Get a life! a personal one, that is. It’s that time of the year for all of us to get re-newed, refreshed, or re-whatever’d. In the land of resolutions, all too often I see friends and loved ones taking on monumental tasks that will no doubt require pain and com-mitment. While the end result is usually in the best interest of our well-being, it usually leaves little room for enjoyment. Coming out of what is supposed to be one of the happi-est months of the year, I feel downright ex-

hausted. I don’t know about you but running around shopping, crafting, planning, cooking, and running a business leaves little time for good old-fashioned R&R.

Vacations tend to be an outlet we all use to recharge the ol’ battery. But I say, why wait for a one week stretch when I could be recharging in some form year round. We shouldn’t. On my list of resolutions this year I’m going to make a concerted effort to take some time for me in 2012. You always hear the phrase don’t bring your home-life to work. Well I say don’t bring your work-life home! This year I vow to emphasize what’s most important to me, learn to say “NO” and mean it, leave work at work, ask for help a little more, and overall just manage my time better. Who’s with me? It’s funny because the things that seem to drain time from my personal life are all things I re-ally love doing. For starters, I love my job. I love the fact that my kids are involved in so much and I can help. I also generally love being involved in the lives of others. But there needs to be a line. I’m sure even Superwoman sleeps now and then or catches a movie.

We’ve got a great article from one of our Locals this month discussing the perennial resolution of personal fitness. If that’s your charge this year then be sure to read it. For any other goals you’re chasing, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Start by asking our friends in the pages that follow. Whether it’s a service or savings you’re after, Local Life has you covered. So, march on trooper. Make those resolutions. Don’t forget to write them down. May you all have the courage and commitment to see it through and carve a little extra time out for YOU! See ya on the streets… .

I am. I own it. Now, by vain I do not mean that I have an ego as some people may misinterpret that word, I just mean that I care what I look like and how I present myself to the world. I’m thankful for what God gave me, but I also want to do my part to make the most of it each day. As a Mom, Wife, and a Young Professional my health and my looks do matter to me. I’ve seen it open doors for people, myself included. Now, please don’t misunderstand, I’m not saying I’m pretty or that you have to be pretty to open doors for yourself. I’m saying that when I’m working out, eating right, and putting a little effort into how I look when I walk out the door in the morning, things just seem easier, better, to go my way a little more often. I’m more pro-ductive, I have more energy, I’m more confi-dent. Paying attention to my health, fitness, and beauty pays off for me. When I am paying at-

tention to these things, I am the best version of ME I can be.

In doing research for this article I came across an article about obesity in America. The sta-tistics were startling and frankly very scary. It said in the article that 60% of Americans are overweight. While I find that to be very inter-esting, I didn’t have to look far to see why we have troubling statistics like that. At the bottom of the online article I was reading was an ad for pizza. On it was a big slice of gooey, cheesy pizza and some text regarding the latest deal at the pizza joint. Really? You’re gonna put an ad for pizza at the bottom of an article about 60% of America being obese. No wonder we are fat. We are bombarded constantly by the media to get more, eat more, and BE more.

We don’t have a chance unless we take our fit-ness and health into our own hands. We have to have a plan on how we are going to stay well be-cause we are bombarded on a minute to minute basis by drool-worthy pictures, commercials, and quick fixes offering immediate gratification

that is just plain bad for us. We are a society of brats. I want it and

I want it now! Ever hear that? Well that is what we all sound like if we just let the media and so-ciety govern how we act

and how we take care of ourselves.

What really matters

I’m Vain. I’m not going to lie about it.

Page 8: Local Life Magazine, January 2012

to me is being able to keep up with my kids on a daily basis. I want to be able to keep my anxi-ety level down so that I can be productive in my daily life. I need help managing my stress so that I can enjoy my evenings with my family without biting everyone’s heads off and chew-ing them up. I want to sleep well so that I can start my day off with a bang and get the most done in that precious time. I want to feel trim and fit and pretty when I stand on my Hus-

band’s arm at his company Holiday Christmas party. I want to be cute AND have a career! I want to be WONDER WOMAN!

Don’t we all? In all seriousness though, taking care of your fitness and health is paramount to anything else in our lives. The benefits far outweigh the cost. I’m sorry, but if we can all spend hours at a time on Facebook , Pinterest, TIVO and all the other “time-sucks” that we have available now, then surely we can find some time to run or walk around the block a few times. Like I said, I’m as guilty as anyone else of wanting something for nothing, but it’s just not how it works. If you work hard and get moving, pay attention to what you put in your

body, and take care of your skin, hair, and teeth then just by using these things, you lessen your chances of getting things like heart disease and skin cancer.

My husband worked in the Health Club Indus-try for several years when we were first married and every year I knew that between January 1 and February 15th he would be super busy be-cause the gyms would be packed. Every year, predictably, after February 15th, things would calm down and life would go back to normal. So, that tells me that we have about a 45 day attention span when it comes to resolving to do something. It is sad, because in my experience it’s usually about the three month mark that you really start to see the results of the hard work you are putting into your fitness. So, keep at it. You will see changes, just not on your timetable necessarily. Stay with it because just about the time in March where we have our first day of wanting to wear shorts here in Texas, you will wish you had stuck it out on the treadmill for the next 45 days.

So, this new year when making your resolution, don’t set yourself up to fail. I am not much of a resolution person because I try to wake up ev-ery day thinking of ways to better myself, but I do make one promise to myself each and ev-ery year that encompasses most of what I care about. Every year I resolve to TAKE IT UP A NOTCH! To me this just means, give my life my all. My kids, my family, my church, my fit-ness, my health, my friends, my community, my home, my hobbies, my passions, my work… take it up a notch so that I can be the best ver-sion of me that I can be. It’s as simple as that!

The truth is, it is important to me to live a full life with my family. It’s important to me to be around to see my Grandbabies get married. It’s important to me to be able to pursue things in life without being slowed down by my health. I want to be in shape, I want to feel good, and darn it, I kind of want to look cute while I’m doing it! : )

We have about a 45 day attention span when it comes to resolving to do something.... It’s usually about the three month mark that you really start to see the results of the hard work you are putting into your fitness.
