletic boss, at Sharpy’s Fish & Chip Restaurant at the DW Stadium.

First job you had This was a work experience post when I was training to be a physiotherapist. I worked for 3 months in my local hospital and I only got paid after I took on some private patients after I had fi nished my training.First car you boughtMy fi rst car was a Renault R5; I paid £2,000 for it and I loved it! It had that many gadgets I thought it was just like the Knight Rider car.First house you boughtI bought my fi rst home in Balaguer and I have actually never lived there! I bought it just before I became a Wigan player in 1995.First pub or club you visitedI was 18 when I fi rst visited a pub; I went out with my team mates from Real Zaragoza and I had an orange juice! I have always been tee-total; I think the last drink I had was a glass of champagne at my wedding. I love all the little pubs in Hilldale and Parbold though.First record you boughtThis was the sound track to the fi lm Ghost; I was obviously feeling romantic that day! I like easy listening music really, and anything modern. At the moment I like listening to Emilie Sande.First best friend My best friend was a boy named Joseph Maria. We lived next door to each other and I blame him for always being late for school; we were always too busy kicking a football! I am still in touch with him, but we don’t get in so much trouble these days!

FirstFirst kissMy fi rst kiss was with a girl I went to school with, I can’t remember her name! She was older than me, so I think it’s fair to say she was giving me the kiss instead of the other way round.Last restaurant you visitedI went out my wife Beth to the High Moor Restaurant in Wrightington. We had an outstanding meal and we will defi nitely be going back. I love eating out, it’s fantastic to get out, enjoy great food and spend time together.Last DIY task attemptedI tried to fi x the desk in my offi ce; let’s just say it hasn’t been fi xed! Beth does all the DIY, but I do love to try. When I retire, I am going to fi nish all the jobs I don’t have to time to do now!Last fi lm you watchedI love fi lms; the last one I watched was Looper starring Bruce Willis. I watch all types of fi lms when I get the chance; it’s a great way to switch off, for 2 hours all your problems are gone.Last disagreement you hadMy answer to that would be every day! Whether it’s at the training ground or sorting out schedules, there is always something to sort out and sometimes it ends in a disagreement.Last time you went shoppingI hate to say it but Beth does all that too! I’m not a big fan of shopping really unless it is to buy the latest gadget; I get a bit excited then. I’m not keen on spending money really.Last holiday you hadBeth and I went to Poland last year. I only told her after it was booked that I would be covering the Euros for TV too! We did a bit of sightseeing though in the local museums though and we visited Auschwitz too.Last sporting event you attendedI was at the Wigan vs. Everton match at Goodison Park for the quarter fi nals of the FA Cup; I believe the away team played very well!

Ever since it was fi rst invented, man has been fascinated by the hot air balloon. Today, hot air ballooning is an incredibly fun activity enjoyed by many people from all over the world. If you’re looking for tranquillity and a spectacular view then this might just be the hobby for you!It doesn’t just take a pilot and passengers to get things of the ground – there is also a need for a ground crew whose role is crucial to help launch the balloon into the air and help it safely home. Indispensable for every fl ight the ground crew begin by assembling the balloon and laying it out on the launch site. At the fi nish they sometimes help by guiding the balloon gently down to the ground and assisting in packing everything away. In between, they follow the balloons’ path by road, observing the progress of the fl ight and keeping in touch with the pilot by radio. When starting out, retrieve crews usually follow behind the path of the balloon as closely as possible on available roads. More experienced crews will try to get out in front of the balloon, anticipating its path; letting it come to them and watching it land. After the packing away comes the celebration of a successful fl ight, the sharing of the experience, sights and stories.

With a hot air balloon team the sky really is the limit and there is a group in West Lancs that are on the lookout for new volunteers. The team is looking for a driver who must be over 25, able to tow a trailer and have a clean licence. The team would also like to hear from anyone interested in becoming a navigator; all they ask is that you are physically able to help with launch and packing away of the balloon. Full training will be given and you might get chance to go up in the balloon too!Usually the team fl y very locally, but there are opportunities to go away with other aeronauts for a weekend of camping. All fl ights take place at dawn or at the end of the day and are very dependent on weather conditions. If you are interested in getting involved in this fascinating, sometimes challenging and ultimately rewarding sport and would like to know more please contact [email protected]

April 2013 heralds a new era and many people are not even aware of it. The recession and the resulting government cutbacks will mean that from April this year legal aid will not be available to most people in relation to family law matters such as divorce or unmarried separation & disputes regarding children.

