I t has been fou nd tha t ma ny people have func t iona l knowledge system sperta in ing to the ir resources a nd env ironme nt , w hich are based on experience a nd ex perimenta t ion , and which are som et imesbased on un ique ep is temologies . Ef forts have been made to inc lude such know ledge in part ic ipa tory research and pro jec ts .This pap er discusses socio-political, insti tu tiona l, an d ethical issue s that need to be considered in o rder to und ers tan d theactual l im i ta t ions and contr ibu t ions o f such knowledge system s. I t rev iews the na ture o f loca l knowledge a nd suggests theneed to recognize i t s u n ique va lues ye t avo id romant ic ized v iews o f i t s po ten t ia l . L ocal knowledge and a l ternat ive bo t tom-upprojec ts cont inue to be ma rginal ized because o f the dom inance o f convent ional top-dawn R&D approaches, pressures o fagrochemical f i rm s, sc ien t if ic pro fess ional ism, and for o ther po li tical -economic reasons.