Legal aid will only be available in very limited circumstances and subject to stringent conditions and criteria which will leave many people without access to justice at a time when they probably need the most help. The only exceptions to the new rules will be if you are the victim of relatively recent domestic violence at the hands of your ex-partner and even then proof will have to be given of that violence before legal aid will be granted to you.

As a result of the changes being brought in, many fi rms across the region will not be offering legal aid services to clients. The limited availability of legal aid and the viability of the new arrangements have left solicitors with little choice but to follow this course of action. This may mean that many people will now feel they do not have access to expert legal advice in relation to family law matters at one of the most diffi cult times of their lives.

My name is Mrs Alexandra Fowler and I have been proud to offer legal aid services throughout my career and it saddens me greatly to see so many people now being unable to obtain legal advice, at what is often the most stressful period of their lives.

My fi rm, Dickinson Parker Hill Solicitors, has taken the decision to offer a fi xed fee half hour interview for £30 plus vat (£36 in total) to enable clients to get affordable access to a solicitor when they need it most.

I may not be able to offer much more than preliminary advice at that appointment – but hopefully I can point you in the right direction and give you some indication about what you should consider doing (perhaps pointing out things that you hadn’t even realised you needed to know), what your options are and how much it might cost you.

We can even discuss payment plans, allowing you to budget for your case.

Don’t be in the dark – get the right advice for you!

To arrange an appointment call Alex Fowler on 01695 574 201 or email her at [email protected].

George Osborne presented his Budget on Wednesday 20th March 2013. His main budget proposals are as follows :-Personal taxFor those aged under 65 the personal allowance will be increased from £8,105 to £9,440 from 6th April this year, rising to £10,000 from 6th April 2014. For over 65’s, personal allowances are to remain the same at £10,500.The basic rate of income tax is currently 20%. The band of income taxable at this rate is being reduced from £34,370 to £32,010 so that the threshold at which the 40% band applies will fall from £42,475 to £41,450 for those who are entitled to the full basic personal allowance. The additional rate of tax of 45% is payable on taxable income above £150,000.New scheme for tax free childcare* A working family with 2 children could receive up to £2,400 every year in support. *New tax incentives for childcare have been announced. To be eligible, families will have to have both parents in work, with each earning less than £150,000 a year and not already receiving support through Tax Credits or Universal Credit. The relief will be 20% of the costs of childcare up to a total of childcare costs of £6,000 per child per year. The scheme will therefore be worth a maximum of £1,200 per child. The scheme will be phased in from Autumn 2015.Pensions savingThe annual limit for obtaining tax relief on pension contributions is to drop from £50,000 to £40,000 for tax year 2014 /15 onwards.Annual Investment AllowanceThe AIA provides a 100% deduction for the cost of plant and machinery purchased by a business up to an annual limit. The Chancellor announced in December an increase in the limit from £25,000 to £250,000 for a period of 2 years from 1st January 2013.

Business TaxesThe main rate of corporation tax for companies is planned to drop to :-• 23% from 1st April 2013 • 21% with effect from 1st April 2014• 20% from 1st April 2015 The small company rate will remain at 20%.National Insurance - £2,000 employment allowanceThe Government will introduce an allowance of £2,000 per year for all businesses and charities to be offset against their employer class 1 NIC liability from April 2014. What the Silicon Valley is to technology, the Douglas Valley is to food, so it’s not surprising that residents of West Lancashire head east when in need of a good feed! The Dicconson Arms in Appley Bridge, The Star in Roby Mill and The Wayfarer in Parbold have all picked up awards for the quality of their food. The newest member of this exclusive club is the Stocks Tavern in Parbold, which was once the haunt of village ne-er do wells, but is now laying down credentials for the rest to follow. It’s been a long while coming, the building has been standing since 1810 on the site where the village stocks once stood and local miscreants were pelted with rotten pears, but the word is out that The Stocks Tavern is the new place to eat in 2013!Local guy Gareth Caunce, who formerly worked across the road at The Wayfarer, was an ex-regular at the Stocks and when he was offered the chance to manage the pub by a well-respected local businessman, he snapped it up. Focusing fi rst on the beer, Gareth has built up the Stock’s reputation for real ales; the pub appears in the Good Beer Guide for 2012 and 2013, and they have just been awarded CAMRA Locale status too. With so much competition, Gareth knew that he needed a top chef to attract local diners, and wee Glaswegian

In the StocksMarti Cameron was top of that list. Marti’s impressive CV includes a spell at the plush Rusacks Hotel in St Andrews and the Head Chef’s position at Rigalettos in Wigan. More recently, Marti was the guy who transformed the fortunes of The Star at Roby Mill and then he joined the staff at Wigan Athletic, working as Head Chef at their Christopher Park training ground.

The grand opening of Sally’s at The Stocks happened a couple of months ago and performing the honours on the night was Latics manager and local resident Roberto Martinez. We waited til the fuss had died down and went

to Parbold to check out The Stocks Tavern. This is the classic friendly village pub; cosy, with open fi res, welcoming smiles, beamed ceilings, great atmosphere and a couple of little private nooks for the romantics amongst you. The choices on offer were plentiful; there’s an a la carte menu, an Early Diners and even a Ramblers menu. Just as we’d warmed up, our starters arrived.

I started the night with Sally’s Scottish Salmon, Chilli and Herb Fish Cake, served with petit coriander salad with a tomato concasse. Spicy, packed with a hell of a kick, this dish wakes up your taste buds with the culinary equivalent of a Glasgow kiss! Don’t forget a squeeze of lemon to add a bit of zest too. Just as you think you can’t take any more, the tomato concasse comes along to add a soothing balm to your palette. Meanwhile, my partner was tucking into her starter – A Wedge of Brie encased in herb encrusted breadcrumbs accompanied by a plinth of salad, and served with plum

and onion chutney. The smooth and creamy Brie was a delight to savour, and the fruity chutney contrasted perfectly. The salad was tasty too and both plates were completely cleared!Like many people, we’d cut back on food after Christmas, and we were spoilt for choice at Sally’s though with so many exciting dishes on offer. In the end I plumped for the Pan Fried Medallions of Pave Beef Rump Steak, which duly arrived stacked in a tower of sweet potato and roast root vegetable mash and surrounded with stroganoff sauce. Reader – it was gorgeous! Please note that if I ever end up on Death Row, make sure this is my last meal. Infused with rosemary, the tender beef was exceptionally tasty, the mash was chunky, but not too chunky and the sauce was rich and juicy. This meal was accompanied by some delicious new potatoes and fresh winter vegetables too. Whilst tucking into my feast of a main course, I did wonder why my dining partner was silent. It turned out that she was completely fulfi lled with her own choice of main course, which was the Oven Roasted Breast of Chicken, stuffed with Mozzarella and Garlic Mushrooms. This was a deceptively large and tender portion of chicken, with the skin crisped up beautifully, and was complemented perfectly with plentiful curls of the most exquisite Parma ham and a very light but tasty pesto sauce. To top it all, she’d ordered an extra side dish of heavenly chunky home cut chips!Stuffed, warm and hugely contented, we sat back in pleasure at polishing off those two delicious main courses. Ahead was dessert, and purely for research

purposes (!), I ordered a single homemade Apple and Honey Crumble with Crème Anglaise.A generous portion arrived, big enough for two, and topped with a strawberry. It was really tasty, the natural sweetness of the honey really shone through, and the Crème Anglaise was super too. But really and truly, we were stuffed.Put aside any perception you had about the Stocks, and make room on your ‘Places to Eat’ list for the Stocks Tavern. But the word is out, so move quickly – this cosy country pub with fantastic, home-made food at very reasonable prices sits just 60 diners at any one sitting and pre- booking is likely to be needed to secure a table!

Gorse Hill Nature Reserve is situated on the slopes of Gaw Hill, a sandstone ridge just yards away from the busy A59 at Christ Church in Aughton. The Reserve is managed by North West Ecological Trust, a local charity which manages and continues to develop the 120 acre site for the benefi t of wildlife. It was established in 1996 and volunteers have created wild fl ower meadows, mixed woodlands, heathland, ponds, wetlands, a vegetable plot, an orchard, native hedgerows and reed beds. These all provide habitats for wildlife. Public footpaths run through parts of the Reserve and are open all year round. From one such path on the sandstone outcrop, there are wonderful views in all directions – Welsh Hills, the Lancashire Plain, the coastline and the Cumbrian Hills.

Aughton’s Best Kept Secret

The meadows have traditionally been managed for hay which is sold to local businesses. They also provide a profusion of wild fl owers including clover, meadow buttercups, cowslips, vetch and ox-eye daisies, attracting a variety of butterfl ies, bees and insects. The native woodland includes beech, oak, rowan, scots pine and willow. These together with over 90 nest boxes provide homes for many birds – tree sparrows, willow tits, yellowhammers and goldfi nches amongst others. Bird surveys have shown over 50 species of bird including several on the RSPB’s red or endangered list. Around the perimeter of some of the woods, volunteers have been learning how to lay hedges to provide better protection for nesting birds. For conservation reasons, some woods are closed to the public and can only be accessed by prior appointment. The grasslands and hedge borders are also home to wood mice, shrews, fi eld and bank voles. With the help of experts from Edge Hill University, it has been possible

to identify some of these species and monitor their populations through regular mammal surveys. An organic orchard was established in 2005 to preserve heritage culinary and dessert apple trees with such names as Keswick Codlin, James Grieve and Howgate Wonder. There are now more than 20 varieties of apple trees in the orchard. The Visitor Information Centre, recently refurbished with the help of Lottery Funding, gives access to the woodland walk in Cabin Wood. This beautiful walk will take visitors to one of many ponds, which is home to smooth, palmate and great crested newts. Great crested newts are a protected species that are fascinating to watch but can only be handled by trained licensed holders.Local school groups , Brownies, Scouts and Beavers all make good use of the Reserve for guided walks, poetry writing, pond dipping and environmental badge work.Various art works can be seen in Cabin Wood too. Local

chainsaw carver Peter Freeman has produced a totem pole depicting some of the wildlife around the Reserve – buzzard, blackbird and newt. Another local artist, sculptor David Woodward is currently working on a sandstone/multi-media sculpture of a tawny owl with funding from the Arts Council. Whatever the season, there is always something magical at the Reserve - the stillness of a cold Winter’s day, the blossom appearing in the orchard in Spring, the wildfl owers blooming in Summer and the red, yellow and orange of Autumn leaves. Come and see for yourself and marvel at what nature can provide!Visitors and volunteers are welcome on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 9.30 am -3.30 pm at Holly Lane in Aughton (L39 7HB) or contact the Reserve Manager Jonathan Atkins ([email protected]) or call 0151 531 0067/1659. Hilldale& Hunters Hill

Hunters Hill to Cedar FarmPark up in the car park at Hunters Hill. Enter the site via a horse stile by the wooden gate, turn right then take a direct left and follow the footpath that runs parallel to the wooden fence. The views to the right are fantastic on a clear day and you can see Liverpool, Southport, Blackpool and beyond.Keep to the path which eventually descends out of the site. The footpath changes to a dirt track; follow the track downhill and it eventually becomes Hillside Avenue in Hilldale. When you get to the end of the road, turn right onto Chorley Road, and carry on along the footpath for 400 yards. Once you reach Springmount Farm on the left, cross over the road and hop over the stone stile where the public footpath symbol is. Walk through the small field for 130 yards until you reach Grimshaw Green Lane.Turn right and follow Grimshaw Green Lane for 300 yards until the junction with Malt Kiln Lane. Turn left and follow Malt Kiln Lane for 450 yards ignoring the public footpath sign on the right. Just before you reach a couple of brick semi-detached houses, take a right turn down a dead end road which leads to Sills Farm. Follow this road for 200 yards then take a left turn at the public footpath sign and go across the fields.Follow this path in the same direction for ¼ mile until you cross a stile and take a few steps down to Back Lane. Turn right down and follow this quiet country lane for just over ¼ mile until you reach Cedar Farm. Turn right into the car park at Cedar Farm. Cedar Farm is a good stopping off point on

Parbold is a well-known mecca for local walkers, who frequent the village each weekend from Spring to Autumn, bringing custom to the pubs and cafes in the village. This walk focuses on the area directly north of Parbold; Hilldale, Bispham Green, Mawdesley and the lofty Hunters Hill quarry, from where you can catch some magnificent views of Lancashire’s countryside. The walk isn’t a long one by Jack’s Tracks standards – just 4.6 miles – but there are a couple of killer hills to experience and your calves will be aching come Monday morning!

the walk; there is a café and also a rather nice coffee house too. Be warned though, the coffee house is that comfortable, that you won’t want to get up after a drink and some cake!Cedar Farm to Hunters HillResume where you left off and head down the path on the right hand side of Cedar Farm. You’ll spot a footpath sign in the far right hand corner. Go left through the gate and follow the path until you reach a track. Turn left again and follow the track for 225 yards until you reach Back Lane once more. As you exit onto Back Lane, turn right and you’ll spot a public footpath signpost 50 yards away. Hop over the stile and follow the path which runs parallel to the line of the trees. When the trees end, carry on in the same direction, heading towards the metal gate. Cross the stile next to the gate and then turn right. You’re now on a quiet country road called Moody Lane. Follow Moody Lane to its conclusion 450 yards later with the

Page 38: Local Life - Ormskirk & Aughton - Apr/May 2013

junction with Bentley Lane. Turn left and then first right, heading up a no-through road in the direction of Lower Gauges House. You’ll follow this road, mainly uphill, for 550 yards. Follow the track as far as you can possibly go; and when it bends to the left near the black metal railings there is a gate. Go through the gate which takes you up a narrow footpath with a stone wall on your left. When you get to the top of the path, hop over the little stream and cross the stile. Once you have crossed the stile, take an immediate left turn uphill and then cross the next wooden stile. Try and spot a well hidden public footpath symbol on the telegraph pole to the left, but in any event stay on the left hand perimeter of the field by the wooden fence, heading uphill all the way. Hop over the next wooden stile, again keeping to the left hand perimeter of the field. Once you’re halfway up the hill, the fence will start to veer to the left; carry straight on the path towards the stile in the distance by the perimeter of the woods. Unless you suffer from vertigo, take a look behind you at this stage – there’s a breath-taking panoramic view of Lancashire on offer! Cross the aforementioned stile and follow the fenced path uphill through the woods. Once you reach the stone wall, bear right and head over the large wooden stile. Once you’ve negotiated the stile, turn right downhill. It’s worth mentioning that if you fancy seeing the disused Harrock Hill windmill, then turn left at this point and it’s a couple of hundred yards distance in the other direction.

So, you’re heading downhill at this point. When the path forks bear right, and cross the wooden stile into a field. Head downhill down the left hand perimeter of the field, dodging the gorse bushes and you’ll end up at the bottom left hand corner of the field. Cross the stile, and head straight on down the concrete path. Bear to the right and follow that path until it meets the public highway 300 yards later.Turn left down Jackson’s Lane. A few yards further on, you’ll come to a fork in the road; bear right and follow Jackson’s Lane for a further 200 yards until you reach the junction with Bannister Lane. Turn left and head up a steep hill, for a calf- straining 500 yards until you reach the car park. If you want a rest (and you will want one at this point, I can guarantee), take a right turn just 40 yards short of the car park entrance and follow the pathway which leads to a couple of benches where you can have a well-earned rest and take in the magnificent views once more!

Please ensure you wear appropriate clothing and footwear whilst walking. Whilst every care has been taken to ensure that the walk is accurate, neither the publisher or its editorial contributors can accept, and hereby disclaim, any liability to any party to loss or damage caused by errors or omissions resulting from negligence, accident or other cause.

This popular nature reserve is now under the ownership of West Lancashire Borough Council, who have introduced paths (including one suitable for wheelchairs), bridleways and parking on the site. Since reaching the end of its working life in 1982, the site has naturally regenerated and is now a haven for wildlife. Fossils dating back to the Carboniferous Period (a mere 293 million years ago!) have been found on the site.

The nearby quarry, which is still under private ownership, was worked for its sandstone for 200 years. Since it was flooded through in the 1950’s, the lagoon has attracted day trippers from as far away as Liverpool , particularly in hot weather, and there have been a number of fatalities and serious injuries on the site, which is now fenced off.

There are a number of viewpoints at Hunters Hill; all affording magnificent views over the Lancashire Plain and beyond, so do take your camera along!

There are certain groups of plants which make a different impact in a garden. For example one group of plants are termed “back bone” planting - generally these are shrubs which provide structure all year round and perhaps a splash of colour during a particular season. Lilacs are a good example. Another group of plants are the star performers. These bloom for a short time only but are so spectacular that we spend all year looking forward to them. They are very good for the soul and provide that wow factor which every garden should have. The large oriental Poppies spring to mind here – Papaver orientale ’Mrs Perry’ is a gorgeous one. Then there are plants which provide terrifi c value all year round, “good doers” - quietly giving the garden more than one season of interest, for example:

Does your planting scheme have the wow factor?

Bergenia ‘Bressingham Ruby’This plant has evergreen leaves which turn ruby red in autumn and winter, followed by pink fl owers in spring - it thrives in shade.Rudbeckia x fulgida ‘Goldsturm’A perennial with yellow daisy like fl owers which perform from July right through to October and retain their structure in winter. The butterfl ies and bees love this plant and it is guaranteed to brighten up even the dullest border on the dullest of days and it even does well in clay soil.Relating plants to people, I like to think of Hubby as good doer and a star performer. He provides me with good value all year round and he makes me smile even on the dullest of days. But does he have the wow factor? What do you think!
